Please Help! I'm Stuck on Step 6 of the 2.04 Hack
Need Help

New MessagePlease Help! I'm Stuck on Step 6 of the 2.04 Hack (modified 0 times) Techknight
Okay, I'm able to import the registry successfully. After I've imported the 204 registry file, I do a soft reset. The blue screen comes on with the desktop items. On the instructions, it says after the soft reset, do a hard reset. However, after I do a hard reset, I get the white screen without the desktop items again. Do I just not do the hard reset? Also, when I install Calligrapher, when the installation is done, it prompts me to reset. After a soft reset, I get the callibration thing and I lose the blue screen and the desktop item. I am only left with the white screen as through a hard reset was done. Can anyone help me? Any help is appreciated. Thanks!

Techknight, If I understand your problem correctly, Step 6 Randy's page describes the solution. Re import the registry several times, you do not have to exit the program each time. Randy says Hard reset after this, I agree with you that the final reset should be a soft one not a hard one. That is what works for me. The point is if you see the blue background and everything works then you are there. I do not know what your Calligrapher problem is, but if you did not fully complete the 2.04 hack it could be related.

Oh it's working fine now and also the Calligrapher program. I have not done a Hard Reset yet and I fear if I do it, I'll lose the blue screen and the desktop icons again. Well it's not a problem, I can still recover the background and desktop items with a import and a soft reset. Thanks for the help!

Hey, thanks for the tip, you're right. I'll rewrite that. "Blue screen" definitely signifies success irrespective of where you are in the import registry / soft-reset / hard-reset cycle. I should have said something like this instead, "If you don't see the blue screen of success after doing the soft-reset, then do the hard-reset / import registry / soft-reset cycle until you do." Much better, thanks!

Randy,

I went through too many cycles to count trying the soft/hard reset with registry import along the way. Even though I got the "go-ahead" blue screen several times, many of the Start menu links were broken. I finally solved the problem by using the Astrosoft registry editor instead of the Tascal registry editor to import the v204.reg file. On an unrelated note, I am still having problems getting my ethernet card to work (I can ping it from the desktop (IP address assigned via DHCP), but when I try to ping the desktop from the ePods, it doesn't work...).

After playing with this for quite a while, I'm convinced there's something not quite right in the ePods System folder, or we'd be able to preserve the appropriate state across a reboot. ePods did this from the factory, so it's clearly possible.

Has anyone written up exactly what happens during a cold (hard) reset? Exactly what the process is by which files get copied, and in particular what happens with the registry, should help ID the problem here. The problem appears to be registry related, so if we can figure our what's going on there and stuff the registry with the right stuff in the ePods System folder, this might work.

Oh, BTW, I get the "hack completed" dialog box every time I do a hard reboot - without more knowledge of the boot process, this problem is likely to make the v 2.04 hack pretty useless. (If I can't do a cold boot, then that setup is pretty useless, as I won't rebuild everything every singel time MS needs me to clean out its plumbing...

I think I'm stuck in the same way, except a bit worse in that when I do the soft reset after the "Registry Shell Hack completed" message comes up, I get a dark blue WinCE background, and a mouse arrow, yet nothing else - no start menu, icons, or anything. Bringing up the keyboard and trying to Alt-Tab is futile, and soft resets bring up the white background. I can't do the suggested "cycle" of reimport-soft-hard because I can't bring up the taskmanager anymore. At this point I basically have to start from ground zero (resurrection - http://www.karmapc.com/epods/1.htm) and restore everything again. I've gone through deleting every non-read-only file in the windows directory and blowing away the entire registry too - i'm not sure what else to do at this point. Anyone have any info on what exactly a working windows directory and registry looks like? Any help would be great - thanks much! (and thanks especially to Randy and everyone who came up with and documented the hacks in the first place, you guys rock)
