wireless cards and epods
cards not working

New Messagewireless cards and epods (modified 0 times) wireless
Well-

I just don't know what else to do... I cannot get ANY wireless
cards to work in the epods (that makes me 0-4). The PCMCIA modem
works fine. Everyone seems to make it seem the cards are plug and play... load the drivers, plug in, type the driver name, surf! I don't get what I am doing wrong!

I have the:

epods- slightly modified; 32MB CF card inserted- ActiveSync installed.
SMC Barricade (network ANY; no encryption; Channel 6; DHCP
active; no filters/protection)
Proxim Wireless Bridge (all the different choices of configuration)
LinkSys Switch
Laptop running Win 98.

802.11b
Cards:
1) Orinoco Gold (5 volt) card.
2) D-Link DWL-650 card.
3) SMC2632W card.

Drivers:
1) The latest Firmware update (6.1.6)
Latest Driver (6.4) from the Orinoco Web Site.
2&3) D-Link and SMC2632W card
the MFCCE211.DLL file from http://www.appstudio.com/Mfc.htm
the HPCPro for the MIPS processor- the other choices did
not work.
the Intersil Driver (Prism) from http://www.skipstone.com/~oscar/ePods1_PRISM2.zip

The 802.11b drivers and control panels were much friendlier then the Proxim driver. But none of the 802.11b cards and CE drivers would "load" and could sync up with the SMC Barricade. The Orinoco Shelf tool would report "Driver not loaded", "Out of Range", etc. Also, the Orinoco driver; when the versions dialog box is viewed says the driver conflicts with... ARGGG!!! CANT READ IT- the info is cut off! It looks like there is a NIC...D..i....i; but who knows. The Intersil driver would not load as well.

The Orinoco card in a Compaq Laptop worked great. I have not tried the Intersil based cards in the Laptop yet; though I would imagine they would work fine as well.

The Intersil utility would only work when it was installed and the epods not rebooted. After the first soft reset it no longer worked.

HRF
---
Cards:
1) Proxim Symphony 4402-05 card.

Drivers:
1) The latest driver from Proxim.

When the card was inserted and Network control panel activated- the epods became very sluggish and no Internet connectivity.

The card works in the Laptop and communicates to a Linux box via the Ethernet Bridge. It also works in the Laptop with Composer and the Linux box can surf through to the Internet. epods- Zilch!

Questions:
1) What voltage should the PCMCIA cards be?
(I thought I saw mention of only 3.3v cards working...)
2) Does it matter that some of the drivers are for WinCE 2.11?
3) Are there any Network number constraints for the cards? I read in 1 article that the Symphony card for CE must have the IP address as 10.0.0.X and Netmask as 255.0.0.0.

I am feeling like I might have to change my name from wireless to teathered!

New MessageRE:wireless cards and epods (modified 0 times) wireless
Does anyone have suggestions on getting any of the above mentioned cards working?? I have looked around in the registry and I can't find anything that seems to be conflicting with the drivers...

I had some troble with my prism card for some reason after I re did the v2 hack for release. I kept my info seperate in case I ran into this. The following is my original regestry settings for the SMC 11b net card and after merging the original it workd perfect. This is my working config, so the IP info may need to be different on your system but if you use there access point it should interface fine. I did notice that DHCP did not work!! It has to have a static IP. that is what I found and the only way it would work for me. So I am just stating what I found. Take the below text within the //// (do not include the ////) starting with REGEDIT4 as the first line. Just copy it to a text file and name it prism.reg (use notepad, edit or something along that line without formating tools like word or wordpad).

Also install your drivers for the prisum prior to merging this reg. My install path in the following is:
\Storage Card\program files\PRISM2
but I don't think that should make any diffrence as long as the prisumds.dll driver is in you \windows\ directory. If you have an IP conflict change the settings in the network control panel.

Hope this helps,
-saridnour

saridnour-

A strange thing about the Intersil drivers... when I load them onto the epods, 2 show up in the network control panel. Is that a problem? Which one should I use? Should they both be set the same?

I will try the above reg hack ASAP.

Thanks!

New MessageRE:wireless cards and epods (modified 0 times) wireless
Well... still no luck... but here is what I did.

1) hard reset the epods
2) went through the calibration/start up sequence
3) ActiveSync'd the driver from a Laptop
4) Copied the mfcce211.dll file into Windows folder on the epods
5) Merged in your reg entries with astrosoft's reexplore
6) put in the Network card (SMC2632W)
7) answered the driver request with prismnds.dll
8) opened the config tool and when I go to Link it says it doesn't see the card. is the card inserted? Error 9.6

I have done a few other things like change the addresses in the network control panel, pull the card in and out, etc.

I also tried this with a D-Link DWL-650.

Neither could ever get link from the control panel.

2 things to note:

1) soft resetting causes the Intersil App never to work again.
2) The yellow light on the card flashes on, then off, then on for a sec or so (much longer than the first), then flashes again for a third time- then nothing.

Thanks in advance for your help!!

When I put your Reg hack in I get addresses

IP: 0.0.0.1
netmask: 0.0.0.2
Gateway: 0.0.0.1
DNS1: 0.0.0.2
DNS2: 0.0.0.4

Is that correct??

thanks

I had this. Delete any .cpl files in your Windows folder that were created by your installation. There is a thread on it somewhere in here.

I'm coming rather late to this game - and so far I seem to be following in the footsteps of 'wireless' - I have installed the Prism drivers for my SMC 2632W card, but no joy. I have not tried the reg hack suggested in the thread.

I am working with the 2.11 'easy' shell hack - can anybody confirm that 802.11b WILL work with that, or do I have to do the full v2.04 shell?

I am thinking of trying the Compaq driver (WL100NDS.dll) instead of the Prism - any views? Any tips on how to change the driver association, now that the PCMCIA card has already been 'recognised'?

Also, on the issue of the the 'disappearing control panel' - my experience is that I can have one or the other. If I delete PRISMCFG.cpl then I can see the control panel (thanks for that tip, SiliconIce), but not the PRISM2 App, and vice versa. Has anybody got a solution that shows me both?

Thanks for any help and tips - I like this e-Pods and I really want to get the wireless LAN working.

OK, this might get a little booring but for those of us that are trying to get this card working correctly there might be some good info. I'm not 100% sure what i did to get the card working the first time but i got it connected to my smc barricade router. only problem at that time was that i could not get into the control panel to set up the ip and when i was able to the card stopped working because of the missing .cpl (btw i'm working on 2.04 reghack) ok so here is what i did, i reset it because i wanted it to work, i tried a lot of different things including the reg listed in this thread. now i have made a lot of progress, with getting the app's both to work (the control panel and the prism app) but i can not get the card to be recognized. here is what i did. i reset my epods to get it into a semi-clean state. I then copied prism2.4000.cab file to a cf card, i then also copied mfcce211.dll to the cf card (put these anywhere) ok after doing this i started up my epod, then i put both the cf card in and the prism card in. I then ran the prism2.4000.cab file from the compact flash card, i installed the drivers/application into a directory on the cf card. this launches the prism setup app at the end. i closed out that app. i then copied the mfcce211.dll file into that installed directory. here is the part that i've not seen anyone do yet but worked for me. I then copied the prism .cpl file from the windows directory into the directory on my cf card that has the prism setup application into it. i then deleted prism's .cpl file from the windows directory. soft reset and all. I can now open up my control panel and also open up the prism app. one big problem, the prism application no longer see's the wireless card (bad thing) and i cant set it up correctly. I also tried making a dir on my cf card and setting it up with the reg below but still no luck. if anyone has an actual walk through on how to get this card working correctly or can figure it completely out with the info i just listed (i hope it helps) please post it here. thanks.

New MessageRE:wireless cards and epods - really stuck here! (modified 0 times) jfc4841

chewyboy,

It is not boring to me - 'cos I'm stuck in the same place you are! :-^)

What 802.1b card are you using? I'm trying to get the SMC 2632W card working (with the 'easy' reg hack so far).

So far I've tried the PRISM driver with and without saridnour's reg hack in this thread. I've also tried the Compaq WL100 drivers (since that is what was suggested on the Chris Herrera web page as the one to use with the SMC card) and I've tried changing the name of the card to "Instant_Wireless_-_Network_PC_CARD-317F" as was suggested by Starfire in the "LinkSys WPC11 - 802.11b Supported by ePod!" thread elsewhere on this bulletin board. I trawled through the registry looking for odd things that might be stopping this working - trouble is I don't have the knowledge to be sure, so it is a lot of trial and error. (well - mostly error, of course - or I wouldn't be writing this! :-^)

The things I am going to try next are:
1. Try using an Orinoco SILVER card (when it arrives from u-Bid) - I've downloaded those drivers from the Lucent site.
2. Try implementing the reg 2.04 hack - I'm not sure this helps at all with the basic problem - but maybe saridnour's hack works better with that version as the starting point.

Here is my wish list:
1. wireless or saridnour (or someone else who has a working solution), pops back up on this thread with a 'blow by blow' tested sequence that works for the SMC card (or the Orinoco).
2. Someone offers an opinion about either the SMC card or the Orinoco card - is either one easier than the other to get working? If neither of these are bullet proof - any other card suggestions? (Odd thing is - don't most of them run the same chip?)
3. Anything else that people have tried with some success. There do seem to be a lot of people who go 'whoopeeee I've got it working' - but no real definitive sequence that guarantees success.

The Internet has the answers to every question - right? Help please!
Thanks - jfc.

Still no success.

I have done the v2.04 hack (had to cycle through the reg import many times to get past the 'white screen'). Tried the sardinour hack (above) - did not work for me.

Then I found a specifc CE/MIPS driver for the SMC2632W at http://213.155.70.82/english/support/driver_manual/wirel.html - this installs the driver 'CW10.dll' - but still no success. A small 'improvement' is that each time I re-insert the PCMCIA card I see the 'Unknown card in socket 2' error message - so I get a chance to try different drivers I suppose.

Has anybody got any ideas? I do have a CF card in the e-Pod, and I have a null modem cable attached so that I can move stuff into the ePod - is it possible that the cable is interfering with the card seeing the driver?

All I ever get is a brief 'flash' on the SMC card when I turn on the ePod, or when I invoke the WLAN utility. Then the 'Unknown card' error. The driver that shows up in the registry is 'cw10.dll' - but when I feed that in I get nada.

I'm running out of ideas here ...........

chewyboy,

I think saridnour's email is saridnour@hotmail.com (not certain of this - but it has been published earlier in the BBS lists).

Try putting PRISMCFG.cpl in the same directory as the app is installed (program filess/Interstil PRISM2 WirelessLan/?) I sometimes have to invoke it twice after a soft re-set in order to get it working again.

I've also seen two other tips that may help (or may not)
1. Remove the SMC driver key from the registry. (I tried this - did not help me).
2. Remove the atadisk.dll file (apparently gets in the way of recognizing cards - I haven't tried this yet).

I'm probably not going to try many other things until I receive my two Orinoco Silver cards. At the moment I think the reason I/we are stuck is to do with duplicate or incorrect registry entries (some of which may be part of the original 2.04 hack). Having now been right through the archives it looks as if many people have had problems similar to the ones we are working on. Most of the trails just fade out as if people eventually just give up on it.

Since we are both working on v2.04 and the SMC2632W card maybe it would help to compare registry entries? If you are up for this and want to email me something you can reach me at jfc66@hotmail.com.

Good luck, jfc.

Here is what worked for me with the SMC card.

1. delete the smc key from the registry
2. install drivers from skipstone site
3. install card in epods
4. when driver name dialog box comes up, enter primsnds.dll

At this point the card should be working, but you can't use the control panel.

1. copy the prism*.cpl file from the windows directory to the directory where you installed the driver files.
2. delete the prism*.cpl file from the windows directory.

I now have it working with 128 bit WEP and a unique SSID.

wooooooohoooooooo finally someone that got it working that posted a way to do it. thanks a million times over. everything was correct (except the spelling of the .dll file) but that is way overlooked because it works. even after 5 hard reset's every time i tried it works. BTW if you cant get it to work, try prismnds.dll that should work. again thanks for this information.

I'm also trying to set up the SMC wireless card. I followed the steps above, where I deleted the SMC registry entry, then installed the downloaded drivers, then inserted the card and typed the driver name. When I try to run the Prism2 Status Icon program, it says "Fatal Application Error" "Application PRISMSTA.eve has performed an illegal operation and will be shut down. If the problem persists, contat the program vendor.

Program: PRISMSTA.exe
Exception: 0xc0000005
Address: 00012ecc

Does anyone have any idea what's going on? Do I need this program to work to get my card to work, since the light on the card currently blinks yellow and doesn't seem to connect to the wireless LAN.

Ok, i figured out what was wrong with the Prism2 setup program. I had downloaded the wrong MFCCE211.dll file.

Just in case anyone has a D-Link DWL-650 card and is having trouble with it, I got working like a charm on my ePods unit, running Terminal Services very nicely. Here's what I did to get it working (writing this from memory):

1. Install the Intersil Driver (Prism) from http://www.skipstone.com/~oscar/ePods1_PRISM2.zip
2. When the system detects the unit and asks for a driver name, type in PRISMNDS.DLL
3. Enter your network settings. Reinsert device as prompted.
3. Delete the .CPL file that the install program creates in your \WINDOWS directory (if you don't Control Panel locks up.)
4. Open the PRISM2 Status Icon and configure your WLAN settings.
