Win2k Terminal Server and MP3 Apps

New MessageWin2k Terminal Server and MP3 Apps (modified 0 times) Chad
Greetings,

I've gotten Win2k terminal server and CE terminal client up and running tonight. Works great for explorer and ordinary apps. Now for my question/issue: My stereo system is connected to the SPDIF output of a SB Live video card. I was hoping I could serve up a MP3 app, run it on the client and have it actually running on the server machine and thus control my playlists from the epod. However, what happens is that I get the application to show up on the epod but the sound does not get generated out of the server. Has anyone figured out a way to do this. I am probably misunderstanding the way TS works. I could run pocket VNC and get the actual results I'm looking for, but TS is so much faster and slicker.

Thanks,

Chad Clement

You will need win2k server, not professional. When loading win2k svr, it will ask you to set up terminal services. I set it up as an application server and then set up the client parameters. The setup pretty much guides you thru it, Of course you need to download and install term server client on your epod.

thanks. got it working with winxp and it's a whole different experience now ! browsing is so fast !
same thing for mp3s, they don't launch on the desktop cause it logs out when you log in from the epods.

Are you saying that wndowsXP running with terminal server will allow audio output from the PC's soundcard? The option is disabled in W2KAS. In another thread, a guy from Microsoft said that he would lobby the WinXP dev team to get this to work.

I haven't gotton my TS server running yet. But I think its a routeing problem so far. Do you have to put TS in APP mode or can you use remote mode? Remote to me would seem that you could play local MPTs off the server and out the sound card.

Is there a specail setting you have to tell TS to get it to work with non-2000 clients such as the epods?

I've been using Terminal Services for a day now, but the option to remove the audio mapping is grayed- that means that the audio is sent to the ePods (although it can't do anything with it).

The remote control mode I believe is to allow PCAnywhere type functions so it may be possible to start a TS client on the server, and control it from a client on the ePods.

You only need the TS client for WinCE (there are links in other messages) install it and off it goes- really as simple as that. I installed the server with the sessions never stopping, even if the ePod disconnects so when you connect again, you can choose the session you were connected to and contibue from the same point from where you left.

Well, I installed a TS client onto the server and set it for 640 x 480 and the audio didn't work from the server either. Interestingly, with the client set to 640 x 480, the display was set up only for 8-bit display.

This possibly means that the TS client foe CE doesn't need to be changed to support 16-bit colour, and the grayed out audio mapping on the TS config affects all TS clients.

Per previous threads, Citrix Metaframe 1.8 with FR 1 installed enables audio to to be streamed to the epod. . .but you have to have the client license.

But, I don't understand why you can't control your servers soundcard with the epod.
Basically, using the epod as a remote control for your 'jukebox' server hooked up to your stereo. This is what I really want to do with an old computer laying around. Several epoders seem to imply that it works with Windows Media Player 7.1, but I can't get it to work.

I may have to go the x10 route as someone did (busdepot?). I don't know what the sound quality would be like, but it's better than the other methods available.

ANY IDEAS???????????????

Streaming audio to the ePods isn't useful for me - all I want to do is to control MediaPlayer wirelessly from the ePods with the audio output from the PC going to an amplifier. You can do this with VNC but it is too slow to be useable.

I could write my own app, but I can't get hold of the CE SDK for 2.11 any more (doesn't seem to be on the MS site). Really all I need is for the grayed out Audio-remapping option to be disabled in TS.

Has anyone written a MP3 C/S app?

There is a plugin for winamp that lets you control playlists and simple play controls via web browser. Its called Snowcrash, at:

www.mp3pirate.com/snowcrash

This lets you run Winamp on the console, and then control it from any browser including one used in other log-in sessions on the same machine. The drawback is you'll need to stay perma-logged in at the console and have winamp running there all the time.

Hey thanks for that link LDePod. Has anyone got this to work? I can see my playlist and watch songs change on the epod if I control winamp from the server, but I can't control it all from the client. I added the epod's ip address to the cfg file and still no control. I can only watch. I don't need to open port 82 in my router's firewall do I? . . .probably a dumb question.

LDePod - Do you have this working? Thanks.

I have it working completely. The partial wildcard stuff didn't seem to work for me, and you cannot assign 'full' priviledges to the total wildcard (e.g. *|1000). Because of these issues, I ended up listing all my system IPs explicitly with 1000 access:

localhost|1000
192.168.0.1|1000
192.168.0.2|1000
192.168.0.3|1000

And so on. Once I did this and restarted Winamp completely, it worked great. Before I did this, I had the same problem you did; the list management and play control buttons were un-tappable, except for the 'view current playlist' button. Hope this helps.

Man oh man did I try everything, and after 24 hours of relentless pursuit I put in the servers IP address instead of localhost. . .and it worked. This is what I wanted, who need Citrix!
Thanks again.

Check out Winamp. It is possible to run a webserver and winamp on your server PC running any OS the Winamp supports. You can then control Winamp through a web page. MP3 will play on server and ePods reads web pages pretty well.

Email me at sinner@optonline.net if you can't track it down. I wrote my own custom version of the plug-in I had found because I didn't like the one available.

This is what the Snowcrash app does as mentioned by LDePod. If you know of another, it would be interesting to have a look at it.

While Snowcrash is excellent there are a couple of issues I have with it:
1. The music selection always starts from the desktop - showing all drives - it would be nicer to fix it to one directory by default.
2. The link between the playlist and the music selection is a bit unweildy. I suspect that this is forced on Snowcrash due to its interface with Winamp, but I'm not sure.

What is good though is the layout and function of Snowcrash - it justifies the cost of the ePod and wireless network alone.

Using windows XP you can have your audio come out of the sound card on the "Server". Connect to an XP desktop with the epod using the Term Serv client. There are settings in XP to have remote desktop audio stream to epod, output on "server" or no audio.

This should solve everyone's problem with getting the audio out of the server instead of to the epod. Only problem is it's remote desktop so you can only have 1 user connected to an xp session at 1 time.

Check out XP Professional Release Canidate 1 ... should work for ya..

I have the ePod connected to a Windows XP RC 2 machine through Terminal services, but I cannot for the life of me get it to play sound on the main computer. I have seen the audio option when I connect from another XP machine, but not when I connect from my ePod. Can you tell me where exactly do I find this setting to allow for my ePod to play music on a terminal service control machine (through a stereo)

Thanks

Seems like I discovered a small work around. If you start the server with the MP3 player running and playing ( in my case MusicMatch), and then start the Terminal Services on the ePod, the sound output will continue to play on the server. Not graceful but it works!!!!

make a small mp3 that is completely silent, have winamp load in the startupgroup by loading that sound first.

maybe a large one @ vbr would be cool too.
