Fujitsu Point 510 Interest
Trying to determine if there is enough interest to get a group going specifically on hacking the Fujitsu Point 510

I just ordered a Fujitsu Point 510 off of ebay. It seems like a very useful device for the money and I was wondering if there were any others out there interested in hacking these devices. They seem to be pretty popular on Ebay. In fact, I have found a place with a bunch to sell and if anyone is interested we could make a bulk purchase and negotiate a good price.

I'm interested too. By the way, does anyone now how much better this is from the Stylistic 1200? I believe the screen is a little larger but I'm not sure about the weight.

I have one of these. They are gerat because they are a fully functional pc. I have an ebook reader on it and outlook for my schedule. The battery gets about 3 1/2 hours per charge. I have office loaded but use it very little because I find on screen keyboard to be cumbersome. When I'm home I use my 802.11b for wireless surfing. This thing is great. I'm selling one on the swapmeet so check it out.

Mine should be in the mail. I sold ( am selling on ebay ) my epods one and
bought the 510. I may go to the 2300 eventually, but I wanted to try this out
first. The 640x480 on the epod one was too limiting. Hopefully this will run
Terminal Services and use my 802.11b wireless card as good as the epod one did.
If I can surf the net and use terminal services wirelessly, life will be good. ;)

Does anyone know how you go about trying to set a new discussion group formed on this site? I wasn't able to find anything. I think that there could be enough interest in this. BTW, does anyone have any photos of the guts of the 510? If not, I may take mine apart and do some research.

I might go for one of these. Is there an info page for this at Fujitsu's site?

Fujitsu has a FAQ for them. Maybe some other info/links around there too...

http://www.fujitsupc.com/www/support.shtml?support/faq/pentabs/pt510

There is supposed to be a Fujitsu supplied ( don't know how much it cost )
win98 PEN drivers for the 510. I'd like to have mine running win98 if possible.

How well does this play mp3s ? I'm already having a hard time streaming mp3s over 802.11b from my 1200 without the occasional hiccup...
It seems much thinner and lighter than the 1200. Is it a 800x600 ?

Anyone willing to post a review of the 510? Can someone with both the 510 and 1200 comment on both of these? If the 510 is at 100MHz and the 1200 at 120MHz, is the point 510 any faster? I'd definitely be interested if you guys can get better deals than on ebay.

Here's some random thoughts on the 1200 vs the 510.

Screen: 510 is bigger (~10" vs ~8")

Resolution: 510 is 800x600, 1200 is 640x480

Colors: 510 specs state 256. 1200 supports 4096. This is a big one for me.

Touch screen: 510 allows a passive pen (or your finger) - resistive. 1200 requires special pen - electromag

Processor: The 1200 has a Pentium 120, the 510 has an AMD 586, which is a glorified 486.

Onboard Memory: 1200 comes with 16MB, 510 with 8MB, both are expandable, 510 uses 72-pin SIMMS, 1200 uses 144-pin DIMMS

Weight: Similar weights, think the 1200 is a little heavier

Size: Similar sizes, 510 is about .2" thinner, and a little wider, but it fits a bigger screen in approximately the same space.

Ports onboard: Both have keyboard, IR, mike, headphone, serial. 510 also has mouse. 1200 also has printer and VGA. No USB support on the 510, not even with an expansion dock. A USB port is included on the 1200's dock and one can (and has been) hacked into the 1200 as detailed in other threads here.

If there's another Point model with a slightly more powerful pentium-class processor I'll go for it.

The price these things are going for on eBay are a little high for me at the moment.

More precise info according to this site:

Weight
510: 3.8 lbs.
1200: 3.9 lbs.

Size
510: 11.7 x 8.7 x 1.4 inches
1200: 11.1 x 7.4 x 1.6 inches

These differences seem negligible to me.

As far as 510 -vs- 1200 goes....

I went the 510 route for the cost ( $150 ) and the 800x600 display.
I had a epods one and it is a great little device.... but I just can't
live with 640x480. I may eventually go to the 2300 because it also
does 800x600.... but it's 3 - 4 times the cost. I wanted try out
the cheaper route to 800x600 first.

check out the new thread if you are interested in a group buy of the Point 510s. the wholeseller is asking 85, so it would be like ~95 shipped. That is at least 50-60 dollars off Ebay prices! 1/3 off the going Ebay as well, YEY

Well, should there be a separate board for the 510 (and the 2300, LT, etc. when they start becoming available?), or should we rename this one to "Fujitsu Pen Tablets" or similar? (Who will be the first to try an AMD133, or swap the chip from the 1200?) Anyway, for those concerned about the Chips & Tech 65548, 98SE runs it at 16 bit. I tried the portrait mode beta that C&T put out for the 65550 (before Intel) http://www.asiliant.com/driver.htm; it seems to work OK, and adds a gamma correction, but not portrait.
