AOL for ePods (almost)....

New MessageAOL for ePods (almost).... (modified 0 times) kc5vcx
I had high hopes of logging on and posting that AOL had just released its beta version of AOL for WinCE 2.0. (This is the semi-full version offering true internet access, including AOL mail, AOL IMs, and use of IE and any others internet apps) This version has been out for the Pocket PC and has worked great, unfortunately, I haven't had the same luck with the ePods yet.

The specs say for WinCE 2.11 and above. So I downloaded it and proceeded with the installation proceedure. I have a couple extenuating circumstances that possibly conflicted, but I thought I worked around them. I just recently replaced my atadisk.dll with the old one allowing me to use dual Storage Cards, however it renames whichever is insterted 2nd to Storage Card2. When I installed AOL through the Activesync it asked where I wanted to put it and I said storage card, forgetting that at the time it was in my PC Card slot (where my modem would have to plug in to be able to dial up). Then I figured, I'll just copy the files over, and its best for it to be on the one called Storage Card so any links to the program wouldn't be conflicted with Storage Card 2. So the app installed, I copied the files over from one storage card to the other, and did a soft reset as requested. I tried running AOL and it says "Cannot find AOL or one of its components" (even though I'm running the actual .exe not just a link that could be wrong). So I figured I'd try the whole process over again and make sure I arranged my storage card situation appropriately before hand. Come to find out, I can no longer run PC Link. The unit freezes before it even pops up the little connection window. I attempted to copy the dll files to use Activesync in the first place in case maybe AOL screwd them up, but still no luck.

Anybody have any suggestions? I'm running Version 1 of the hack, but I haven't had a chance to do a hard reset and start over from scratch yet.

Also, along similar lines, is there any way at all to remove programs after they've been installed? I unsuccessfully tried the unload files, but it was just jibberish to me. I guess maybe I need to experiment and find what I like then hard reset and get it the way I want. Otherwise it seems like I'm wasting precious memory space for old apps I can't get rid of.

On another quick tanget, maybe its just my unit, but it does seem fairly buggy. Is that just due to the nature of the hack? And possibly memory issues? Does Version 2 clear this up and make it a little better?

Thanks for any help...

why don't you get rid of AOHELL?

well, for one, did you try doing the full v2.04 hack? yeah, there is the "point of no return" concern, but if found the instructions very descriptive and easy to follow. i never even played with version 1, but i find version 2 to be very stable. i'm having a problem with DHCP on at university, but aside from that works great. i recommend going to v2.04 (and dumping AOL, but that's another matter)

I do plan to eventually go for Version 2 of the hack, as of this point though I just haven't had time, and in a safe way I wanted to see what my new ePod could do.

As for AOL, I'm stuck with it at the time, and there's nothing I can do. I'm fine accessing the internet through the network, but it'd also be nice to use AOL for dial up.

Any other ideas than just not messing with it?
