IBM Microdrive Performance on EPODS

Hi all! I've tried to read as much as I could today to catch up. I just ordered my epods and before I spend even more on a IBM microdrive of some size for it, I'd like to know how others would rate the drive's performance on the epod.

Specifically I'd like to know how fast is the epods able to access the drive and what the power performance is like when running the drive. Should I expect my batt life to drop drastically or will it be reasonable.

Thanks everyone!

Search the threads, I tried this with my MicroDrive. To maximise stress, I played MPEG video on a MicroDrive in the PCMCIA adapter. Battery lasted 3 hours 50 mins, down from the usual 6 (to even 8) hours. However, I was constantly accessing the drive and MPEG is pretty intensive. Access time is really not important, the ePods itself is the bottleneck.

In short, yes, it eats power. For me that's OK, the low cost (compared to flash) for the large space was worth it.

Great thanks. You answered my question. I was just concerned that the microdrive might really eat up power. :) Is there a performance trade off over using the microdrive in the PCMCIA slot or the CF slot?

I doubt it...PCMCIA vs. CF slot will probably make very little difference. It does not seem slower (to me) either way.

Great, thanks for the info. The epods + the microdrive + wireless (wow this is getting expensive, but fun) I think I'll be able to make a usefull little toy...

If only epods had thought of marketing the deivce as a more open system they might have made it. Honeywell is making a webpad, but I think it is "locked" into AOL as well.

Check the CF-01 board for info on some CHEAP 802.11b cards, $49.95. Gotten them working in everything except ePods, but I know I'm close...if I get it working (or anyone does) that may be a good option for you.
