Hi i lent my epods to a frend and just got it back with a compleatly flat battery, it boots into 2.12, but the apps are gone, it will also not active sync.

What should I do, is it time to get my soldering iron out ?

Thanks

John

What hacks have been done to the machine?

If you have done any of the common shell hacks, just re-import the registry and soft reset. Any software that you installed after the hack will need to be re-installed.

FYI, (almost) all of the ePods are running the WinCE 2.12 operating system. This includes the stock ePods. What is different on the machines is the "shell" or user interface. This can vary greatly depending on how the user has modified the machine. Hard reset recovery procedures (including dead battery) also vary depending on which shell is installed.

Think it was 2.02 full, but the frend has had my epod for 6 months so my memory is a bit clouded

Links to most programmes are broken, my WiFi card is not recognised, fstore does works, My pc now has active syc 3.6 and does not want to work with the epod. (AS does not recognise the device connected to com 1) Link to tascal also broken.

The links to most programs are dead because you need to get that registry file re-imported and soft reset as Glitch mentioned. The link to Tascal Reg Edit is probably proken as well, so you need to browse to \Win_CeFiles\Program Files\Utilities\Tascal Reg Edit.exe to be able to re-import the registry file located at \Win_CeFiles\v204.reg probably. You'll still have to reinstall any apps you may have installed.

You could try my hack http://ptcheezer.tripod.com that has many apps installed that will not need to be reinstalled after a dead battery (just import the registry file again).

Good Luck!

I have done the re-import and get the blue screen but the start menu is dead and if I open anything on the desktop it opens and then it hangs.

Do uou think its time to get the soldering iron out ?

What I can do is after a hard reset I can use the net command to attach with a network card to a shaired drive on my network, its that a way to get my system back. am I correct in thinking that if I just replace the win_cefiles directory with one of the hacks directories and do a hard reset the system will get re-built ?

I dont understand what is actualy happening when a hard reset occurs

jtankard: You don't need a soldering iron if you can get the machine booted to a point where you can manipulate the files on the DiskOnChip. This will be the "Win_CeFiles" folder on the 2.0x hacks and "ePods System" folder on the stock ePods. It sounds like your machine is functional enough to be recovered without opening the case and poking at it with a hot pointy thing. Delete everything in the "Win_CeFiles" folder and re-copy the hack files and file structure onto the DOC.

I've written an explanation on what goes on during a soft/hard reset. I'll try to dig it up later today and post it.

My 2 cents from my ePods1XP hack readme.txt:

- An ePod has a folder named "ePods System" by default
- If you've installed the 2.04 hack, this folder gets renamed to "Win_CeFiles"
- Inside this folder there is a folder named "ifc"
- When you do a hard reset, the contents of "ifc" get copied to your "Windows" folder

Almost 100% of my hack deals with the files in the ifc folder. I would love to read Glitch's more detailed explaination about soft and hard resets so I can learn more about the process!

thats real interesting my epods has ePods System not Win_CeFiles, perhaps i did not do the 2.04 hack after all. Which leads me to the next question, if i rename the folder and copy your hack then do a hard reset will that apply the hack ? but that raieses another question how does it know druing the reset where the files are to use to build windows ?

Please download ePods1XP and read the instructions. All the info to do the upgrade should be in there.

-Dan

p.s. Don't rename Epods System folder... Just put the files in there.
