Single Missing Component preventing LAN Sync?
Yet another Activesync thread.

New MessageSingle Missing Component preventing LAN Sync? (modified 0 times) Wintermute
I have been trawlin technet etc looking for ways to get the Activesync working over Ethernet,
and keep coming across a series of steps which don't seem to match the dialogs on the epods.

After some more digging, the missing component seems to be the async.asy file.

I seem to recall something about ROM files being copy inhibited? if so, does this file appear in any of the SDKs?

The async.asy file is a dummy file, used just to launch the remote manager. What's missing is pegobj.dll and the other syncronization dll's on the device. You have to establish a partnership before you can network activesync.

do we have a hard list of what these files are, and whether or not they can be copied onto the device?

I've researched this a little myself. Here are a few USENET posts that go into more detail.

http://www.deja.com/getdoc.xp?AN=713854288

http://www.deja.com/getdoc.xp?AN=571236273

http://www.deja.com/getdoc.xp?AN=504413741

http://www.deja.com/getdoc.xp?AN=652363385

and finally here is the link to the FAQ that had the registry info:

http://www.entelechyconsulting.com/EmbeddedFAQ/Communications/default.htm

Hopefully with a little effort we can crack this problem. I'd love to retire my null modem cable...

FYI,
This is how I have decided to solve the network sync problem...

Setup:
2 ePods with Addtron 802.11b cards (w/ Cisco-Aironet Access Point).
(I have several non-ePods systems with Cisco-Aironet 802.11b cards)
Desktop system with 98se and ActiveSync installed (on wired net).

Process:
If the application I want to install into the ePods does not directly
provide the CAB file(s), I then run the app's install EXE on the
Win98se system (without any null serial cable connected). When the
install app attempts to 'sync' with the ePods, it fails (since no
ePods is attached). Once the attempted 'sync' fails, the install
app puts the CAB files into a sub-directoty within the ActiveSync
directory. I then (via the wireless network) browse the Win98se
machine from the ePods and directly execute(wceload) and install
the CAB file from there...

Caveat:
Note: If you don't want the ePods to erase the CAB file, then the
directory of CAB files should be shared read-only.

I know this may seem convoluted, but it works !!!!

By the way, I keep the CAB files copied/archived in another area
(directory), so that, I can run Add/Remove in the Control Panel
to uninstall the associated install app from my Win98se system.

Ultimately, I may create an archive CDR full of just CAB files for
the various apps I will have 'installed' on my ePods...

.
.

Great idea Wirelessly_from_ePod, you must have read my mind....

I have just started to do just that (after my first hard-reset and having to face the serial cable again).

Cheers

also running wireless :P

Don't know if this helps Wirelessly_from_ePod, but with winzip installed I can right-click on desktop computer and open up some exe files and just extract cab file out of the installation file.

Wirelessly ---

How much was your Aironet access point? I've seen outrageous pricess for Cisco Aironet 340 APs
ranging from 900 - $18K, when I can pick up a Linksys WAP for $225. That begs my next question,
can I intermix different brands of 802.11b wireless cards (Aironet, Addtron, Linksys) with a
WAP base station like the Linksys, Addtron, or Aironet?

I have only mixed and matched 802.11b cards with my Aironet/Cisco
Access Point -AP340- (i.e. Aironet, Addtron and SMC cards).

My AP340 and PCI/PCM-340's were purchased from www.provantage.com
(approx: US$900.00)
(the US$18,000 price is for a 20 PC-Card and AP340 bundle).

I bought the AP340 for one main reason... It was the only
dependable 802.11b hardware available at the time. Plus,
the airports in my area use the same equipment, also a company
here has 'lit up' the downtown area with 802.11b signals using
Cisco/Aironet equipment...

In fact, just tonight, I helped a friend get two ePods online
with a 3 card Aironet/Cisco setup (one PCI card in a desktop)
with an AP-340.

P.S.
I do not work for Cisco nor Aironet...

Wirelessly, Can you please take a look at my setup and lend some advice.:
I am sick over this not working.
I have a Dlink 650 wireless on epods with the Intersil prism2 driver. I installed driver, installed card, typed in proper name when it found card, deleted prismcfg.cpl from winwindows, installed mfcce211.dll to windows diretory. I did soft reset.
I have a flashing green light on the wireless card but I can NOT run the prismta configuration program- i get a fatal exception error upon clicking on it. Noone has replied as to whether this program works on their epod or not.
I can the epods ip from the epods successfully. I'm running 1.02 easy hack.
I'm trying to set up ad hoc internet connection sharing on my cable modem at my desktop. (i can't get that end working yet either but that is another story.)

SpaceGhost, I can report that the Prism Config program and monitor icon works correctly when used with the Prism dll and SMC card and the 2.03 hack. I do no believe it ran correctly when I was using 1.00. We are way off topic so you might get quicker response in a thread that is more specific to your problem. Good Luck

Wirelessly_from_ePod,

I've done exactly what you are doing to install files onto my epods since I couldn't get activesync to work. The one software that I can't do this with is Avantgo (which I desperately want to get working). Avantgo will actually check for a partnership before dumping cab files to the activesync directory. Has anyone got the cab file for Avantgo?

Also, are there other offline web browsing programs out there? I want to grab a few websites before leaving for work each day to browse on the bus.

I've been looking around for more hints to enable ActiveSync over ethernet and I've found a little lead. Under the HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Comm\RasBook registry key are the entries the connections used in the "Communications" control panel. According to http://www.cegadgets.com/winceregfaq.htm "each subkey represents a connection type. RAS phonebook entries are also stored here.

Now, I created a new subket called network under Rasbook and sure enough, "Network" showed up under the Connection dialog. But of course it did nothing. There is a 940 byte binary value associated with the "IR" and "Connect to PC @ 19k" keys, but I have no clue what they do.

Just a heads up; it would be great if we could get activesync to work over ethernet...

if u read carefully, the problem is that you CANNOT create a partnership with the epods and the docking pc.
