The Fujitsu Lifebook Touchscreen laptop my friend just got...this is everything the epod should be when it's all souped up...6gb hd....active matrix...stylus touch screen...usb...type3 pcmcia...built in ethernet and modem...celeron 400mhz...fully functioning laptop for win98 or win2k...same dimensions as epod...nice and silver color...

Looks like they raised the price...friend scored one for under $1200 shipped....

WRONG. The ePods is a $200 to $300 web browsing tablet. That was its original intended use, and the hack web site (www.geocities.com/epodsfiles) allowed us to use our own ISP rather than pay a monthly king's ransom. It's interesting that so many others have found other neat uses for the ePods, but that's just icing on the cake.

To say that this inexpensive unit SHOULD HAVE BEEN A $1200 TABLET is insane. My Honda Accord SHOULD HAVE BEEN A $68000 JAGUAR. That's what the Accord should have been, no doubt.

The EPOD is a small light networking $200 appliance whereas any available notebook today (with same screen size as EPOD) is bulkier and more expensive. I still use my laptop wirelessly as it serves a function....

No knock on Epods, for the price it rocks. But wireless web pen computers will be showing up very soon that absolutely blow it away. Sony showed their Web Pen Tablet Computer at their line show in SF last week and I could not f**kin believe it. How bout Full motion video from any home AV source, as well as wireless web access from a windows ME pen computer. Just slightly wider than Epods to allow for 2 stereo speakers, it otherwise seemed a similar size and weight. Comes with a Charging/docking base unit about the size of a business phone that doubles as a stand and communicates with the tablet throught 2.4 ghZ radio waves. The base has AV inputs, as well as a 56k modem/phone jack (but no ethernet)though the final configuration might change. The internet browsing seemed real snappy, well like any home computer on a 56k modem line,it had an Epods like screen keyboar, and the ability to immediately switch to a TV source. The picture was bright and sharp and the video was fine. Unfortunately I was running late and got no more details except that it is still undergoing modification for a hopeful release before christmas for less than $1500. That's a lot more $ than Epods, but my guess is they will sell a ton of them if they can connect to broadband with it.

First of all...I was not intending that to be competition to the E-Pod...I was just pointing out that if you were gonna get the epod and add a bunch of storage/networking/software to it, then you might be looking for something similar but more functionality...of course I realize the price difference...

Second...the epod as a $200 does not make any money for them...they probably lose the money in hardware and try to make it up in ISP costs...and hence they are out of business leaving alot of epods for sale for $200. In actually, if someone were to build a similar device today (ie: 3com, sony, etc), the actualy hardware cost with no contract where the manufacturer actually makes money would be more along the lines of $500 or more. And instead of spending that kind of money, the laptop would be able to do all that today wirelessly with plenty of power and storage and connectivity options.

They never sold the epod as a generic machine people can play with for $200...it was sold as a device someone could use their monthly service with...
