A lot of people have mentioned starting an ePods software list, but I haven't seen one yet. I went through a lot of the message board postings and have begun to compile a list of working/non-working apps. Please contribute and let me know if you have any suggestions or changes.

Microsoft's voice recorder program works great (wish I had a compact flash, as always!). You can adjust the sound quality and the higher ones sound pretty decent, though of course better quality takes up more space. I don't remember where I got it but the file is called voiceeng.exe, I did some kind of ftp search on cnet.com I think. Anyone have a direct link? Couldn't find it on Microsoft's site either...

Wonderful site, Mix! Thanks for the link, btw: I've linked back to your incredible resource from under the Software tab on the ePods hack web site.

JC88, as for Microsoft Voice Recorder 1.0, here's a link:

I've been using Microsoft Voice Recorder and it works great when saving recordings to the ePods itself but I only get an error message along the lines of "Cannot save to Storage Card" when I set it to save to the CF card. Any ideas or am I the only one with this problem?
01-22-2001 06:39:23

New MessageRE:The ePods Software List -- please contribute! (modified 0 times) Randy
Rich, create a \My Documents subdirectory on your Compact Flash card. Then, inside that, create another folder called \Voice Notes. In your Voice Recorder software, select that subdirectory (\Storage Card\My Documents\Voice Notes\) as your selected save folder. Tweak with it a bit, and you'll get it to work.

Great, I'll try that Randy. I created a My Documents folder on the CF card but not the Voice Notes folder. I'm sure that will work. Thanks!

Rich, I remember having to fiddle with it quite a bit in order for it to finally work. Keep us posted! (I wish I remembered the exact steps for you.)

I still can't seem to get it to save to the CF, so if you can think of what you did to make it work please let me know. I made the folder and everything but still get the same error message. How exactly can I specify it to save to the Voice Notes folder? The only option I see is to save to external storage when available.
01-22-2001 14:06:59

New MessageRE:The ePods Software List -- please contribute! (modified 0 times) Randy
Ok, Rich, I just investigated to see how I've got it set up. Here's what you do. Don't worry about setting a default folder for saves. Leave that part alone. Then MANUALLY save recorded files to your Compact Flash. I happen to be saving them to the "\My Documents\Voice Notes" subdirectory on the CF card, but really that's irrelevant, it turns out. When you click the Save button (the middle one at the top), you'll see a dialog box strangely titled "properties" with two pull-down menus -- one for the major location (the Compact Flash card, for example), and one for the subdirectory you created. It's an odd setup there. When you save the file, it will move the file from your Voice Recorder browser to the subdirectory -- i.e., it vanishes from the Voice Recorder active play list. To play the file, you then go to the subdirectory and double-click it. (The CE Shell hacks include splay.exe, and you'll need that to do this.) I created an alias to that holding folder in my start menu next to where the Voice Recorder application is for easy access. Sorry for the left turn there, but I hope this helps you out.

Having problems running VNC viewer (included in CE Shell hack 2.0x). Double-tap the icon and nothing happens. I downloaded it again and tried to run it with the same result. Anyone using this currently?

New MessageRE:The ePods Software List -- please contribute! (modified 0 times) Rich
Thanks again for your help Randy. I am now able to save to the CF! Now my only problem is that I can't seem to play .wav files probably due to the splay.exe file you mentioned. I am using the 1st v1.00 hack, but a while back I did notice that you added splay.exe so I added it to my \Windows folder. However I get the error message cannot find 'splay' or one of its components. Is there something else I need to do besides put splay.exe in the Windows directory? I associated .wav files with splay but it can't seem to find splay.
01-22-2001 14:34:45

New MessageRE:The ePods Software List -- please contribute! (modified 0 times) Rich
Ah hah! The splay.exe in my Windows directory was actually called sndplay.exe for some reason. I just changed the name to splay.exe and it works fine.

I think it's safe to add AvantGo to the list of software that will work. Installed it via ActiveSync, then manually set it up to "Modem Sync" and it works like a charm. Once installed, you can completely remove AvantGo from your desktop PC.

PowerPoint PROGRAM!!!!!!!!

Hey all, me and a friend stumbled across this powerpoint viewer over at tucows which led us to this site http://www.geocities.com/SiliconValley/Code/4543/products.html . The program works if you put the mfc211.dll (Downloaded from his site) file in your windows directory! The only problem I have found with his downloadable program is that the powerpoint slides are too small to really see all that well. If anyone has any luck getting this to work full screen or just bigger let me know. Thanks, Micah

MASJM: Yup, and both the 48 and 49 ROMS (and emulation) work. The CE hacked version seems to have a fixed screen size made for the little PDA's, so it could look better. There are config files for larger sizes (up to 1280x1024), but don't work due to the fixed size of the CE port. As to where to get the ROMs, d/l the software and read the dox, and check the links, I'm sure you'll find something. If you're an HP fan, I'm sure you're aware of http://www.hpcalc.org/ they've got a lot of great stuff, worth looking there for files. Also, be aware, that to be legal you need to own the calculator you are using the ROM image for.

synkless: There is a thread somewhere on this board (somewhat old now) that talked about emailing yourself the files to a hotmail account, and then downloading the to the ePods from there. Try searching for hotmail and see what that gives.

Nice crosswords game, full screen, touch screen

Cyber Snake
http://www.jimmy.com
Cool looking game, use arrows on keyboard to control giant worm in space and collect energy.
Can't figure out how to shoot yet. 1/4 screen, color, touchscreen

Emerald Hunt
http://www.evolutionary.net
OK game, tank collects jewels and bombs way out of maze. 1/4 screen. black and white. almost gay.

LOCE: Live the Life on CE
http://sixxac.com/ce
Gay game, I don't really understand it. Might be cool on acid or something.

DIDN'T WORK:

MazeCraze PPC
Zio Metalion (really cool 3D game)
JimmyArk2
PocketIndy
JFIVE_100_EN (that's the file name)
CECards
Flamingo
CBMan2
Arkanoid2
eWallet

If you have any of the "DIDN'T WORK" working, please let me know. Or try them even, maybe you'll get lucky. I was hoping Zio Metalion would work becuase Zio Golf did, but no such luck.

hey all

i think i'm taking over the epods software page at http://www.geocities.com/epodssoftware

Stuff that I'll be including/doing? I'm doing size of download, whether or not the proggie is full screen or not. What else should I include. I've got half the stuff done so far.

I would suggest including dll's that are needed; install the program straight to the flash card or use activesync; obvious tricks needed to play the game (hitting shift on the keyboard and then the arrows); tips from discussion board on how to get the program to work (extracting the executable and renaming mips file to .exe); and if the windows directory files can be moved successfully to the flash card (doubtful but cool).

This is a great project and if you need any help let me know.

Here are some neat freeware programs that work great on the epods.... http://www.syntactsoft.com/~pbalogh/download.shtml

They were reviewed on the Gadgeteer website. I especially like the image viewer.

Enjoy!

www.developerone.com has some WinCE software that works on the ePods.

I have tried a few of the apps like ClassPro and it seems to work pretty good.
It could be used as a general organization tool as well as for classes.

This site has a lot of CE stuff, some of which works on ePods.
I have tried the Jimmy FunPack/Crystal Tower game, seems to work ok.

Here is the main list, lots of stuff to try.

Here is another site (ZDNET) that has quite a bit of CE software:

http://www.zdnet.com/downloads/ce/

Quite a few programs here work on the epods (I will try to post as I remember all those that I tried that worked). For instance, those who do not want/need all of the functions of the complex HP Emulator Calculator you can try the Tascal calcualtor which is simple and works great on the epods:
http://hotfiles.zdnet.com/cgi-bin/texis/swlib/hotfiles/info.html?fcode=CE00012I&b=zdce_cat

The regular guidelines for software that might work on the epods apply here. Don't expect too many software titles listed for Windows CE 3.0 to work on the epods.

BTW Whoever is in charge of the software list need to move ICQ to the "working" list--see my post in the thread that was just bumped up.

I don't know if anyone has tried this already, but this weekend, I tried installing AIM 1.0, and found out that it doesn't download the buddy list from the server (which all the new clients do). I tried AIM 2.0 for CE, and it worked for me. I'm using the 1.02 Easy hack. It downloads the buddy list and works well.

Sorry if someone has already reported AIM v2 for CE is working...
