Are Fingerhut unit identical to Niemann Marcus units from Dec/Jan

I bought two units from Fingerhut and one from Niemann Marcus in December. At least one of the Fingerhut units wasn't delivered until January. I haven't opened any of them yet. My question is this. Should all three units be identical, same version, and so forth. The version number seems to make a lot of diffrence with an I-opener, but I haven't seen too much discussion of version number in e-Pods threads. I would like to open at least one of the boxes and make it into a wireless remote for a home automation system, maybe X-10 based.

Thanks for any info you can provide regarding version numbers. If anyone has experience or designs for running home automation software from an e-Pods, I would be grateful for an exhange on that also.

The short answer...

No, there are no significant differences

The long answer...

There are two possible things that can differ between ePods. The first is the daughterboard. There are two versions. The first has four Intel flash chips on it. The second has a single masked ROM chip. The difference is only important if someone comes up with something new to flash onto the Intel chips. I doubt that this will happen.

The second possible difference is the RAM memory speed. Earlier versions had faster memory chips than later versions. The memory of both versions is clocked at the same speed. There is no perforce advantage to either version. The distinction is only important if you want to upgrade the amount of RAM from 16MB to 32MB. (click here for details)

AFAIK, the software loaded onto the machines is identical. The various software hacks can be applied to all versions of the machines equally well.

Oops, that should be "There is no performance advantage to either version".

I shouldn't try to type before my second cup of coffee <g>.
