Wavelan/Orinoco Bronze Problem

New MessageWavelan/Orinoco Bronze Problem (modified 0 times) Ethan
I'm trying to get two Orinoco Bronze (2Mbps) PC cards to work between a desktop pc and laptop. The cards seem to install just fine in both machines. I've installed the Orinoco software and when I perform the link test, both computers see each other. I try to access them through the Network Neighborhood but to no avail. I've tried assigning static IP addresses to the cards and pinging them but also have had no luck. Pinging the local card is successful so I don't think it's a hardware issue. I notice that the graph icon that Orinoco installs to the taskbar is greyed out. Is this normal? The LEDs on the cards are lit. One stays solid while the other blinks intermittently, indicating network activity I'd assume.

I think I'm using the right drivers on both the 98 and 2000 machines, as the installations went through without a hitch. Under both machines, the cards are installed as: ORiNOCO PC Card (5 volt).

I have configured the profiles of the cards using the Wireless Network icon under the control panel to set them up in Peer-to-Peer mode. Both cards have the same workgroup.

I've also tried installing a card in a Windows CE device. The graph icon that was installed on the taskbar now shows a yellow bar that cycles through the graph. I click on the icon and it reports that it's connected to the right workgroup, but it's out of range. It reports this regardless of the distance between the two machines.

Thank you for any information you might have. Any help is greatly appreciated.

Had that same problem before with the wavelan. I found that for some reason the Wavelan (and I assume Wavelan Bronze) REQUIRE an Access Point and do not work in peer to peer mode. I seem to remember that I was able to trick it by running in AP mode with a PCI card in my desktop, but the speed was bad, ao I bit the bullet and bought an SMC Barricade with which I'm very pleased !

Do you set both to be in AP mode? I tried setting both in AP mode and it was the first time I got the taskbar icon on the epod to go green but it said it was searching for a network.

yes if i recall properly, both to AP, although you might try the wavelan in Peer to Peer.
Do you have a dhcp server running for internet sharing ?
I'll drop in the wavelan in my epods to see if it works, who knows, there might be a strange incompatibility problem.

yup it works, so check your dhcp server and uncheck wep if you're using it, although I'm not sure bronze has wep

Ethan,
Did you get your Orinoco Bronze cards to talk? I had a similar problem between two Windows 2000 computers at first. I could ping the local card address but not the remote card. I rebooted both machines and everything started to work. Peer to peer mode does work under Windows 2000, make sure you use the latest drivers from the WaveLAN site and upgrade the card's firmware to the newest version.

Yes, I too would suspect the firmware level. I have five devices in my house (2 win2k servers, 1 95osr2.5, 1 98, 1 epod) all running wavelan silver cards in peer-to-peer mode. They can cope with both dhcp from one of the servers and fixed IP just fine.

The epod will always show out-of-range and searching even though it is running just fine. This is a bug in the CE driver. Use VxUtils to get a ping application on the pod for testing purposes.

The LEDs will be one solid (power) and one blinking (operating). The blinking is *not* tied to network traffic.

Good luck!

yellow1,
I can not say if it works under 98 or CE but trust me, p2p works under 2000.
Therefore the card does support p2p.

I am another Wavelan user (bronze turbo and silver) that has them working PERFECTLY in peer-2-peer mode. It did take me a while of fooling around with the settings and firmware, however they ABSOLUTELY DO NOT require an access point. I work for MS and have access to pretty much any/all brands of wireless hardware and have confirmed the peer-2-peer mode too many times to count. Just keep trying and you will stumble on the correct firmware/setting combination that will work for you.

ok well trust me the Wavelan 2mbps, just white, CANNOT get an IP from a DHCP server running in p2p mode with a software router like WinGate. It's just impossible. Silver works fine in that configuration

Hi.
I got the same problem with a wavelan bronze. The problem doesn't comes from the pcmcia firmware. The problem is the dhcp server. I have a wifi router at home, and the bronze card can connect to it perfectly. There is an other wifi modem/router at the first floor, and I can't get an IP from that dhcp server.
I found a link related to apple and the newton (?) : http://www.kallisys.com/newton/rustines/fr, and looks at the NIE patch.
Look at this poste too : http://newted.dyndns.org/ubb/Forum3/HTML/000216.html .
THe good news with that is that now, I know where the problem comes from, but I can't get it solved :((

See you
