Help! Battery problem

New MessageHelp! Battery problem (modified 0 times) gt6872c
I had previously only really used my Epods using the AC power cord, but when I unplug it despite the battery meter showing 100%, I can only get about 45 sec - 1 minute worth of juice. I suspect that my battery is bad. I haven't opened the epods yet, but I was wondering if these were easily replaceable and if anyone knew where to find a replacement. Any help that anyone could provide would be greatly appreciated. Thanks!

I hate to say it but most likelt you'll have to make a new pack. Its just 6 NiMH AA cells with solder tabs and shrink wrapped. Someone (I think Glitch) mentioned that it does have a thermal sensor of some sort also. The connector and thermal sensor could be salvaged and used to make a new pack. Thomas distributing has good prices on NiMH and I think they even carry AA's with solder tabs on them to make up custom packs.

make sure when the AC adapter is plugged in, and the power control panel says it's 'CHARGING" the batteries. and the power led is "RED"

if it shows it is charging the batteries, and you still only get a few minutes of battery life, then you might have to get a new battery pack.

someone said this earlier, the batteries in epod are 2700mAh rated, if you buy 1200mAh NiMH, then your battery storage capacity is that much less than the 2700mAh rated NiMH batteries.

Isn't 2700mAH the total for all 6 cells? I don't see how it could be 2700 per cell as even the best NiMH AA's are around 1600-1800 range right now. I'm guessing that it wouldn't be 6*mAH=total because of some sort of loss x ammount of cells in series. I'm no EE so I can't say for sure.

My control panel does not say charging when it is plugged in (I get a yellow bar with three dashes above it). Furthermore, the LEDs next to the power button don't seemto function at all. perhaps there is a connection problem?

Check the output of your AC adapter too.

If you are looking for NiMH sellers that carry solder-tabs, you might try the "short list" of sellers I maintain at http://www.fatwallet.com/forums/messageview.cfm?catid=18&threadid=21054

I didn't break that list down into who sold solder-tabs, but there is one other called Digi-key that sells many sizes of solder-tabs. So, if the ePods-1 uses 2/3 length AA cells, then you can get those at Digi-Key instead of at Thomas. Always check the actual size of solder-tab cells before you order because when it comes to solder-tabs, there are "shorter" versions of AA cells out there in various battery packs. Basically, they are the same diameter, but shorter (I haven't checked my battery pack).

I had mine out the other day but didn't think to check that. They do apear to be full length. I just layed three AA cells across the battery door and it is long enought for three full size cells. I'm about to leave for work so I can't accually check.

Is there anyway to fix the fact that the battery is not charging? Thanks!

Has anyone figured out the actual battery specifications. Obviously each AA cell isn't 2700 mah, and surely not 450 mah...so soldierman must be right about there being some kind of loss. Anyone know for sure what each individual cell is?

The packs are made from 6 x AF Nickel Metal Hydride batteries each rated at 2700mAh 1.2V and these cells are classed as Industrial Sized in the UK. I guess you won't get these cells "over the counter" or in your local Ratshack, you'll need to find a specialist supplier for them. You could try a hobby shop to see if they can get them.

Oh ye, AF cells are bigger in diameter than AA cells but are the same length.

AF 17mm dia
AA 14.5mm dia
Both 50mm long

This is metric, Europe you know, I'll leave you to convert it.

Did anyone successfully re-create the battery pack? I am in the same issue where my ePod looks like it's charging, but only holds a charge for 10 mins.

So, I went to DigiKey and was searching for batteries. This is what I found. I'm aware that they aren't the correct physical size AF, but rather AA, and AAA. Since these are both smaller and the batterypack would sit inside the enclosure, I don't think this matters too much. I could be wrong.

I went to: http://www.digikey.com/digihome.html and search the bolded part numbers below. The sales tech. said the fact the milliAmp hours was higher then the offical ePod spec. wouldn't negativly impact the device, rather increase performance, and life. I'm not sure how the mAh comes into play when it comes to re-charging and memory.

Anyway, these two seem to be close matches of the mAh, and voltage.

Thoughts?

I think this is what we have:

Nmhi 7.2v 2700ma (6 "A" cells in series)

"AA" might fit but the mAh will be lower.

I get the "low battery" message after about 1 minute, yet it'll run for 4 hours with the message popping up every so often. I think I have 1 bad cell.

I'll look at your links. 3000mAh would be great.
