Why is ActiveSync necessary for installing software? Why not just use CF?

Why do I need to use ActiveSync for installing software on my Epod? I don't get it? I would much rather just copy the files to my compact flash and then onto the Epod. I don't get what is going on with ActiveSync. Can someone explain?

Some programs can be installed by running the installer on the PC and taking the resultant .cab files, popping them on the epods, and running them. It's really just easier to get a serial cable and use it though. I suppose your idea would be better for large file transfers (mp3s, etc) that would take forever over the serial connection.

JYM,
Just did the easy hack l.02 last week with nothing but cf. I have added all other basic stuff, except handwriting recognition, via cf.
