What use is the infra-red port? Has anyone managed to get it to communicate with an IrDA equipped 'phone for wireless internet access? Can it be used for activesync to a notebook? I've done everything with a CF card so far.

Search the threads, people have acivesynced with it. There is also a thread about using it will an IR modem on a cell phone. Just use the search feature on the boards.
I've actually printed Word documents to an HP 4050 LaserJet with a Irda plug in, and my other boss's HP LaserJet 6 has an Irda port built in, haven't tried it but I assume it will work also. Blew my mind away when I tried it, takes a little while for it to transfer the data to the printer but you shoulda seen my jaw drop when the printer started printing! This was using a v1 hack, v2 seems to have it too.

I heard someone is trying to make a remote control with it.
I don't know how, but that's an interesting idea.

I had a bit of a search before posting but didn't find anything relevant. Probably just me not knowing quite what to search for. I found discussion of connecting the 'phones using cables, but I don't have cables for any of my 'phones and just use infre-red with my notebooks. BTW Here in the UK I get internet access via my cellphone for 1.1p per minute (probably about 2 cents after tax and currency conversion) at all times of the day! Shame it's only 9600 bps.
Please let me know thread subjects/dates if I've missed something.

Ian, I'm in the UK and have happily (albeit slowly at 9600) used my ePOD to connect to the Internet using an IR connection to my Nokia 7110. You don't need any additional drivers - just setup a remote network (remnet) entry on the ePOD that uses IR rather than COM1.

Thanks for the feedback. My Motorola Timeport tri-band is currently in the US with a colleague. I'll try it with the epods when it gets back.
To err is human, to really f#@k it up, you need a hacker.

Triod, are you saying that you've used skycommander on the epods and it works? Just wanted to make sure I understood you, since the website says it only works on windows CE 2.0 and higher.

On other WinCE devices, there is an option under the File menu to Receive or
Send to IR. Does anyone know how to get this option working on ePods?

I use my infrared to sync with my notebook PC. I never purchased a USB cable and the syncing works well.

Skycommander sounds cool but from their website.....
MIPS
I've done some reading up on the datasheets and user manuals of the various MIPS processors(NEC and Philips) used by Windows CE devices, and the conclusion is that the Consumer IR driver cannot be ported to these MIPS platforms. This is due to the lack of certain features on the IR modules of the various MIPS CPUs. Hence, the same implementation of the Consumer IR driver on the SH3 cannot be applied on the MIPS.

"I use my infrared to sync with my notebook PC. I never purchased a USB cable and the syncing works well."
Wow, that sounds really cool. So you've done this with your epods? So what would I need to buy in order to activesync via infrared between my epods and my pc (which has no IR port)?
My bad....
after doing some research on the HP CE devices, that and really trying to force the epod to accept the software...
it is concluded that the Skycommander does not work on the Epods at this time
sorry to get everyones hopes up

Busdepot(response): I purchased a desktop IR adapter from Mobileplanet for 26 bucks. Their P/N MP970230. Works great to sync with my Casio E115(CE device-same MIPS processor)
Pete(question)What did you do on the Epods to start-up the IR sync??

Other than sync files mentioned I only set up an ir port for comm. Turn on your IR on your NB. Then connect using your Epods. Make sure u set active sync to use IR.
