what is the best wireless LAN card?
wireless lan

New Messagewhat is the best wireless LAN card? (modified 0 times) yodayoda
ok, i tried to post this earlier and all the Ws, Ns, and Ts turned into pound signs for some reason. anyways, i wanted to purchase a PCMCIA wireless NIC and wanted to figure out which was the best. i have been walking through the message board and the epodsfiles website, trying to decide which to buy, but can't make a clear descision. here are my criteria:

1) It must be easy to install--PnP if possible, very minimal registry modifications on the PC of the ePods.
2) It must be able to do DHCP.
3) It must have a good range.
4) It must not be too expensive.

1 and 2 are non-negotiable, it has to do those two. the latter two are less important, but of course i don't want a device that has a range of a foot (i would just keep my wired one) or is crazy-expensive. thanks!

Anyone have any input on this? This subject is of great interest to me as well, I would like to hear what those who have got it working have to say!

ok, how about people report which wireless LAN they own, how easy it was to install, whether DHCP works on it, and how much it costs? then i can take that and put a web page together as a permanent reference on that =)

Well, I can't say its the best, but I'm using the D-Link DWL-650 card in mine, as are a number of other folks.

I have to say that it was just about as PnP as you can get. I follwed the instructions included with the Prism driver linked to from the network tab of the http://www.geocities.com/epodsfiles web site.

This required the software to be installed via activesync, the card to be popped in, and the name of the network card driver to be typed into a dialog box. Its worked great from that point on, and I'm using it with the D-Link DWL-1000 Access Point. They are set to work on the same channel right out of the box.

The cost is about $125 for the card, I believe, and about $250 for the access point.

I have the same DLINK setup, paid $169 +$5 shipping ($199 - $30 coupon) at buy.com for the access point and $119 free shipping for PCMCIA card at Amazon.

However on my unhacked epod I get my DHCP address and can ping the epod, but the browser doesn't think I am online.

On my laptop everything works great!

If anyone would be willing to help I would greatly apreciate it.

if you are using IE4, did you go to internet options (in IE4) and check "Use LAN"

When I had my epods wireless, I was using a linksys access point (WAP11) and a d-link air (dwl-650) pcmcia card. The card was easy to install and worked fine with the intersil drivers. (though there is a problem with one of the files that it installs causing you not to be able to use the control panel on the epods).. After you move that file out of the windows directory, it worked fine. I've seen somewhere that you can move that file to the program directory and still use the d-link utility and the control panel at the same time but am not sure exactly which directory to put it in. anyhow, this setup worked great and looked 1000% better with TS running. I only had a couple of hours to play with this setup as it was not mine network.. I just wanted to see how well it would work to see if I wanted to make the investment in a wireless system. So far, I've purchased a linksys router (get rid of the software firewall and the software nat) just to get my network up to par. I've also bought a machine with the specific intention of running Windows 2000 Server. (none of mine were capable).. I have server installed and am waiting for $$ to buy the wireless setup. I will probably go with the setup I described above; however, I've also considered the SMC setup.

Someone can correct me if I'm wrong, but I don't believe that DHCP capability is a function of the network card itself. This functionality is actually set up in the operating system, where you select between specifying an IP address, or selecting the option where the computer will obtain an IP address.

So, any network card would be capable, I would think.

you are correct, as far as i know it should not be dependent on the card. but when i was reviewing the posts regarding these wireless LAN cards, often the comment "haven't got DHCP to work" appeared. i can't imagine why DHCP problems would be card-specific. this leads me to believe that DHCP does not work AT ALL with the v2.04 hack. i have another thread asking about DHCP and at my university library, and there I used the Linksys wired LAN card and it doesn't work properly (doesn't send a DHCP request proper and server won't issue it an IP).

I definitely do have DHCP working with the 2.04 hack.

Again, this is with the D-Link card.

I have a lucent technologies wavelan silver card running with an airport card in my G4 workstation, which is acting as a software router. The G4 is connected to my ethernet and a linksys router to the DSL modem.

The epods sees the internet just fine, reasonable speed, but cannot see the drives on my win2k machine. I think it's because the airport card is creating it's own network within a network and so the epods and win machines are not on the same net. I've tried all the tricks mentioned elswhere in this forum without any luck though...
