I picked up a used dell 4800lt wireless networking card on ebay, and although I got it to work in my laptop and am able to talk to my pod (which has a wavelan silver in it), I'm not hugely enthused. This card is definitely most happy talking to *other* 4800lt's. Since I've got a variety of cards in my setup (nokia 2mb cards + wavelan 11mb), I'm thinking that I'm not going to keep it. I paid $95 with shipping for it. Probably too much, but at least it arrived in a crushed box with no padding, and the driver CD rattling loose without a box. Sigh.
Anyway, I *was* able to get it working, by disabling WEP completely. (This, of course, required about 4 hours of scouring the net and eventually finding updated firmware -- without that, you can't even turn off WEP! arrrgggg....) I tried and tried, but I was unable to get it to talk to the wavelans with WEP enabled. The good news was that I was able to get it to talk to my 2mb nokia in my beater PC as well as my wavelan in my pod, but I think this is pushing it a bit.
It should be noted that all of this tinkering is in AD HOC mode (peer-to-peer).
Do CE drivers exist for this thing? Would I be better off stuffing it in my pod, and saving my wavelan for my server/proxy machine?
Do any of you have a 4800lt network setup at home? You'll probably be happier with the card than I will. I'll be happy to entertain offers or suggestions.
