EPod as a House Controller

New MessageEPod as a House Controller (modified 0 times) sheggsl
Hi

I have of recent discovered this forum and have subsequently become interested in the different uses an E-pod. I have an HTPC which I am hoping to configure as the nerve center of an Home automation system and I would like to use the epod to

Control my Home Theatre via Infra red. Switch on Projector, Lower Screen and dim lights etc
Send x10 commands to my HTPC
share an ADSL connection with my HTPC and use the epod to surf the Net
View video on the E-pod via the HTPC using a VNC connection.
Use the epod to control appliances all over the house

My main question is that are there any epods owners outthere that are currently using their e-pod for the above tasks. My second question is where can I get an epod in the UK? and thirdly are there any other Internet appliances I can use if the epod does not have the functionality for me to carry out the above mentioned tasks.

Does anyone ever use the search engines anymore to find out anything? I guess this is what happens when all the Ebay horders finally sell off their stock.

<Rant off>

Sheggsl: Use the search function of this board with "x10" or "home automation" and you will find numerous discussions about this topic.

I agree.

That said :

1. No on the infrared.
2. Yes on the X10.
3. Yes.
4. No. Video is too slow on the epods.
5. Yes, if you use X10.

Main question : Yes, search this board for keywords like "home automation" etc.
Source in UK : Don't know, but someone bought a bunch of them for sale in the UK. Try UK home automation fora. Or Ebay.
Alternative appliance : Probably the i-Opener, given it's a PC. The display won't be the best for watching video.

thanks for very much for your replies,

contary to my posting this topic, I had conducted a search, and found some useful prior posts, however what I couldn't find anthing on, was where to source an epod from in the UK.Perhaps someone in the UK might be able to provide me with some info on where they obtained the unit from. My main requirements for an E-pod is to use it as

1. A Remote control

2 A PDA type device

3. Internet Browser

Has there being any progress on using the epod as a remote? i.e the limatations of its IRDA.

1. No, except using X10. Can't get access to the IR port ("another program has it locked").
2. Yes, using PMail (included in the 2.04 hack) and Act! No Outlook yet, annoyingly.
3. Yes, but it's slow (~20sec to render a page). Run Terminal Services for a better experience - but remember it's still 640x480.

We haven't got to the limitations of the IR range - we can't even get apps to talk to the IR port yet.

I repeat, couldn't you buy your epods from Ebay? Many vendors will ship overseas (I know, I'm in Australia).

I currently use my Epods in a similar manner. You do not want to use VNC as it is too slow (ie use TS). I use a WEB based home contol application called Homeseer. It has plug ins for just about any devices that you might want to use. Link to HS is www.keware.com.

Somewhere on here, a while back, someone was talking about using a IR receiver or transmitter or resender, or something like that. . .to retransmit the weak IR signal of the epod and send it to who knows where. I don't know if it ever worked or not.

I hate the bashing on people for not searching; however, therefore, please do note,. . .
there are a LOT of epod threads on this board, and it will take a while to find what you really need. Almost everything has already been answered (unfortunately).
