Today I performed an ePods32 upgrade on a machine with a rev 1.2 motherboard. This machine did not have the Samsung K4S641632x-TC1L memory that I have seen on the majority of rev 1.2 motherboards. Instead, it had Samsung K4S641632x-TC70 memory which is more common on rev 1.1 motherboards. The machine did not work properly with the Mosel Vitelic V54C365164VCT8PC (i-Opener) memory. I installed the faster Micron MT48LC4M16A2-7E memory on the board and it works perfectly.

Hopefully, this motherboard/memory combination is very rare. You may want to check this if you had an unsuccessful memory upgrade.

If you purchased a rev 1.2 kit from me and have this motherboard/memory combination, please contact me. I will exchange your 1.2 kit for a 1.1 kit.

I forgot to summarize what this means. If you are planning a memory upgrade, use the last four digits of the existing memory to determine the compatible memory. This method should be more reliable than using the motherboard revision.

If the factory installed Samsung chips end in TC70 then you need the Micron MT48LC4M16A2-7E (or equivalent) memory.

If the Samsung memory ends with TC1L, then you can use the Mosel Vitelic V54C365164VCT8PC (i-Opener) memory. The Micron memory will also work in these machines. However, it is generally more expensive and will not make the machine any better than with the MV memory. Additionally, the same Micron memory in -75 and -8E speed ratings (and maybe slower) will likely work.

A friend and I have 3 ePods between us, I have a v1.2 and he has a v1.1 and a v1.2. We purchased a couple of Micron memory DIMMS, and have taken the parts off of them to do upgrades. We did the memory upgrade to his v1.1 first, however it failed to see the additional memory. I've since done my v1.2 and everything works great.

I’ve yet to double check the memory on his v1.1 but will do so in the next day or so. I did notice that the DOC/Flash card on the v1.1 was different then the one on the v1.2, and the ones that I’ve seen pictured. The v1.1 card has 4 flash chips, but does not have a DOC chip on it. The card from my v1.2 has a DOC chip and a flash chip. I’m guessing that this means that his v1.1 must be an early v1.1 motherboard and there may be something about the firmware or parts used on the early v1.1’s that would account for some of the failed upgrades that we’ve seen. One thing I have yet to try is swapping the DOC cards from the v1.1 and the v1.2 to see if this changes anything.

Has anyone else noticed anything that might help getting this early v1.1 board to see all the memory?

swan: There are two revisions of the daughterboard, rev 1.0 and rev 1.1. The rev 1.0 board has two chips, a M-systems DOC and a masked ROM chip. The rev 1.1 daughterboard has 5 chips, 4 - Intel flash ROM chips and a M-systems DOC. I've only seen one rev 1.0 daughterboard in all the ePods that I've worked on. It was on a rev 1.2 motherboard.

The daughterboards are interchangeable. The memory and DOC disable upgrades work with both revisions of the motherboards AND daughterboards.

I've had a few machines where the memory was not recognized right away. The problem was likely a cold solder joint. All of the joints looked good to the naked eye, but reflowing all of the joints solved the problem. HTH.
