Surf the Web with null cable - No ethernet card needed

New MessageSurf the Web with null cable - No ethernet card needed (modified 0 times) Curious
Came across a great article which I adopted to an epod. I can now surf with a null cable, no ethernet card. Here is the link.

http://www.artech.se/~sandblom/psion_proxy_internet.html

Instead of wingate I used AnalogX

http://www.analogx.com/contents/download/network/proxy.htm

You have to first make the dial-up connection and then use IE

I'm using mine thru a cable modem. Enjoy!

Your post renewed my efforts to get this working again. I had tried before by using Win2k Server's Network and Dial-Up Connections options but nothing seemed to work. I finally got it to work AFTER I plugged my epods modem back in! I got some new options on my epod with the modem plugged in that I didn't get when it was not plugged in. That's the key. The rest is pretty much straightforward.

Thanks for the links -- I'm now using the proxy you mentioned to make this post -- even better, I'm doing it from my living room via a wireless card to my laptop upstairs which is dialed into my isp. If only I didn't have to wait for spring to get my broadband connection...

THIS THING IS SO DAMN COOL I JUST CAN'T STAND IT!!!!!

Curious,

I have cable modem connection as well. However, my main computer uses DHCP to get an IP address. How do you set up yours? what do i have to do on my ePod to fet it working?

Thanks in advance,

MASJM

So, if I can surf via a null modem cable, is there any way to do this wirelessly? Is it possible to buy a "wireless" DB9 connector (one that communicates using either IR or RF rather than with an actual cable)?

Run "winipcfg" to determine the ip address for the PC and if you use AnalogX use that IP address as the proxy and 6658 as the port and see if it works.

Curious,

I have already tried that. I setup my PC okay, but am not sure what you need to do on the epod side. In the network icon there are two driver, one the "NE2000 Compatible Ethernet Driver" the other "PROXIM RangeLAN2 Driver" do i need do anything with them? If so, what?

Does Activsync need to be running (I try that also)? Anyway, anything you can tell me what i need to set on the epod side is appreciated.

My epod is at home. I will give you step by step later. You do not use the network settings or Activsync. You go to remnet and setup a "make a new connection", if you go thru the article it will give you add'l detail. Otherwise, I will get more for you tonight.

Curious,

Thanks for the hint. I forgot about the remnet file. I got it to work now.

Thanks again

I can't seem to get a connection established. Every time I try to connect, the dial-up server immediately hangs up after answering and my ePods pops up an alert saying "Disconnected." The Psion 5's ability to specify a RAS script in the "Internet" control panel is not to be found on my ePods (it doesn't even have that control panel at all), so the article is of no help there. This is on the 1.02 shell hack, with the modem plugged in. Did anyone who has it working have any other preferences to set besides the ones in the "Configure..." dialog of the Direct Connection properties?

Make sure your config is 115,200, 8, none,1, hardware

Under TCPI settings, I unchecked "user Server Assigned IP and my ip address reads the default 192.168.55.100

Under name servers its checked to use server assigned address

Yes, I used the easy hack

Thanks for the help. I just tried it again and it worked once I hung up my modem (pause for laughter.) Then I was able to connect my ePods, and when I tried to connect my modem again Windows gave me an actual error message -- the dial-up adapter was already in use. Ahhh. So I added a second dialup adapter, rebooted, and all was well.

win95 computer on t3 network @ University
installed dialupnetworking 1.3
installed Analog X
install "modem" (null cable) with specified driver

I am currently connected, (so says the desktop and the epod) but i cannot connect to anything through IE.

Running easy hack. What to do?
