ePods ActiveSyncing with Windows 2000 Pro

first off, great discussion board. i've been slowing digesting all of the past threads, and installed ActiveSync 3.1 for Win 2000 on my computer. i hacked the ePods so that it has the three necessary files to run the PC Link.lnk. well, i run it. it executes but can't connect to the PC. i've tried going the other way and have my computer detect the ePods and nothing either. i've tried 8 different cables and no dice. before i shell out $30+ bucks on a cable linked from the site ($11 shipping, what crap!), i'd like to make sure i've done everything i can here first. no, i didn't have the pcmcia modem plugged in. yes, i hard reset it to let the activesync install. yes, i'm using a belkin db9f/db9f cable that others said has worked. under hardware profile, it says the serial ports are working and no conflicts. is they a way to check them? perhaps i need to change their speed or settings? maybe a special dance or sacraficial offering to the ePods gods?

I am using the Belkin cable and Windows 2000.

The problem I had for awhile was that I was not running the connection program on the ePods when I was running the activesync setup.

Maybe my recollection on this is a big fuzzy, but I think you have to run the program in the Connection folder on the ePods, then run the setup for activesync where it tries to detect the device. I believe that this solved my problems...

Hope this works for you as well!

The first time I Synced I had to run the PCLink on the epods and the ActiveSync "Get Connected" at the same time.

My more permanent solution was to create an Incoming Connection in Networking for the serial connection. Then on the epods I created a new connection for the serial port at 115,200bps.
I also set that connection as the default ActiveSync connection on the ePods.

Now I can surf the Internet over the serial connection AND ActiveSync at the same time.

If you need a step by step then post and I'll try to get one asap.

Had the same problem. The fix is to make sure the com port on Win2K and the Epods are using the same bps!!!

Hello all..

I have to thank all you guys for all the great tips on this board.. I got my Epods yesterday and I had the unit completely hacked in 10 minutes with the instructions on Randy's board and in this forum..

I can seem to find a single place to have all the activesync tips. I have mine hooked up and synced with my desktop as a guest so that I can install files onto it, but it took forever to figure out that there was a problem with my cable. I did the pins 1 & 6 to pin 4 trick on my laplink cable, and that did the trick.

Now that I have ActiveSync up and running, I can only sync it at 19,200. Nothing faster works and I can't seem to find any switches in the repllog.exe utility to change the speed. I tried using switches with the .exe in a command line window, but that didnt' reveal any options for communication speed.

I have created a new connection using remnet.exe at a much faster speed, but it doesn't work with ActiveSync to install programs. I have been able to use the new connection with MochaPPP to browse the internet through my serial port, and also to sync up my Avantgo channels at 115,200. Now if only I could get ActiveSync to work at that speed.

Anyone have any tips?

Sinner, can you please put together your tips into an FAQ or something? That would really help a lot of people.

Thanks.

well, right now, i used remnet to make a 115200 connection, turned active sync to detect and tried to connect. it is working right now--the little green wheel is spinning--but it is taking quite a while. is that normal? the otions like synchronize and such are not active.

That's the same thing I was getting when I tried connecting at high speeds.. The epods looks like it connects, but the ActiveSync window never recovers and doesn't allow me to select any options.

I have a differnet problem with win2k active sync and IR, the problem is that as soon as I run active sync I get the ir icon popup in the taskbar saying epods in range but active sync does not find anything, it looks as though win2k is trying to use something called wireless link instead of active sync.

Has anyone else had a similar problem ?

i do not have an IR port so i am talking our of my ass here, but how about:

Network and Dialup Connections -> Make New Connection -> Connect directly to another computer (host) and then select IR port.

i did not have good luck with the Make New Connection thing, but it mightbe what you need in IR

No that won't work either, not to worry I'll stick to using a dial up connection into our RAS box.

So I finally figured out too. I was trying to set up the modem speed at the make a connection panel on my win2k machine, it really needed to be set in the device manager. I then set up a connection on remnet at the 115.200 speed and it worked. It took a couple of tries for the two machines to see each other but it worked. I'm activesyncing faster, although it still seems slower than it should be.
