Using different wireless cards and acces point

New MessageUsing different wireless cards and acces point (modified 0 times) lentunti
Is it possible to use different brands of wireless card and access point.
For example, could I use a Buffalo access point with a Linksys PCMCIA card.

Thanks
Len

In most cases yes, if they're all 802.11b compliant.

I currently have an Apple Airport Base Station, two Lucent/Orinoco Silver cards (one purchased, one ripped from an Airport Base Station), and a Buffalotech card. They all seem to work fine togther. I use a Lucent card in the ePods, partly because they're the only one with CE drivers of the cards I have. The Buffalotech software is a bit strange, but it may be because I'm used to the Lucent drivers.

Anyone know where I'd be able to find CE or Mac drivers for the Buffalotech/Melco Wireless cards?

All the 802.11b cards should work together, there is WiFi certification http://www.wi-fi.net/ that some cards have to guarantee compatability. However, even with WiFi, not all cards support the same levels of encryption so if you plan on encrypting, you might want to look into the specifics of the hardware you want to use.

Little Bean Curd - Were you able to set up the Lucent card in the ePods to link to the AirPort with WEP enabled? Playing with a Farallon card and the generic Intersil drivers, I found I had to keep encryption off on the Airport to connect. With the recent drop in Orinoco prices, I was thinking about picking one up to try in the ePods.

ACTUALLY, to my knowledge, you're are ONLY able to use WEB encryption if using a PC client with an Airport Base Station. What happens is that when you turn on WEP Encryption, you can get a "Network Equivalent Password" thingie. This is the HEx code you put into the encryption key part of the Orinoco software.

On the older software or the desktop versions (sometimes,) you must precede the Network Equivalent Password with a 0x, as in zero-X. I think this holds true to ALL Windows whatever clients that want to use an Apple Airport network.

Actually, Ive gotten 2 laptops in ad hoc mode to communicate with encryption on and entering my own 10 digit encryption code using Dell 4800LT cards. Ihave only been able to get an aironet to talk to them from an epod with encryption OFF. There is no place in the aironet utility for CE to add an encryption code :o(...but I did get the aironet to talk to the dell 4800lt cards w/o encryption. Guess that'll have to do for now !

Hi little bean curd,

Just about to pull an airport card from my iMac and try it in the ePod - can you give any advice ??

Do I need to upgrade the card firmware ??

Where do I get the CE drivers from ? and which file exactly do I copy to where in my ePod -(the ORiNOCO web site download page is a little obtuse to me at the moment !).

Any help would really be appreciated..

I just want to chip in on the wireless area with a little note. You can do very well without an expensive base station for your home wireless network, in ad-hoc mode as mentioned by someone else here.
The hardware base station can be replaced by a computer running a routable OS (Linux - possibly NT). I've been using Cisco's Aironet (340 range) - one PCI card for the linux server and a PCMCIA in my laptop (soon also my epods).

Latest rumors indicates that Cisco is going to launch a cheaper base station which may prove more efficient than dealing with setting up ad-hoc yourself.

Best regards from Norway,
Ørjan Sandland

Couch- the airport cards that are sold for the iMacs will not work with any other device- these lack antennaes, which are built in to the current crop of iMacs, iBooks, Ti Powerbook, and G4s.

Just FYI...
