16 bit color with terminal services?

New Message16 bit color with terminal services? (modified 0 times) tinker
I finally got around to setting up terminal services for the epods. However, when I log on thecdesktop bitdepth goes back to 8 (256 colors). Am I overlooking something. I've tried editing the reg, but it persists to stay at 8bit.

Any suggestions.

Yes, apparently 256 colours is all you get until Whistler TS comes out.

Whistler isn't the answer, apparently. I'm running Whistler, and while a Windows 95/98/ME/2000 TS client can get up to 24 bits of color, apparently the Windows CE client is hard-coded to set up only an 8-bit display.

WindowsCE/TS gurus feel free to contradict me - I'd like to have 16-bit color in my terminal client!

Slightly off topic:

Citrix Metaframe has had 16 bit color support for some time, although it costs $$$. Metaframe is far superior to TS in features and performance - probably not applicable for using for home use, just FYI.

(Citrix was first, BTW - they licensed NT 3.51 from Microsoft for 10 years, and released Winframe Multi-User NT. Microsoft, always last to start, took note of this and how well it was selling and released TS - good for remote control, but useless for true ASP applications. ICA blows RDP away in performance.)

Just running Win XP Pro Beta 2 Pro here and wondering if a CE client has been identified to provide 16bit color.
Sound also works fine with Win98/Me/2k clients but can't figure how to configure it to work on the ePods, i.e. the client doesn't seem to have any such settings as far as I can tell.
The XP client install doesn't come with any CE versions

Hey Guys,

Sorry to burst any bubbles here but there will be NO terminal services for the epods that will support sound or 16-bit video. If you do a search this was explained already, but basically boils down to this: Although the Terminal SERVER is fully capable of supporting both, the CLIENT for the epods (or any CE 2.11 for that matter) cannot support it. The likelyhood of this being released to be "backward compatible" to this level of CE is unlikely since most devices that used this vintage of CE did not have hardware that could even provide this level of functionality. Those devices that did do not represent a large enough portion of the market to warrant writing a "new" client that would implement this.

I for one am dissapointed by this, and I work for Microsoft on the Whistler/XP developement team. But alas Microsoft is a business, and there really is not enough of us fanatics to justify the costs involved.

epodfrak - Since you're familiar with XP, is there a way to enable auto logon (w/out typing user/pass) on an XP desktop when "dialing in" from the RDP 5.1 client that comes with XP ?

I talked to one of the developers working on the TS client a month ago. They're working on a WinCE client that supports color and sound, but it's still a few months out. Likely but not certain that it'll run on WinCE 2.11--I made sure that their team picked up a couple of epods when they were cheap, so they'd be properly motivated to code for it. :)

Dish - I live in Woodinville. Just a hop skip and a jump from Redmond. Tell them I will buy them lunch if they code it for us.

If so, what happened to the RDP5.1 client for CE you were talking about?
This'd be a much simpler solution and less $$$) than installing WinXX server & citrix.

I don't know where Dish got his info from but one of the guys I used to work with (he moved from XP to CE) has seen my Epods on many occasions and although it's a nice thought, I can assure you that there will be NO CE client of RDP 5.1 that will work on the Epods. Sadly, it IS old technology now. I wish it were different but the epods has passed it's 'end of life' as far as software developement goes.

Ah well. Citrix it is.
Epodfreak... Will there be a CE 3.0 RDP5.1 client? I haven't totally given up hope on upgrading the OS, just yet.

itsvincer-

I'll look into it for CE 3.0 but my gut insticts tell me no. I mostly use my CF-01 for this reason. I've been told by my CE buddy that he could build a version for it, but since he really hasn't seen the insides of the Epods yet, I still remain skeptical. But you never know, he may just pull it out of his....,umm hat? one day and surprise the hell out of me.

Cool!
In them meantime, Citrix is pretty sweet, but it is plenty of extra work, and it means we can't upgrade our server to XP. :P
