Novatel Wireless Merlin CDPD Modem. Bummer, not working.

New MessageNovatel Wireless Merlin CDPD Modem. Bummer, not working. (modified 0 times) PodPeople
By any chance, has anyone tried to make a Novatel Wireless Merlin CDPD modem work w/ their ePods? I can install the software, and launch the configuration app, but as soon as it tries to talk to the modem, it hangs.

I can configure it w/o the config manager on a laptop, for instance, but again, as soon as you try to do anything with it under 'network' or dialup, it hangs.

My first thoughts are: a) driver incompatible, and b) missing system files.

Any ideas are appreciated!!!

I had this combination working, but I don't think I had to do anything special. I have since sold the Merlin card, so I can't try it out again. But, just so you know, it definately works.

Chuckdotcom:

Were you able to run the configuration program, or did you configure it manually? Did you install into main memory, or onto a CF card?

I'm running the full 2.04 modification, but stock memory, and no memory card.

The device driver does not show up in the "Network" properties, but when I try to create a new Dial-up object, it does show up as "Merlin" under possible ports. Is there a way to check the properties of devices, similar to the System/Device Manager in Windows 9x?

I can also talk to the merlin "modem" via AT commands in the terminal window when manually configuring a new dial-up object. I'll need to crank out an instruction list to see if everything is as it should be.

The instructions for manual installation indicate putting just 't' in the numbers field for dial-up. I understand this is simply an "dial" command, but i'm unclear about what it exactly dials? a special pop number it has prestored for CDPD?

I use the Merlin card with my ePods no problem -- I don't do it often though because web browsing is just too painfully slow...When I get home I can check to see if I did anything special to set it up. I don't recall having to do anything special though, so I'm not sure I'll be much help. Feel free to email me if you have any questions (adam_kelley@hotmail.com)

I realize that you are using the novatel, but I have been succesful getting my Mitsubisi t250 to work with my ePod. The trick was to disable "auto-sync when a serial cable is attached" in control panel->communictions, and setting "manual dial" in the remnet profile. These may be different for you, since I'm connecting using the serial port.

Thanks for all the replies. So far, nothing has changed. The connection manager still locks up when you try to configure the modem, and maually dialing just creates retry after retry and eventual failure.

I have installed the 2.0/2.11 dll/ole files, thinking this might make a difference.

One thing I need to ask the gentleman that has/had it working.. Are you using Ricochet service, or CDPD?

Thanks for any leads. Next stop is tech support w/ novatel *shudder*.

I had it working with CDPD service from Verizon. I really think all I had to do was download the driver from Novatel and install it. I don't remember doing anything else. I may have needed a MFC dll to get the little app that it comes with to work. Sorry I can't help you out. If you have any specific questions, you can contact me at chukdotcom@yahoo.com. Good Luck.

OMG, it works.

I'm guessing CE doesn't disconnect net services and pickup new ones as gracefully as, say, Win2k. I believe the problem was that once a netowrk connection of any kind has been previously established, it doesn;t want to play with the modem. a reboot or two, and the damn thing works. still had to configure through the laptop, but hey, no biggie.

And the verdict is: totally unusable for anything other than text. If you need wireless internet, get Ricochet.

the utilities all work fine now too. must have been me.

yellow1: tried it, but it wouldn't make the connection manually. it doesn't actually dial a number, it requests attention from the cellular network, similar to the process a cellphone uses when you turn it on. (or so they tell me)
