To do what? It's a modem and an LCD screen.

At best, you could reverse engineer the protocol, write your own picture server, and change the phone number to dial up your server instead of theirs. it most likely does not run on CE or other "useful" operating systems.

The Cieva is runs PSOS+ for a RTOS on a Cirrus Logic ARM processor.

Here is a article about it:

Someone will need to buy one and open it up to see if it can be hacked. I use PSOS at work but I don't have the licenses to work with ARM processors.

A friend of mine has a Ceiva and since it lacks a touchpanel and doesn't have any hardware ports except the modem I don't think it'd be of much use.

I don't know what you'd do with a non-portable, non-battery backed up device that doesn't have a touchscreen even if you could hack it. Maybe use it as a Linux server? For ASCII games?

If it has a TOS, it would be nice to get around that by getting it to dial a different number. If you could cotrol what it showed and when, then it could also display news items, calender reminders, etc. Right now you have to submit pics to it and then it just scrolls through them. If content could be generated dynamically and sent to the frame to be displayed it could act as a picture frame for a portion of the day, break in with news briefs, announce new e-mail messages and display daily appointments first thing in the morning. Sure, a hacked webplayer can do all that and more, but for people who have signifficant others who don't like a PC in every room, the small picture frame concept is nice and unobtrusive. Just my thoughts.

Well, if you could figure out the protocol, you might be able to just hook it straight to another modem on a pc, then simulate the ceiva server side? This could be an interesting application!

profeign: Is there any chance of getting some board scans of your friend's Cieva? It might shed some light on if it is hackable.
