Screen Protection
Protecting the screen surface

Just an FYI for whoever is interested. Did a little testing, and you can put a thick piece of plastic on top of this screen and it does not effect the pen's functionality in the least. If you look at the left/right/bottom edges of the screen you'll note a little ledge where the case meets the screen. A plastic sheet that's level with the top of this ledge (approx 1/16") will protect the screen and still let everything function. Of course there's the question of securing it cleanly and if the screen needs protection, but I know the Stylistic 500 manufacturer's instructions state that screen must have protection to guard against possible damage. Not that anyone's worrying about a warranty or anything.

Also note you can wave the pen around about an inch off the screen and the mouse will still follow it. So if you really wanted I suppose you could put a 1" thick protective plastic cover over it...

Just a quick thought that came to me while reading Greenspark's post... One of my units came with a screen protector attached. I just picked them up a bit ago and haven't had time to investigate it. The protector is not as large as the screen (may be homemade or for another appliance or even that size orginally sold for the 1200) At any rate it is stuck down with something. It is obvious that the medium is around the edges but I don't know if it is used on the whole protector.

Because there is a considerable area around the viewable screen like a little frame, how about cutting a protector from something like protector pages, transparency medium, etc... as discussed in other threads, and then attaching it with some kind of non-damaging sticky substance around the edges. First thing that comes to mind is the glue that you can get for "make your own post-it notes" or even very thin double side removable, clear tape. I have some tape that is double sided, reposistional, used for mounting paper on walls without damaging the walls. It is just sticky enough but easily removable. I know it comes in little squares but not sure if it comes in rolls.

Wish I could do more playing with all my toys so I could add more info but still have pinched nerve in neck so have to do most of my work in semi-reclined position. (With me now, on a twin bed are 2 1200's, 1 Webplayer, 1 Dell Notebook, 1 CF-01 in dock with mucho peripheral hanging off (on a lap board), another large lap board (using now with Notebook), several laptop hardrives, two pcmcia sound cards in boxes, 1 external usb slim laptop harddrive in box, box of assorted cables and stuff, 1 set of external Notebook speakers (loose), 2 surge protector power strips, several cd's in cases, a couple of computer magazines, remote for Dishplayers, several orthopedic and regular pillows, an ashtray (bad girl), and my magic orange nubby ball that I roll around on my neck. And you ask if I am a geek girl????

You might want to look at this PocketPC page:

http://www.pocketpcpassion.com/General/ScreenProtector/ScreenProtector.htm

They have a long investigation on what works as a screen protector using common office supplys. While this is aimed at pocketpc's it is all applicable to the 1200 since the screen on the 1200 is actually tougher than the pocketpc's resistance based touch screen.

PS. GeekGranny you sound like a girl after my own heart. I wish I could spend some time in bed surrounded by all my computer toys. Of course without the pinched nerve, ouch.

Discovered that screen protector that came on one of my 1200's is stuck on all surface but removes very easily. When I first visited probably the site you listed tcbordp , and any others I could find, I went out and purchased every possible product. Haven't applied any of them. One of the things I have done to protect screens is to purchase several different types of Styli. Each screen seems to have a "preference". Also I'm not doing any scribbling on any of them yet.

Remembering some of the pointers for successful protection... Make sure all dust/particles are removed from surfaces, work in a dust free environment, take your time. Someone on this board suggested doing the application in a steamy bathroom as the steam "traps" the dust.

Neck is getting better but I'm stretching it out as long as I can so I can play more. When I had a king size bed in here, before MBedroom converted to my Office/workshop the bed situation got really out of hand. I always left a 24" area for me. Sure am glad Hubby doesn't have the addiction but do wish he would be a little more involved. He just wants and likes the results....not the path. Think most of us are in that boat.

BTW.... With all the heavy work I do around here (guy stuff) wouldn't you know that I hurt my neck working on the inside of the damn dishwasher!!!!!!!!

I'm finding the "bare" screen surface is pretty tough. The unit I have looks brand new, and the only scratches on it are the little ones near the drive door when I tried to get that sucker off the first time. I'm going to run out and get a few things, but I think a thin sheet of hard plastic should be the best choice. Will report back.

Oh, and Granny, here's a tip to avoid dishwasher injuries: Don't turn it on while you're still inside of it. That spinning thing at that bottom can really whack you a good one.
