MAME for ePods - What's the scoop? Run out of steam?

New MessageMAME for ePods - What's the scoop? Run out of steam? (modified 0 times) PodPeople
Has the project to port MAME to ePods been dropped? I'd be happy to lend support to whomever is/was working on this in the form of an ePod, if that will move it along. This would have to qualify as one of the coolest hacks for the ePod, imho.

Leads to another question - screen resolutions and scaling. Does anyone know if the unit can be put into the funky handheld pc video modes?

Some games run in Palm PC video mode and they only appear in the upper left hand section of the screen.

And yes, I want to keep this at the top, what about MAME? I love watching the little demos, but playing would be much better! I don't think adding KB would be that hard, but don't actually know. Who has taken this over?

Here is the website:

http://www.geocities.com/dgfinck/

(10FEB01) Someone (who owns an ePod) has expressed interest in taking over MAMECE for the ePod. With some luck, he'll be under way soon and perhaps even create a webpage one day.
(28JAN01) Progress continues on the ePod build. See this page for the latest info. *UPDATE* Test build #2 now available. Galaga works, screen is centered, and front-end options are visable. Sound doesn't work, still no working inputs.
WANTED: ePod owner to take over project (or a cheap ePod for me :) Must have MSVC++6.0 & Windows CE Toolkit and at least enough knowledge to compile the thing. Apply within.

Anybody know who talked to this guy and 'expressed interest'?

I've been outta town interviewing all week, so I didn't catch this tread till just now...

I'm the somebody that offered to take over the port. 'Course, shortly after making the offer, life decided to hit me upside the head with a rather large hammer - I do have every intent on taking over the port, I'm just temporarily very, VERY pressed for time...

However, this Friday the dense fog that is school will temporarily lift, allowing me to actually *do* something again. I'm hoping to have a basic website up by next Friday, along with a progress plan...

Beyond just getting the blasted thing to work, my most ferverant desires for the ePod port o'MAME (how does MAMEpod sound?) is to work on an onscreen controller. I'm pretty new to CE programming and to MAME itself, though, so you'll have to humor me for a bit...

Any other suggestions?

Hey, I can provide a website and help with it some. I am new to CE as well, but I want to learn. I could not do it myself, but I may be able to help.

Phew... finally, I've got a (very small) window of time free to work on MAME. I've started playing with dgfinck's source, and am working to get it to compile (I spent 3+ hours trying to get it to compile w/Embedded VC, till I finally realized it wants me to use VC6... doh). Hopefully, I'll get this up and running by the end of the day, and can *finally* start making some progress.
Is anyone else interested in getting a hold of the source tree for the epod port? Getting a website up is pretty low on my priority list till I get some functionality beyond what dgfinck was able to do, but if someone else wants to play with the source I'll be a tad more proactive about it.

p.s. Sorry for the message fragement above - While aiming for the scrollbar, I accidentally hit "Reply". Ugh...

Hey, C=64
I'd be interested in assisting.
I can get a web page set up.
I'd also be interested in possibly helping with code, but have no CE experience and none with emulators either. (I do know C/C++).

Let me know if you want any help with making a page or anything else.

I've been out of the Epods loop for a few weeks, glads to see someone attacking the Mame project.
Feel free to copy the screenshot pictures on my site to use on a MAMePods site.
It's at http://tornado.dnsq.org/epods.htm
Let me know if I can help.

New MessageRE:MAME for ePods - What's the scoop? Run out of steam? (modified 0 times) C=64
SiliconIce - I'll get you the source soon as I can. I'm currently cleaning it up in an attempt to get it to run with MS's freely available Embedded Visual C so all the less fortunate souls that don't own Visual C can still much around with it.

I've also started doing some initial research on a virtual gamepad. I've been looking around for any information on whether it's possible to detect multiple simulteneous "touches" on a screen, but I'm not finding much useful info, and the newsgroups are being less the helpful as well. Sigh...

HOWEVER, I'm about to start playing with some undocumented API calls to try and take over the 4 available buttons - while it may not be feasible to have a completely virtualized gamepad, a direction pad may work out alright. And if that's the case, if I remap the display to render it horizontally instead of vertically (so you hold the epod like you would a sheet of paper), the buttons are reachable and feel comfortable enough in my hands for gaming. So, the hope for a completely self-contained gaming enviroment lives on!

Sigh... now to get back to work. I don't suppose any of you wants to write a mark-and-sweep garbage collector for a microscheme implementation for me, do you? :)

Ok, what am I missing? I downloaded build 2, put it and a few roms onto my pod, ran the app (and saw my roms listed), but none of them will play, or even display at all?!?

I copied over pacman, mspacman, galaxian, and dkong, if it matters.

Well I was able to get MsPacman to display once, but that's it. And I wasn't able to kill the app, either. I had to soft reset.

MS PacMan, Galaga, and Donkey Kong all work for me!
No sound or input, but the display is fine and you can watch the demos.

The virtual gamepad that I implemented in PocketSNES allows multiple buttons to be assigned to a particular area of the screen. So, you can create two buttons side by side and assign the area in between them to be both pressed.
It seems to work well.

have you decided if you will try to port PocketSNES over to the ePods yet?

It would be truly impressive to have even a halfway decent snes emulator on this thing. Hell, there are only two decent x86 snes emulators and they even have significant problems. Personally, I'd be happy with an Atari 2600 emulator w/ a virtual flywheel so I could play Circus and Kaboom. What exactly is the playable status of your emulator now anyway? Someone could make a "game status" doohickey for your site that could be updated by users. I would offer to, but I'm off to Indiana for a couple days. Good luck!

I would be crazy over a decent NES emulator as well.
PunchOut, Mario Bros 1, 2, 3...Tetris, Paperboy, lots of others that don't take a lot of computing power but are fun.

Ugh... Word of advice - trying to code and debug with Active Sync via the serial port is a bad, bad idea... I have to sit 2-4 minutes between each compile, waiting for the application to transfer across the wire. And god help me if I hit a break point and try stepping through! I've *got* to get a network card for this thing...

You may have already done so, but setup a 115k connection under remnet, and make sure your activesync client is working at max speed.

New MessageRE:MAME for ePods - What's the scoop? Run out of steam? (modified 0 times) zhensel
I guess this has probably been discussed in another thread, but I can't find it by searching... how exactly should I configure a remnet connection to work at 115k? I've tried, but when I set it up as the default connection with the comm. control panel applet all I get is failed connection attempts with pclink. Can anyone whip up a quick how-to (or point me to the most-likely existing thread that I couldn't find)?

More on-topic: I'm trying to find a cheap USB keyboard so that I can turn it into an epods game controller (for palmgb, mame, snes, etc). Anyone know where I can get one, preferably for <$5? I plan on cutting it down to size and trying to jam a few keys into a six button sega controller (that ought to be enough - same amount of buttons as snes). It would be small enough to roll up and stick in my pocket or something when not in use. The only problem is that I'll have to buy another sega controller for my atari 2600 (if you are still using the atari joysticks, I highly recommend buying a sega controller and just plugging it in).

re: 115k remnet activesync connection

i think somepne was working on a faq; this wpuld be an ideal inclusion.

open remnet, create a direct connection using serial port. call it something like "Desktop @ 115k"

then use the control panel©ommunications properties\pc connections tab to select the newly created connection type.

make sure your desktops com port is set for 115k, and you're done.
