epods1XP hack no workie?

I've installed PTCheezer's XP hack on my epods unit. I get a different looking deskop with a background that says something like "Freedom is beautiful.", bUT, the touchscreen is dead! If I do a hard-reset, I get the 2.04 hack I had installed previously, and all seems well.

What have I dorked up here?

Steps:

1. Copied the \Program Files and \Win_CEFiles dirs to a CF storage card.
2. Copied the \Win_CEFiles dir to the epods root
3. soft reset
4. load the registry settings
5. soft reset

No touchscreen. Pressing the keyboard button brings up the keyboard, but you can't type on it. Pressing the IE button gets the thing stuck in a loop, forever loading IE...

thanks for any and all help!

jwixted: Is the touchcsreen dead or does it need to be recalibrated? Do you get any audio feedback when you touch the screen?

For most of the hacks you need to recalibrate the touchscreen after applying the hack. The TS calibration information is stored in the registry. When you import the hack's registry file you are also loading the TC cals of whoever put together the hack. Sometimes these are close to what you need, other times they are far off. I've seen machines where you need to "click" about a quarter of an inch away from what you want to select. Recalibration fixes this problem.

Having the wrong screen sounds like the new registry didn't load properly. It is a good idea to delete all of the old registry keys before importing the new registry file.

Well, it #1 you said you copied both \Program Files and \Win_CeFiles to your CF card when you only have to copy \Program Files to the CF card. \Win_CeFiles only goes to your epod. My instructions say the following:
- Copy the Win_CeFiles folder to your ePod and overwrite files when prompted
- Copy the Program Files folder to your Storage Card
Next, I see that you have 2 soft resets listed instead of a hard reset after the above folders were copied... If you only did soft resets, then the new files you copied over would not have been copied to the right places (\Win_CeFiles ifc copies to the \Windows folder). Again, the instructions say:
- Hard reset ePods and go to Start > Run
After you hard reset you will be prompted for recalibration like Glitch mentioned. Also, your should re-import the registry just to make sure. The file name is \Storage Card\Program Files\ePods1XP.txt

To sum up:
- Copy the Win_CeFiles folder to your ePod and overwrite files when prompted
- Copy the Program Files folder to your Storage Card
- Hard reset ePods and go to Start > Run
- Browse to Storage Card > Program Files > Utilities > Tascal Reg Edit.exe
- Import \Storage Card\Program Files\ePods1XP.txt file
- Soft-Reset ePods

This is for the Application version of ePods1XP. The NoApps version doesn't use a CF card or have a \Program Files folder. Please let me know if there's something wrong with my instructions or the ePods1XP hack. I've had other people mention a few issues with getting the hack installed and I can't help but to think that it's because my instructions aren't clear enough or something.

glitch: No audio feedback. I cannot get the recallibration screen to show up. I have a desktop, and can click the buttons at the top, but tapping anything on the screen yields nothing.

PTCheezer: Copying BOTH directories to the CF card made the task of copying to the epods much faster - since I tried it five or six times before posting.

From the readme, what I did:

- Copy the Win_CeFiles folder (from my CF storage card) to your ePod and overwrite files when prompted
- Copy the Program Files folder to your Storage Card
- Hard reset ePods and go to Start > Run
- Browse to Storage Card > Program Files > Utilities > Tascal Reg Edit.exe
- Import \Storage Card\Program Files\ePods1XP.txt file
- Soft-Reset ePods

These ARE the steps I used (shouldn't post before I finish that second cup of coffee!)

Thanks for your help!

Additional info: I DO get audio when pressing the buttons at the top, but no audio when tapping the display...

Okay, my bad! I've got it working - wasn't copying the \Win_CEFiles dir to the \epods system dir. Once I did that (gleaned from another post, over in Yahoo!), I was golden!

Now, off to get my Linksys WPC11 NIC to work....
