If you guys are really interested in the 510 than I will remind you about www.uce.com. There is a guy selling there for $85 each but you must purchased at least 20. Now don't bother to ask him about a smaller order because I tried that already and he is not interested so please don't.
Good luck.

keggers: Have you asked about the condition of the 510's? Are they in good shape? Do they have deep scratches, missing doors, missing power supplies, etc.? Do they come with a stylus?

The ubid ad is very cryptic. These are likely coming off-lease and the condition of the machines can vary greatly depending on who was using them. If the machines were lightly used in an office setting then they probably will be OK. If they were used in a warehouse or factory floor the story may be dramatically different.

I'm interested in the group buy, but only if the machines are in good shape. See if you can get the seller to guarantee the condition. Most dealers will guarantee everything except for the battery. If the seller won't make any guarantees then there is a reasonable chance that the machines are rough. Another possibility is that he just doesn't want to make an effort to stand behind his merchandise. Either way, we may be better off spending $30-50 more and getting machines that are warranted to be decent.

I've bought beat-up machines in the past due to not asking enough question up front. I'm trying not to make that mistake again.

I emailed the guy selling them I think Friday night or Saturday, so I probably won't get a response till tomorrow (tuesday) if the guy only checks his email at work, I asked if it had the syli, condition of screen, where they were last used, etc. I will post his reply on this thread.
Also i am probably the one that will be taking care of this deal unless anyone else wants to take the reigns. Another vague idea is we can pool to buy any extra we need to make 20 then resell them on Ebay and split the profits, or you buy 1 or 2 more than your own to sell yourself, whichever, jsut an idea...

Thanks for the info, he might prove hard to reach...one of my friends tried to buy a Stylistic 1200 from him last summer and was only able to make contact with him once for 15 seconds...One reason might have been that he'd run out of 1200s so wasn't to interested in his questions !

I thought it only had once PCMCIA slot and he doesn't mention any OS, not necessarily a problem but are drivers available ?

Finally, I got a response from the seller:
"Yes they do have some scuffs and scratches from previous pen use but are very
readable and clear color. They did not come back off lease with the stylises,
but you can use anything, even a Bic pen. We have sold hundreds of these.
Thank you"

For $85 dollars, I still believe this is a good deal even without the stylus. And with regard to software, since there are already many people on this board with these we can get pen services and the drivers necessary easily enough, and hopefully no one here has a problem with having to install an operating system. Also, I already have an idea of what software and things i will be using and will pass any of them on to the BBS.
I am not sure about the PCMCIA slot issue, look in the other threads here for the Point 510 specs, because these are going to be the same, Fujitsu did not make any major revisions to the model that I know of.

Has anyone thought of how to get the drivers for the PCMCIA card onto the 510?

I imagine this may be a problem for any of us that purchase the 510.

I'm not too familiar with the product, just found out about it last night - looks cool. I just want to make sure I don't end up with 3 of these bad boys and not be able to use them on the network because I can't get a driver for the PCMCIA card on it.

I want to connect to the internet through a wireless home network.

Thanks.

I have emailed about the power supply, awaiting reply.
Some thoughts about connectivity:
With OS installed:
-The simplest thing to do in this case is to use Windows serial communications with the COM port to your computer, copy over drivers for a PCMCIA card or copy .CABs to upgrade the OS or whatever.
-If you have a laptop, a friend with a laptop, access to a laptop, or a computer with an infrared port you can send drivers/CABs via the IrDA port.
-If you have a PCMCIA card which windows supports w/o any extra drivers you can use that.
-Once you copy the drivers for a PCMCIA network card or modem, you can use that to get data on the 510.
If these have NO OS:
-This is a pain, but easy enough to get around. My first response to this situation would be to take out the hard drive in this thing and either put in my laptop and install OS through that, OR buy a 3.5" IDE connector to 2.5" laptop IDE connector. These cost around $5 plus shipping online, and allow you to connect laptop hard drives to desktop computers.
-If anyone has a big problem installing an OS on their stylistic: If there are some with and some without OS i will send you one with an OS. Also I am offering my services to install an OS for you for a couple bucks, or someone else here might volunteer to do that for you too. Most people here, I would think, wouldn't have too big a problem with this.
(If you send me your PCMCIA drivers, I could throw those on too.)

I am gonna email the webmaster about a new Forum.

I'm not trying to dissuade anyone from the group buy (remember to add shipping to the $85, and ask if stylii are included), but I have just received a number of these pen tablets from the gentleman in question, and, before I start upgrading them, I'll offer them to the group as is with a stylus and Windows 95 for $100 each, plus actual shipping (or pick up near DC). re: OS install
If the machines come with DOS only you might be able to use something called 'winlink' and a null modem cable. I used this once long ago to install W95 on a diskless laptop. Winlink has an option to install itself on the diskless computer through the com-port. It relied on the DOS CTTY command. Once installed, there is also a program which you add to autoexec.bat to automount a remote drive (as a drive letter) over the serial line. It took awhile, but the W95 install did work. The software came with a 486 Compaq Aero laptop, to give you an idea about the time frame. No clue where you would find winlink today however.

Liquid,
I've never participated in a group buy like this, so I have some questions about how this works.

How are you planning to handle DOA/30 warranty issues? Do we contact you or the seller if we experience a problem? How is that seller going to react if random people contact him about stuff he didn't sell directly to them?

How does shipping work? Will they all ship to you and you ship them individually? Or will the seller ship to us individually? If they ship to you first, are you planning to start them all up and verify against DOA? If you are doing the re-shipping and stuff, how much are you going to charge for your time, effort, & shipping charges. You are definately entitled to something, I'm curious about how much.

Thanks.

They are in pretty good shape, with some screen scuffing from being used for a year or so without screen protectors, and some rub marks on the back with a security tag USC...?(remove it and it says STOLEN in red), and Windows 95 left on from the previous user. No missing covers or case damage. The batteries I've checked are all good. Note: He said he was sending me the best ones; what he's got left that were used with ballpoint pens might not be in such good shape?

What, I'm going to have to email him again about this. I would think he would have said something about security tags and or "stolen" in red marker. thanks for the warning but our you sure it is from the same seller?
In regards to shipping and such, yes, I will check them all against DOA, no I do not believe he will ship them individually, I will have them all shipped to me and divide them up and re-ship. It would be a pain in the butt for me to calculate individual shipping rates so a flat rate would be the easiest, any extra from the flat rate I will keep for my trouble, I'm not greedy so it won't be that much. What I AM worried about is how we will handle getting the payment to me, I don't have much (if any) capital to put into this, so I will need money upfront, how you want to pay is your choice I suppose. Paypal is probably safest for you and fastest for me, since they have the whole anti-fraud thing.
Will post with more details tonight.

Sorry its a late night post, Kill Hannah concert ended later than i thought.

Here is the list so far, if your email isn't listed here please post it or email it to brianp@attbi.com. If there is a question mark next to how many you want, please post or email to confirm that that is how many you want.
How I plan to do this, as relridg suggested, is open a paypal account which you deposit to, I will also take money orders through USPS. I will email everyone my phone number as one confirmation of identity, also the ebay account I use is "geniescreations" go ahead and email the address associated with that and I will respond.
The auction page states pretty clearly that there is a 30 day warranty, and I have emailed him to ask if that covers units that are not in a suitable working condition. I will pay the seller and have them shipped to my house, where I will then check them against DOA, then re-ship them to you.
Currently, I imagine the total will be around $105 per unit, multiple orders will prob be $195 for two, and $285 for 3. THESE ARE ONLY ESTIMATES, but I imagine them real close to the end price, i am only waiting for the seller to respond to me about shipping costs. That may lower prices.
Thanks for responding real quick everybody, cause I really wanted these this cheap too.

The not-so-good news is that anything over about 24kbps is a no-go. Probably has something to do with lack o' MMX. Anybody got any tweaks?

Me and a friend made car MP3 players using 486 DX4 100 laptops and this program: MPxPlaY. It is a DOS program, and it ran 192 MP3s fine. Needless to say, it probably wouldn't work to well in a command window, you'd need to restart to DOS. Wanderer, could you do us all a favor and test this program on your Point 510?

Also, good news! I friend of the board has offered to sell us these at a lower price and will ship them directly to our homes. This will definately lower the cost since now we only have to pay for shipping once not twice. I asked him the usual regiment of questions about the units, I'm waiting for a reply. I plan on having a final price per unit by Tuesday or Wednesday and to conclude this deal by next Monday if not sooner.

Anyone that is new to the group and wants a Point 510 please email me at BrianP@attbi.com.
I want to ask here which seller do we want to buy from? There is the original seller where we would need to pay for shipping twice and the price per item is a little higher. And the new seller who will ship directly to each individual and the price is a little lower. The units from both sellers are in pretty much equal condition, come with AC adapter, few scratches, no stylus, 2.1GB HD. Also the new seller will exchange refund w/ few questions if the unit is not in a condition suitable to you.
I think the second seller is the best choice. The final cost ESTIMATE has dropped to $100 per. However, I still have not received shipping cost info from the second seller, but I imagine it will be about the same, plus the cost of me shipping out to each of you.
If anyone has any problems with this post it, if not, I will choose the cheaper of the two sellers all costs included.

This mp3 thing doesn't make sense when you think of it, I mean the terribly sluggish ePods plays mp3s reasonably well...of course it's a 200mhz processor but still, ain't no Pentium !

I knew there had to be a way... After playing with BeOS for a while -- couldn't get it to load -- I tried MPXPLAY (forDOS6x). Double-click and it opens in a dosbox fully functional with the pen and everything! It's playing at 128kbps; I'll try to find a 192 somewhere (I'm not into mp3)

OK, I found a track at 192kbps. There were some slight glitches until I realized I could turn the volume down -- then it played fine. Thanks for the prog, LiquidCyanide! (The 510 speaker is twice as good as the 1200's, but that still ain't sayin' much)

That's better! Were you using Winamp before ?
Does mplay handle playlists and plugins (server) like winamp ?

I tried 2 flavors of Winamp and 5 or 6 other players including Soritong that's supposed to work on anything. MPXPLAY has all the good stuff -- there's a screenshot at http://www.geocities.com/mpxplay/ I'll be loading up the ones I've got and selling them on eBay soon.

MPXplay works best with folders which you load, and I do believe there is a way to setup a playlist. haven't used it that extensively, it is written very well though, nice program indeed. Sorta busy tonight and tomorrow, will try to send out more info on buy, if not, look for info on wednesday.
The one board member offering them for 100 plus shipping emailed me pics of his, as I know it, he got them from one of the sellers i have lined up. IN ANY CASE: These are probably ALL from the Nabisco plant, and are all probably in close to the same shape. How much dirt is there in a food factory? They looked nice, but the back had some marks. got to run

There is a lot of dust in a food factory. Especially a Nabisco plant where they are using flour and powder-like chemicals with their product. I sell these type of food plants $20,000 bulk bag dischargers to completely eliminate dusting of their product. There will be some dust in the 1200's. Just my nickel.

Well, they look pretty darn good from the pics I've been sent. I'll find somewhere to post em online so you can see tomrw. or weds. They are pics of the ones from UCE, not the second seller. However, I sent them to the second seller to see if his were similar/had the same security tag.
I imagine they will be similar, and it is nice looking shape. Made the paypal account too, I think all details will be out Wednesday. Peace out.

After sending these pics to the seller he responded with this:

Hi,
Those look like the ones...the screens in your picture when turned on seem
to have uneven blotchiness to them. The ones I have, I haven't seen that on
them...but the security labels and everything else look the same. Some of
the marks on the plastic casings can just be rubbed off, there are some
sticker marks that come off with a damp brush. These ones have the windows
95 sticker on the front too.
Any other questions lemme know.

Sounds good to me, and he is the lower price. Final price is $100, I will email paypal info to those on the list so far...

I am also in contact with the contact of a group buy in the UK, he has ordered some from this seller and will tell me how they look.

junkleo, the pics are of the ones I have, the group buy will be similar. A ballpoint pen fits fine in the holder and works great. (use the "wrong" end)

I posted this on another thread: Well, should there be a separate board for the 510 (and the 2300, LT, etc. when they start becoming available?), or should we rename this one to "Fujitsu Pen Tablets" or similar? (Who will be the first to try an AMD133, or swap the chip from the 1200?) Anyway, for those concerned about the Chips & Tech 65548, 98SE runs it at 16 bit. I tried the portrait mode beta that C&T put out for the 65550 (before Intel) http://www.asiliant.com/driver.htm; it seems to work OK, and adds a gamma correction, but not portrait.

I got mine from wanderer above. Got it fast and it seems to be in really good shape. It has a few scuffs on the screen and case but everything is there and all the doors work and are intact. Came just as they are all being described even with the stolen tag on the back. Looks exactly like the one pictured a few messages above. Works fine, of course I have to redo everything since I don't really like win95b. I think I will try a dual boot type setup with win98se / 98lite and linux. I have some memory modules I want to try in it, I will post a new message with more information and impressions tonight.

Brian,

You've obviously been in contact with Lars (PositiveSale), any chance you could tell me how you're speaking with him? Myself and at least a couple of others were charged over three weeks ago (not part of the GP) but have received no merchandise. This, combined with bouncing emails and unreturned phone calls has me more than a little concerned.

As for contact with PS, when I call him he usually gets back to me by email within a day or two, but I must admit communication is really bad.

Wanderer is still around, and I do still have 510s, but I have them all set up with 56MB and 98SE/98Lite and I'm selling them for $250 and up ($350 for DSTN 1200s). See http://cgi.ebay.com/aw-cgi/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&item=2013781149 . The folks who were selling on uce.com have sold all 2700 from Nabisco.
