Help Please, installing Prism2 Driver

New MessageHelp Please, installing Prism2 Driver (modified 0 times) duvell
I have done this before so I know it works. I installed the Prism2 generic 802.11b driver for use with an SMC wireless card on a 2.0 system. I had some hardware porblems with the access point and had to return it.

I received a new access point and pc card, still SMC. I had reloaded the system since I installed so I needed to install the prism2 drivers again and I cannot get things to work! The card is good so I must be forgetting something in the install. Here is what I did, if I missed something please tell me.

After a couple of attempts, I decided to start from scratch so I reloaded the virgin epods image and did a reset. Then I loaded the v2.0 hack again so I would have a clean system.

I downloaded the Prism2 drivers here http://www.skipstone.com/~oscar/ePods1_PRISM2.zip
Started ActiveSync, unziped the archive and ran Prism2ForWinCE2d11.exe

It made the connection and I told it to install in the default directory. It downloaded the program to the ePods and installed it. It then popped up a configuration panel for the card.
The defaults were fine to make an initial connection.

I then did a soft reset so any registry changes etc. would take effect. I tried inserting the card but I never get the popup from the OS asking which driver to use. Its as if it does not recognize that the card is being inserted.

I tried it again but on battery power and it detects that I put the card in because it asks if I want to run the card on battery power. I enter yes, but it still does not ask for the driver. If I run the config utility to set options, it gives an error that the driver is not loaded and asks if the card is installed in the machine.

I removed the prismcfg.cpl from the windows directory so I could run the control panel. I ran the network configuration and it shows the Prism driver. I looked at its properties and it is set for DHCP and everything looks okay. When I exit from this popup it says I need to remove and reinsert the card for the changes to take effect. I do this but the card is not seen.

I also tried useing a static address and nameserver because some people have had problems with DHCP. But the driver never gets loaded.

What am I missing? I feel foolish for asking since I've done this before! Any help is appreciated.

Is the light on the card in the epods on?
If it is not than you probably need to do what I did to get it working. I read on the board that you should delete the key in the registry, than when you insert the card it will give you the pop up and all should be fine. It worked for me. I forgot who said this, but thanks.

In the registry go to
HKEY_lOCAL_MACHINE
DRIVERS
PCMCIA
THEN DELTE THE SMC KEY

GOOD LUCK.

Thanks ngav, for passing that information along. I will give it a try this evening.

I did forget to mention that I get no LED activity on the PC Card after I plug it in.

Thanks ngav! Removing the SMC registry key did the trick. I'm posting this from my ePods over my wireless link.

Now that I have the card working, I have a related followup question.

How do I get the information I enter into the card configuration utility to be saved? Inparticular I am refering to the WEP information. I running the AP with 64 bit WEP.

When I configure the SMC card with the prism config utility, I enter the key manually and tell it to use WEP 64.

Each time I start a new connection, like ofter power off, none of the information is saved and I have to enable WEP again and enter they key.

How do I get this information stored so I do not have to enter it each time I start?

Thanks, duvell

Duval and everyone else:

Did you ever figure out how to save the configuration settings?

Thanks,

Originally, I was entering the actual WEP key, as a 10 digit hex number. Doing it this way, it never seemed to get saved as part of the configuration. I tried to generate the keys from a passphrase. I did not know what phrase would generate the specific key I needed so I just entered anything and generated the keys. I then over wrote Key 1 with the specific WEP key I needed and selected key 1 as the key to use.

After doing it this way, my WEP key has been saved and I have had no problems since.
