HELP:Proxim Symphony Wireless cards not working
Proxim Symphony Wireless cards

New MessageHELP:Proxim Symphony Wireless cards not working (modified 0 times) wireless
I got the Proxim Symphony Wireless card and I CAN'T get it to work...

What I did:
1) Purchased a 4402-05 Symphony Card.
2) Downloaded the driver from
http://www.proxim.com/support/symphony/tfaqs/os_support.shtml
3) Installed the driver via ActiveSync and replaced the existing proxim.dll.
4) Before and after reset, looked at the network panel and it said PROXIM RangeLan2 in the Network Control panel.
5) I inserted the card and the epods asked for the Device driver and I typed in PROXIM RangeLan2.
As a side note, after a hard reset and reload, the network option in the Network panel now says PROXIM Ethernet Driver...
6) Tried to ping the epods but nothing.

I know the other wireless cards I have work since they all talk together fine.

A few questions:
1) How do you bring up the shelf tool?
2) How do you set the security code for the card?
3) What should it say in the Network control panel for driver choices?
4) What is the name of the driver to type in when CE first asks you for the driver name for the wireless card?

Ok,

I reinstalled the driver from scratch and called it proxim.dll (I must have done that before) and got the RangeLAN2 driver description to appear in the control panel.

I setup the IP as 192.168.4.60/255.255.255.0 netmask.

But I have noticed 2 things (other than it not seemingly working.)

1) The screen dimming button no longer works
2) The epods is slower!

are you using the epods shell or the full blown replacement CE shell?

epods shell

I also configured the Symphony Card with my laptop since I could not get to the shelf to configure the card.

My feeling is that (from reading some documents) that point to point does not work on the CE driver. I guess I will _have to_ use the Meastro software... Doh!

Correction... Composer software.

Even with the corrected software name I still can't get it to work. BLAST!

I had the 4402-05 working with the v1 hack. When I switched to v2 - no longer working. I actually had lots of problems getting it t work with v1 and then magically, it worked (much trial and error). Unfortunately I don't know what I did to get it to work.

The point is, when it was working, I was using symphony peer-to-peer mode, MS Internet connection Sharing on Windows ME, and my ePods was configuerd to use DHCP with no other network settings filled in. I was using the Proxim RangeLan2 CE driver (proxim.dll 87k).

I think my problems have to do with ICS not being able to dynamically assign an IP. I'll post more if I figure anything out.

Thanks... I have been frustrated with multiple cards. I have tried the Proxim Symphony 4402-05 with the Proxim Ethernet bridge... no luck... maybe I just need to bang away! If you find anything let me know.
Thanks in advance.

Doh! After just writing that last message it made me think... I guess I can't use the _Cordless Gateway_ configuration... it's NOT supported!! It is not an _Ethernet Bridge_... duuuhhh!
So I wonder if the Composer is supported... eeesh! What a pain in the behind!

I'm beginning to think Wireless and I are the only ones doing wireless (either that or we're the only ones having problems).

If anyone is successfully using MS Internet Connection Sharing over a wired or wireless LAN, please post the network settings used on the ePods. Are you using DHCP? etc...

Also, please note if you are using the v2.0x hack or some other desktop.

Thanks in advance for any help.

I'll be getting my epod soon (early this week I hope), and I plan on using a Proxim 4402-05 card in peer-to-peer mode with a laptop (wireless) and to a "server" machine that has an isa card (bridging to a wireless lan and internet connection). I already am using the laptop wirelessly, bridged to my existing connection and everything works great (using it to post this message right now). I've even solved the network-neighborhood browsing problem when running multiple subnets (you need a domain and a PDC in most cases, or you can use a Samba-Linux solution - what I'm doing).

Anyway, I'll be actively trying to work the epod into my setup, so I can add one more voice/brain to the BBS in general, and to the specific task of getting these cards to work with the epod.

Cheers,

Rich

Currently I'm using two 4402-05 pc cards to connect to the internet. I've got one in the Epods and one in my laptop. The laptop connects to the internet through a Linksys USB adapter and passes internet through the 4402 to the Epods. The Epods is running version 2.02 of the hack, and the laptop is using 98SE. The real breakthrough from the whole mess came when I switched to the new version of Symphony (2.0). I couldn't get it to work at all before that. The new software adds a bunch of functionality to Symphony and is a lot easier to set up. You can get it here http://www.proxim.com/support/symphony/software/index.shtml

Bishopwill...

Just out of curiousity, how did you go about configuring the 4402-05 card for the epod? Are you using the "stock" dll, or did you install the updated one from proxim's website? How do/did you set the security code for the adapter (so it can talk to the other wireless cards)?

I don't have my epod yet (shipped from fingerhut, just waiting for delivery), and I'm in information gathering mode. Been lurking for a month now :P

Cheers,

boykster

boykster-

I don't believe that the CE drivers work in peer-to-peer mode- according to the documentation.

I am now assuming that The CE shell hack is _necessary_ to run wireless networking. I can't see anyway for the drivers to be working otherwise. Starting from a virgin epods... (then hard reset for each additional setup)

1) Proxim (4402-05):
I have the latest 2.0 software for the Laptop running Win 98 SE and the Latest driver from the Proxim web site for WinCE (RangeLAN2).

Using all of the tools from the Proxim setup, I set up the Laptop to be a modem server with Composer. It is the Master node with security code 5. The other nodes are slave clients also with security code 5. I tested the server in all three modes (HRF, OpenAir, and Dual). Composer does not see the CE client in the probe window. I know both PC Cards work since they communicate with the Cordless Bridge and Linux box (with Proxim card) I have.

I have used address schemes 10.0.0.X and 192.168.2.X.

The upshot is that I can't get the Proxim Card to work with the epods.

2) The Orinoco Gold Card (no WEP) and SMC Barricade wireless bridge, both set to Channel 6 . The driver says there is a conflict which I can't see the name of. The TaskBar tool show no link and says it is out of range. The Gold Card is at the latest Firmware rev. (6.1.6) and the software is at the latest release (6.4) I have tried 6.1 and 4.0 drivers as well...

I have used address schemes 10.0.0.X and 192.168.2.X as well as DHCP.

Result: epods is not talkin'... slip the Gold card in the Laptop... works like a champ.

3) The Intersil compatible cards with out WEP (SMC 2632W and D-Link DWL-650) with the Intersil drivers and with the DEC drivers yield a 9.6 error (is the card inserted??) when a link check is done. And the link light is not on. Only the SMC, from time to time, will the link light on the PC Card go on, but still no connection to the driver.

I have used address schemes 10.0.0.X and 192.168.2.X as well as DHCP.

Result: epods is not talkin'... slip both cards in the Laptop... works like a champ.

For completeness here is my other post
http://www.linux-hacker.net/cgi-bin/UltraBoard/UltraBoard.pl?Action=ShowPost&Board=EpodsOne&Post=385&Idle=0&Sort=0&Order=Descend&Page=0&Session=

The epods Modem works fine.

I guess my next attempt is to use ICS some how.

Just shot an email to Proxim Tech support re: the 4402-05 peer-to-peer support for WinCE....

---my message---

Hi,

I am considering using the 4402-05 pccard product to add a windowsCE device to a proxim network (another 4402-05 card and a 4110-05 ISA card) that is running in peer-to-peer mode. I am currently using the ISA card based system to route the wireless segment to a wired ethernet LAN. Does the winCE driver you supply support peer-to-peer mode, or do I need to purchase an ethernet bridge to accomplish this.

Thanks for any help,
Regards,

---end my message---

And here's the response from their tech support

---start response---

Peer to peer is supported for windows Ce versions 2.0 and 2.11. CE is not supported at all under core version 3.0.

Best Regards,

Billy Huffman
Proxim Technical Support Specialist
bhuffman@proxim.com

---end response---

So, technically, it should work! I don't have any new technical info to add, but hopefully when I get my epod, and I sort out the specific details and post some of my network specifics if anyone's interested.

Cheers,

boykster

I'm trying to get the Epod working wirelessly with the 4402-05 symphony PC card in the Epod connected to the server with a 4110-05 PCI Symphony card using ICS. I am using the v1 CE shell hack. I haven't been able to get it to work yet. Is there anyone who has done it that would be willing to do a step by step on this for us? Especially interested on how I have to configure the settings on the server using ICS and on the epod itself. Sounds like quite a few people are interested in this topic. Help!

OK I have been reading everything I can to get my Proxim Symphony cards working.
Here is what I have
PCI Symphony card in desktop
Symphony PC card in EPOD hacked 2.0 and the new proxim.dll from proxim
When I insert card I get the little icon in the system tray for about 10 sec then it disappears
if I click on it a screen pops up just long enough to read that no master found. This screen has tabs for config accros the top and if I click on one it will go to other pages but it closes after 10 sec so I dont have time to change any thing
On the desktop there is no indication that it sees any other cars out there.
So I did a complete hard reste and copied the proxim.dll...
The exact same thing happens...
Anyone ?/Help?? What is the general concensis ? Should I take the cards back?

Anyone have it working?

Keith

You know how this stuff is - you hack away at it until it works,
then you don't know which steps were necessary and which did nothing,
and you probably didn't even notice the key ingredient as a step.
Anyway, to get this working, I had to put the Symphony card into a
IBM Z50 and set the IP address and password. I just used 192.168.0.3
in the mobile and 192.168.0.1 on Win98SE internet connection sharing.
Set up internet connection sharing to share to the proxim PCI card.
No DHCP. Set up the Maestro or conductor to share the hard disk on the
win98 box, then can explore it from epods IE with \machine\C
Find somebody with a laptop to configure the proxim card, or send
it to me with some postage and I'll set it up for you.
