Anyone want to tackle Pocket Excel and Pocket PowerPoint ?

New MessageAnyone want to tackle Pocket Excel and Pocket PowerPoint ? (modified 0 times) Randy
Let's put aside (for the moment) the complicated arguments on both sides of the licensing question. Thanks for the indulgence.

It's my understanding that to get Pocket Excel or Pocket PowerPoint running on the ePods, one would need to rip the relevant files from the ROM of a unit that contains them. Someone recently asserted that this is "impossible" to do. I suppose we've all been around long enough to have realized by now that one person's impossibility is another's challenge. Anybody have any encouraging thoughts regarding this puzzle?

I have an HP 320LX sitting next to me running CE2.0 that has Pocket Version of Outlook (Calender, Contacts, Today, Inbw), PowerPoint and Excel among other things - let me know someone needs these files or any system files in the Windows directory. Importantly, the 320LX does not have a MIPS processor.

A possible idea is to write an app that opens the binary for Excel via fopen() and writes it out to another file for transfer. Not sure if this would work, but I may try to write an app that does that..

Also PowerPoint is located on the WinCE Platform builder CDs, just hunt around for it.

Actually I got bored and just made an application to try and copy out the Excel binary.. Anyone with access to a MIPS CE device running 2.x Pocket Excel and would like to try this please leave your email so I can get in touch.

Thanks

It wont work. CE wont let you fopen (or CreateFile) a binary ROM file.

Oddly enough ROM files are copied when you do a system backup, I wonder if there is a way to extract it from the image.

No, they are not if they are marked system/rom files.

Hmm.. Ill take your word for it. How about functions exposed in some of the DLL's such as fsmain - CopyFile, or a function that can peek at the object store memory allocation?

I tried dumping them to a mips hex editor (on the device) to see if I could copy the hex code... noda.. no dice.. so close yet so far away....

Hi All,

I'm new to this board (found you thru Homevision user group) and will be receiving my epods today (UPS tracking) from Salton ordered and in stock on the 01/09/01.

Obviously looking forward to hacking it and my goal is for my wife to use it web-surfing and using it to look up outlook calendar and contacts currently on a Win98 peer to peer home network. I have been using my Hp jornada 620 with a Addtron AWS-100 and AWP-100 wireless IEEE802.11b network. I have been using several compact flash cards with my Jornada and Kodak camera so after lurking here for a week it looks like I already have most of what I need to jump-in.

I have used a couple of Handhelds over the years and I think the Velo-1 from phillips used a MIPS processor and I still have the original CR-ROMS from 1997 (The Velo died and with the help of an extended warranty thru CompUSA I was able to trade up to the Jornada, I think Velos aren't around anymore). If this would be of any use I would be happy to share with this group. I also have a 6month old Jornada with the original CR-ROMS.

Joe

Here is an idea:
At some point Microsoft has released Service Pack (What a shock) for HPC. This SP was released to manufacturers so they can put them together as needed. I downloaded couple of them, including one for SHARP Mobilon PV-5000, which has 3922 Toshiba CPU, and here is what I found:

261,129 Access.mips_r3000.CAB
69,639 CE_OS.mips_r3000.CAB
322,399 Drivers.mips_r3000.CAB
173,393 Excel.mips_r3000.CAB
2,003 IExplore.mips_r3000.CAB
706,250 Inbox.mips_r3000.CAB
250,651 PPT.mips_r3000.CAB
25,548 Time.mips_r3000.CAB
278,557 Word.mips_r3000.CAB

Looking at the size of these files it's probably safe to guess that they contain needed executables. To be honest I tried to install them but it didn't work: "Installation failed try again..." or something like that. Then I tried to install them manually opening the .CAB file and changing the extensions as needed (.DAT, .DLL, .EXE) This time the error was all too familiar: "Cannot find blahblah or some of its components" It's a lot closer, but no cigar.
At that point I gave up cause I don't need those apps anyway.
I can send all files that I found (about 6MB worth) to Randy and he can house them on his site unless there are objections.

What's the link to the service pack?

Send me an email so we can work out the details. Don' t send the files first go-round. The rand@newsguy.com address is pretty limited with respect to file sizes. I'll provide another address. Thanks!

Here's one of them. But I advise to go look for them: they are not the same from one manufacturer to another.

I opened up the MIPS Cab on the desktop for Pocket Access and copied the *.999 file out and renamed it to exe and transferred it to the epod. It shows with the icon but when it runs it says a "an error message resource could not be located". I suspect it is because there are no Pocket Access registry entries. I'll have to transfer them from the registry of my other PDA to see if it will work.

After checking out "SpreadCE" (an excellent file recommendation made here by "Asquare"), I'm ready to vote for forgetting Pocket Excel. SpreadCE includes most of the functionality of Excel 97, including multiple worksheets, macros, complex functions (even conditional ones!), functions, and even basic charting. It also imports and exports Excel 97 files as well as Pocket Excel files. The shareware author notes that Pocket Excel excludes much functionality, so warns against using the higher functions and expecting that to save in the Pocket Excel format.

This is "shareware" in the traditional sense of the word, in that it is not restricted in any way. You may use it forever, but the author requests that you send your fee if you find it useful in your work. SpreadCE downloads are here: http://www.byedesign.freeserve.co.uk

I've also mirrored the file under the Software tab on the ePods hack web site. Now if we can get Pocket PowerPoint moved over to the ePods (and perhaps Pocket Access), as well as find a good compatible calendar/scheduling program, we're all set. SpreadCE gets two thumbs up from me in the mean time though!

I've got a set of hex files for a WinCE 2.11 MIPS PDAish type thing(tm). It *looks* like there might be some interesting things in there. Anyone have any idea how to read a memory image as a file system?

Also, I'm thinking there must be something telling WinCE what address range is ROM, and thus not to allow copies from those addresses. It sure seems like there should be some way to spoof that. Something in the registry maybe?

Swan - What's up with the nicknames, they seem to be failing today

PowerPoint PROGRAM!!!!!!!!

Hey all, me and a friend stumbled across this powerpoint viewer over at tucows which led us to this site http://www.geocities.com/SiliconValley/Code/4543/products.html . The program works if you put the mfc211.dll (Downloaded from his site) file in your windows directory! The only problem I have found with his downloadable program is that the powerpoint slides are too small to really see all that well. If anyone has any luck getting this to work full screen or just bigger let me know. Thanks, Micah

Zonyl:

Are the platform builder disks available anywhere like the dev kits are? Or must one fork over several thousand dollars to MS to get the Platform Builder? I would gladly pay MS for a valid licence if ther were a full 3.0 built for the epods. Loading it onto the ePods would be another problem but not as difficult just getting a full OS image for the ePods platform.

Duvell:

You can get an "eval edition" of platform builder 3.0 on DVD from microsodt for $10. This is fully functional and has a 60 day shelf life on the platform builder itself.

Just wanted to keep this current and see where things were. I'm most interested in getting Outlook going on the epods.

Randy, how did things go with "bystander"?

Billings, how did things goes with you?

A few thoughts :

- I have access to a Casio E-100 (is this the closest known HPC unit to the epods?). Is this any use for stripping Outlook from? If so, how?
- Has anyone else noticed that the CEProbe web page has listings of registry entries which might be useful in getting things to run? Including Outlook, Access etc.
- I have (most of) the platform builder for 2.12. Is this any use? It seems to have .pdb files for Excel etc. for the MIPS3000 platform. How would I use these?
- Anything else I could be doing that would be of use in getting Outlook sorted out?
