Ya, you should feel guilty. I'm probably the sucker who bought it from you. Ebay can get me in so much trouble. I missed the "craze" by 2 weeks - $250 to $400 in that time. I had been checking Ebay in December and found nothing and then stumbled on them late last week. Oh bloody hell.

I don't know why so many people rag on eBay -- everyone portrays the sellers as greedy moneymakers -- and I agree SOME are uninformed ignorant greedy bastids, but most of the buyers are willing to pay more to get exactly what they are looking for. Now that eBay has so many listings I have rarely seen lots of running up of bids by "one up bidding each other" on popular items because there is 10-15 of the same thing auctioning at any one time.

On all these items -- WebSurfer, i-opener, WebPlayer -- there's a big bubble in ebay auction prices when the original source dries up. Panicked folk want to get on the bandwagon and pay a 100% premium 'cause they think there's no tomorrow.

A few months later, the original hackers get bored with their toys, hoarders with no time to hack decide to get real and bail out. The price falls once the desperate get their machines or lose interest.

Last hacked epod on ebay sold for $429. Last virgin epod for $379.
I'm continually bidding with a firm maximum in my head and a long-term view. I predict I'll reply to this post in 60 days with figures like $300 and $220.

I found my ePod at a clearance house new in the box. It was marked at $100, with a 50% off sticker - so I paid $50 for mine. I was shaking like a four-year-old on Christmas morning!

Yow! Clearance where? If it was at a chain store, there might be one in my area worth rummaging through...

That was the first thing I thought of, so I checked and there are only two stores, not a chain - sorry. I have been checking back with them frequently and no more have come in, so I think it was a fluke.

Speaking of Ebay...

I have an extra ePods that I don't think I will end up using. It has a rev 1.2 board and I have upgraded the RAM to 32MB. Any ideas what this might fetch on Ebay with the extra memory and the CE shell already installed?

epoder - I was not bashing Ebay - it was personal comment about myself. Unfortunely I fall into the catagory that NormConquest described as "Panicked folk want to get on the bandwagon and pay a 100% premium 'cause they think there's no tomorrow." Supply and demand. The Ebay price simply reflectes what the current market will bear. I panicked.

I was thinking about selling my Epod but have never dealt with Ebay. Can you tell me how you do your transactions. Do you use that escrow service to make sure you get payment? I've read various info on their site but really am a newbie when it comes to ebay. Any help would be appreciated.

I was thinking about selling this as well but....as a matter of fact, I've fallen in love with this baby. And...no way, I'm not gonna be greedy to just hand it away for a profit of $100-200.

I love my Pods

For thos who sell this on Ebay, I don't see any problem with that as long as there are people who want to shell out their money for it. There will another year 'til people come up with something better and, of course, cheaper.

duvell,

how much would *you* want for it? how much would *you* expect to get for it.

If you're interested in selling it direct (for a profit) and not going through the eBay shuffle, let me know and we can take this offline.

New MessageReally good deal on an ePods in the next few hours on eBay (modified 0 times) Pat+The+Hack
Some dumb seller whacked his HTML on eBay and blocked his bidding, so there's little competition for this one and it's still under $300...

If you can "hack" his html or if you use AWeb on your Amiga, you can bid too...

I'm one of the people that has bought into
the craze and paid double on ebay. Figure
it's still cheaper than anything else.

I've wanted some sort of web pad to play
with since I've worked on them at SGI
3 1/2 years ago.

Even if it does have a cheap screen and
run CE. Even at double it's cheap.

I have a mobile pro 770 also form my
ex-job. That is roughly the same amount
of hardware and they sold for $800 new.

The larger pad form factor is much more
interesting than the original CE clamshell.

The $200 price is way under epods burdened
cost to produce them. They probably paid
$400 or so each to have them built.

So to coin an old phrase "It's a bargain
at twice the price".

I agree, eBay isn't just a place to sell things or buy overpriced "toys", but its cool to be able to buy something play around with it and sell it back on there if you get tired of it (like the epods/iopener/etc.) there is always something waiting to experiment with it.

Still waiting on help with ebay (see post above). Anyone got any suggestions?

New MessageRE:I sold my Epods on Ebay for almost $400, and suddenly feel guilty. (modified 0 times) Pat+the+Hack
YMMV, but when I've sold on eBay, I never use an escrow service. I personally accept, certified funds in the form of cashier's check or money order or credit card thru PayPal (see http://www.paypal.com for more info here) and ship right away for these, I also accept personal/company checks and, if over $50, wait for them to clear before shipping (under $50, I just cash the check and ship).

Your problem, if you are a complete eBay newbie (i.e. zero feedback), is you might have some trouble getting folks to cut loose with a few hundred bucks on your elooks alone, so you might need to at least offer escrow (costs money, though).

Thanks for the reply. What is YMMV? YOU MAKE ME VOMIT? :) I understand what you mean by no feedback. I guess I'm surprised people are that trusting even with feedback. What's there to stop you from taking their funds and either not shipping or shipping a broken piece of ####? By the way I know this isn't a for sale forum but if someone here would like a crack at it before I go ebaying let me know. str1der@home.com

Hee hee. YMMV = "Your Mileage May Vary". A simple disclaimer. But your interpretation is much funnier (except maybe to Pat)!

Also, you should note that the ePod frenzy on eBay is dying back down. At least 70 have been sold there in the past month, and there are plenty still for sale. So while you can likely get back your initial investment, I wouldn't expect to retire on the profits...
