Newbie just bought an epod; a few questions
Win CE questions

Hi all;
I just ordered an epod from overstock.com after searching for an inexpensive handheld type device to read ebooks with. I have been surfing around trying to find info about what the WinCE os comes with.... I really only want to be able to read text files, view images, and possibly listen to an occasional audiobook (mp3); webbrowsing would be an added bonus of course, but not totally necessary at first. I do have CF cards to store stuff on.... Questions: Do I need to find, download and install separate CE compatible proggies for text reading, image viewing and mp3 listening, or do these apps come with the Windows CE version I will be getting with my ePod? Also, do I need to contact my ISP to get a WinCE compatible version of their dial-up program? Sorry about the pathetic questions; I am just a retired granny with little to no experience with these things....
PS I found the website (i believe it is Randy's site? correct me if I am wrong....) called "Hack your epod" which I think will be extremely helpful when I get my epod, but I will probably have more questions later, if that is not irritating to the group.... Thanks for your help.... eReader

You are brave to tackle an ePod

Unhacked ePods aren't very useful. Hacking an ePods is very easy if done right. It's easy to screw up as well. You really have to make sure you understand it. Recovery from a major screw up is difficult. Not impossible, but difficult.

Now that I have scared you........... ePods can be very useful and fun.

ePods run on a CE 2.12 core with a custom shell. You won't find many CE2.12 programs but you will find lots of CE 2.11 programs which will work well. CE 3.0 programs and higher will not run unless hex edited. Freecell and Solitaire that run in the BeePod hack actually came from CE 4.2.

>>> Do I need to find, download and install separate CE compatible proggies for text reading, image viewing and mp3 listening, or do these apps come with the Windows CE version I will be getting with my ePod?

Pocket Word is built in but you'll need to download programs to do other things. I use uBook to read ebooks. TCPMP will play mp3's.

>>> Do I need to contact my ISP to get a WinCE compatible version of their dial-up program?
Maybe. I haven't tried dialup on my ePod. You'll need to set up a Connection. From memory, I think it is in Control Panel. It all depends on your ISP. Wireless is a better way to go. Many wireless pcmcia cards will work. I use a wireless CF card. Additionally you'd need a wireless router. 802.11b cards and routers will give you the best chance of success.

http://groups.yahoo.com/group/epods/ is another site with lots of information.

http://members.netjunkies.net/epods/ has info about BeePod

Ask as many questions as you want. There is very little activity on all of the ePods sites now. New interest is great.

Thanks, Marko, for the good info. I am a little "scared" to try hacking, but I think I will try anyway. The "hackyourepod" site seems to have very clear step by step tutorials, so I think it is worthwhile to give it a try. I have done a few things on my home pc, involving pretty simple plug and play operations, like installing additional internal harddrives, cd writers, etc. Nothing major like soldering, and I am really not a techie, but I love gadgets and "tweaking" things so I will probably just have to try some of these hacks, even at the risk of destroying the device. Let's hope it doesn't come to that.... :p

On the epods main disk, there is a folder named IFC. The contents of the IFC folder get copied into ram (\Windows) at startup. What's in the IFC folder is critical. An epod needs certain files to be in \Windows in order to start. That is because of the Registry. An epod reverts to the default Registry after a hard reset. The default Registry dictates that a user interface file named Explorer.exe must be in \Windows. Therefore Explorer.exe's required dll's must be in \Windows. Explorer.exe requires ceshell.dll and asform.dll. So, to get Explorer.exe, ceshell.dll and asform.dll into \Windows, they must also be in the IFC folder. The System Path defined in the default Registry tells the Operating System to only look in the \Windows folder for the files. (other files are in the IFC folder as well, not just the few mentioned above)

Once an ePod is working, the System Path can be expanded to include other folders. (BeePod relies on this) The critical thing to remember is that if you have to Hard Reset an ePod (because of a system lockup etc.) you are back to the default registry.

Two things to remember when you install programs:

1. Check to see what files got installed to \Windows and remember that they will get deleted when you reset. Most program dll's can be moved to the folder where the program's exe file is located or somewhere else in the System Path. If the dll absolutely has to be in \Windows then it also has to be in IFC.

2. Export your current Registry so that it can be imported back after a hard reset.
