MP3's on Epods?

New MessageMP3's on Epods? (modified 0 times) Smakz
Does http://www.microsoft.com/windows/windowsmedia/en/download/handheld.asp work on the epods for playing mp3's?

I think I remember someone saying no.

But they also said that Hum MP3 Player does work.

I have been having problems using Hum MP3 as well as the xaudio player. It seems to freeze up the ePods unit after a couple of seconds. Is anyone else having problems with it?

Are you playing the Mp3 local or off your network? Network settings require a lot more buffer alocation and then it cuts off... ??? May or may not be your solution...

Also with Humm has anyone got a graphoc skin to work from the storage card? I can only get them to work when installed in ram?

Sardinour,

This HumMP3 thing, is there anyway for you to try it over a network to see if it works ok? Right now I have a dedicated p166 playing mp3s on my home stereo that I'd like to free up. The ePod would be absolutely perfect for this...touch screen and everything. Thanks for any help you can give.

I only have a wireless PCMCIA nic at my disposal. It is a 1.5m and it will not supoort MP3 play on the Epod. I can buffer a good portion but in the end it will chop. As to a wired lan, I would think it should, but can not test it (unless someone going to donate a card) hehe :) Im sure someone out there with a wired lan can lend some help on that one.

anyone...??

Ahh...ok, ya, it will be on my 10mbps lan...as for the ePods it only supports 10mbps lan cards, right? I have a Linksys EC2T (10 mbps PCMCIA card) that says it's fully ne2000 compatible. Since I haven't received my ePod yet, I'm desperately hoping it will work in it. Anyone had luck with this card?

Before you spend any significant amount of time trying to get MP3's to play across a network, you may want to test play some MP3's locally. I loaded a few MP3's on a CF card and played them on the ePods. The ePods decoded the MP3's fine, but the sound quality was not good. I would be surprised if the sound hardware is capable of producing "acceptable quality" sound.

Hmm...damn. I thought when it came to sound...it was basically at least an acceptable quality no matter how cheap of card or device u put in something. I'll try it when I get it....just ordered my ePod last night....dunno how long fingerhut will take to get it to me.

Glitch,

Is that with the internal speaker or headphones? I've found that using headphones on my iPaq makes a HUGE difference in quality and power savings.

I have been trying to play them across the lan. I love the ePods with the wireless lan! :) I have not had a chance to try the buffer yet though. I will have to try it when I get home tonight. I am using a 11mbps card so it should be able to transfer the mp3 fast enough. I probably need more memory or something though.

Glitch:
You could be getting back sound quality because the ePods only has one small speaker. It will sound tinny and mono almost always sounds bad anyway. If you use headphones in the headphone jack you can get stereo sound though. Too bad I can't get my ePods to play MP3s good enough to tell if the sounds quality is acceptable! :(

Hey Serisman:

What 11Mbps Lan card are you using? How much was it?

The sound is not that bad really, it's hardware is limited to medium quality. The trouble is the back ground hiss.. worse than my Iopener... But its too big to be a portable player (even more so tied to a wired lan) and it's little speaker leaves a lot of room for sound improvement, but in general I am impressed with the sound it puts out just sitting on the desk next to me. With headphones you can hear the quality loss, but no worse than a highly compressed Mp3 on my Lyra (mp3 player). I have a 64meg CF flash dedicated to my epod that I allways keep a few Mp3's when I need 'em :)

I got the Lucent Orinoco (wavelan) RG-1000 Residential Gateway setup. It came with the gateway device which is basically a wireless hub with a modem a network port. I have that dialing up my isp and connecting to my wired network also. The whole kit with one pcmcia card was about $340. I think you can get the cards for around $150 a piece. I know they were listed on eBay also.

You can download the latest software and firmware at http://www.wavelan.com

Alright, guess it'll just have to be a "cross-your-fingers-and-hope" situation. Would be really nice if this worked. I have a clunk computer and monitor in my home stereo setup...would be great to replace that with this ePod.

just for the record though, the epod is handy and a nice toy, but even a clunk of a computer will run circles around the epod. Remember it's CE and a slow processor. A 486 running win95 will give you better performance... but then again most don't fit in your hands and let you run mapping software while sitting in Denny's :) (Microsoft streets is the best app hands down for the epod after you make your own custom maps)

I usualy am way to impatient to wait for it to load web pages (through dialup or wirelessly through a T1) It usualy winds up in the hands of my eight year old playing games or drawing (doodler) when she's board.

I guess I will see what all comes of the 'pod after I get done hacking the hell out of it :)

Where would I find the ORiNOCO Gateway at the cheapest price? Anyone?

The hardware output is limited to 22Khz sampling. However, if I ever get Netbsd to load correctly, it can support USB audio output. This machine is also a fairly quick pc at 130Mhz 64bit. It really takes a hit running CE and its apparent lack of a math co pro.

Also for those who remember, the noise levels through the headphones are about the same as the original soundblaster. (definitely not audiophile quality)

Zonyl,

You seem to have a good idea what's goin' on with this thing. Keep me posted on the whole audio thing as well as anything else. As for sound quality...22kHz does kinda suck, but I guess I can't really say that till I hear it, so I'll have to wait a week or two I guess.

Sinner & serisman: I used both headphones & my regular computer speakers. My ePods has a very pronounced hiss along with the music and a very limited dynamic range. Other machines peoples may sound better than mine or they may not be as picky. I may do an experiment to see if there is a variance among the machines.

Fujimax: Not all sound chips are created equal. I would assume that the ePods has a pretty minimal system since it only needs to drive one small speaker and make "Windows noises". The ePods engineers had no real need to specify anything more than this since sound was not a significant part of their product offering. The ePods is will play MP3's, but based on my experience, I doubt that most people would want to hook it up to their home stereo.

ot utopiasoft to run on the pods, sure not as good as my sony DB930 with toslink from CD/DVD on energy speakers but then again that was 2000. it not bad sound i just hate that hum forces a 640x480 display. it limits the choice of skins. it he 640x480 part of the epods shell or is it hum. i want the palmpc size 320 by 240 display but even if i load 320x240 skins it just messes them up

anybody try mpeg tv???

Since the Humm MP3 Player only plays 22K, do anyone know if there is a software that can turn 44K MP3 files to 22K MP3 files. I am assumming that this will reduce the MP3 file size at least by half.

Please provide a link of the MP3 converter.

Thanks in advanced,

MASJM

I use Siren Jukebox from Sonic Foundry to convert my CD collection (in 160bit WMA) to 128bit MP3 when I load songs onto my (Diamond Rio 500) MP3 player. I run it on my Win98 box.

Similarly, it will do bitrate conversion of MP3s - but make sure there is enough information in the original signal to do a proper conversion!

As I mentioned in another thread, 22Khz sampling gives you only an 11Khz audible range - you really need at least 20 for good sound (this is why at least 44Khz is the standard for audio hardware).

Zonyl, let us know how things go with NetBSD...

To answer the ORIGINAL question for this thread:

I downloaded EVERY version of Windows Media Player for Handheld PC, and when trying to install each gives an error message stating "Your device is not compatible..."

Best bet - stick with XAudio for MP3 and PocketTV for video files.
