v2.04 hack does not seem to work...
Hack problems

Before I start, I know that this has been asked numerous times before, but I have read all the posts I could find, and tried everything I could find, but it hasn't worked...

I am a new ePodder (just got mine 2 days ago), and I am trying to install hack v2.04. I downloaded the .zip and moved the files to the ePods (using irDA, since I don't have a null modem cabble). I imported the registry, did a soft-reset, and got the white screen/broken links problem. I have re-imported the registry numerous times (after a hard-reset), tried the AstroSoft registery editor, redownloaded the hack, imported the registry multiple times before the soft-reset (using both registry editors), doing a stylus recalibration after the soft-reset... nothing has made a difference.

I haven't opened it up yet to determine the version of the system board, but would this make a difference (I seem to recall this being discussed in the past)? I also recall someone mentioning a problem regarding the CF and the v2.x hacks (I originally had a CF in the slot, so I removed it, and tried over a number of times, but no dice...), is this a problem? Any ideas?????

Thanks for any help people can give. It might be worth it if everyone who has had problems can chime in, so this info can be collected and added to one of the epods websites. On that note, I want to thank Randy for his wonderful website, as well as the owner of the epodssoftware website (don't know the owners name).

I knew I would forget something...

IF possible, could the v2.0x hacks creators list the registry entries changed to create the hack.

The version of your epods should make no difference to the effectiveness of the hack. Somehow you must be repeating the same error each time.
The only obvious places to go wrong are 1. To not copy all of the necessary files to all of the correct locations. or
2. To get the Hard resets/soft resets in the wrong order, as nhaver suggests.
The final order should be 1.download, copy files, import registry several times
2. Hard reset. (now you probably have the white screen broken links problem.
3. Import registry several times.
4. SOFT reset
For me, whenever I do a Hard reset I have the white screen problem and need to steps 3 and 4 again.
Good Luck.

RNasby,
I had the same problem after I performed the v2.04 hack. Here's how I fixed it. Perform a hard reset. Next time you turn the epods on, you'll be prompted to perform the stylus calibration. Do it. Next, your epods will probably open to a white screen with the Win CE task bar showing at the bottom. Click on the Start button (this may be a bit tricky because, believe it or not, your stylus/screen is still not calibrated, try touching the corners of the buttons). Tap the Programs menu, then tap the System menu. Tap on the Filestor icon. This should open an explorer window showing a Control Panel and a File Store icon. Double-tap the File Store icon. Double-tap into the \epods system folder, then double-tap into the \programs folder. Next, double-tap into the \Utilities folder. Now double-tap on the Tascal Reg Edit.exe icon. After the Tascal Registry Editor window opens, tap on the Registry menu and tap on Import Registry File... . The Open registry file window should open, use this to browse to the location you copied the V204REG file. Tap the V204REG file, then tap OK. After a few seconds, you should be prompted that the registry has been updated. Perform this V204REG import process three more times (yes, three times more, I don't know why but this seems to work). After the third import, close the Tascal Registy Editor window and any other remaining windows. Now perform a soft reset (insert stylus in small hole in back of epods while power is on). The epods should reset and open to a blue epods screen now. Lastly, tap the Start button again, tap Settings, then Control Panel, and perform another stylus calibration. Voila! You're now running a full Win CE 2.11 shell. Hope this helps.

a quick note: after the white screen, you can push the two silvers buttons in the upper left part of your ePods to bring up the mouse calibration. doesn't do the hack, but it makes the process a little bit nicer =)

Thanks everyone for the help. I am reluctant to admit the problem, because it is so stupid... I was not performing the soft-reset correctly. I was pushing the reset button in the back when the unit was off. I SWEAR this is how it is done on my Palmtop. I really not this stupid...

Anyway, thanks again. I now have the desktop, icons, etc. I have only had it up for about 15 seconds as I write this, but already so much cooler.

And if the 'hackers' who created the v2.04 hack would like to document the keys changed, that would be great.

RNasby: Don't feel bad... for some devices waht you were doing IS a soft reset. Maybe the instructions for 2.04 could be rewritten to include this (or maybe this will be included in v. 2.05? :)
