IE4 upgrade

I did the IE4 upgrade according to the instructions on Randy's site. It says to do a soft reboot after copying the files to appropriate directory (in my case Win_CEfiles\ifc). However, I didn't notice any changes in IE so what I did was a hard-reboot and re-imported the ie reg. This seems to have fixed the problem. Isn't a hard reboot required to copy the files over in the Windows directory?

BTW this is my first post and I want to thank those who have made hacking the epods so easy!

I did that upgrade today also. It was seemingly the same after the soft reboot. So, I did a hard reset (knowing I would lose everything since the V2 upgrade.. which wasn't much). Turns out, it went back to the white screen.. had to reimport the v2 hack registry again, had to reimport the ie4 reg hack.. did a soft reboot. made the reg mods for the cursor (though I updated the reg in the /ifc dir to reflect that mod).. then ie4 seemed to look a bit different..

Yes, I probably could have just copied the files over to the windows directy also and soft reboot but I've never been one to do things the easy way...

I was not sure how to tell if it was truely ie4 other than looking at the file size in the windows directory. Since the file size is the same as the update, I assume its correct.

It seems to work well regardless.

I noticed that the spinning "E" logo was located on the web page viewing area in v3 whereas the logo in v4 is right in the menu bar area...

Has anyone come up with a solution to the lack of bookmarks in IE4? It works awesome and the bookmarks would make it perfect...

Smakz,

Is there any way to Java working or is there another CE browser that has it? I hit many sites which kill the functionality - not to mention aol mail.

SMAKZ -

Have you had a chance to work on the IE4 fix for the bookmarks? The wife stole my Epods for her very own (she said I have enough computers and it was cute...) and is hounding me to fix it! Any help would be appreciated - thanks!

Has anyone tried making a shortcut to a website? You can do this on a Win9x/00 by right-clicking on your desktop and selecting new>>shortcut and typing in the web address. Copy this shortcut via active sync or CF. This works after you assign iexplore.exe to the filetype ".url" and even though it says that you can't select "don't ask for this type of file" it won't ask again, at least mine didn't.

If for some reason this doesn't work, just enter the URLs you want to shortcut to in the "Run..." prompt and you will always be able to select them from the drop down list and have single click access to them. I know this isn't as nice as 'Favorites' but it gets the job done.

I just have a very simple html page which I edit in PocketWord with the links I want... It's a little more tedious than "bookmarking" but then I don't bookmark a ton of pages every day either...

Smakz, can you describe what is "wrong" with the bookmarks now? Is it a file location or permissions issue?

Smakz -

I went surfing to find more info re: favorites, and found the following web page at Microsoft:

http://www.microsoft.com/windows/embedded/internetappliances/whichie.asp

which seems to say that the GENIE release of IE4 requires an OEM supplied app. to do favorites. Is this what you are currently working on?

Not that this is a solution to fix IE 4, but this may be useful:
http://www.conduits.com/ce/browser/

It's conduit's PocketBrowser. It's basically a dolled-up IE 4 with *working* favorites. However, it ain't freeware - it's a demo that'll run ~50 times, and then needs to be registered. The registeration seems reasonable ($19.95), but I'd much perfer a free solution.

Personally, I'm holding off till I can get a'hold of Win2k Server and can see what Terminal Server can do for me...

C=64: Did you do anything special to get Conduits Pocket Browser to run? I keep getting a HttpQueryInfo 122 error. I've tried several versions and methods (direct, proxy) but can't connect to any websites.
