New Messagedvd decoder for $79 (modified 0 times) kenkahn

i just found a place that sells dell's rebadged margi dvd-to-go dvd decoder pc card for $79. it also has Dolby digital decoder built-in. this is good since the 1200 has a ZV slot. win9x and 2000 is supported. i figure it would help as playing mp3s. also planned to use it as my car's multimedia unit. i'll let y'all know how the installation went.

crazytown: it's http://www.teamexcess.com/ it's a framed site. so choose the "Notebooks" button and you'll see the dvd card at the last row of the table. i wouldn't recommend getting just yet. they still have about 200 left. i think they're refurbished, but it's not mentioned and i didn't care. just wait until i can get mine to work - after i can get one from randy (crossing my fingers - i came in here late to join the group buys).

i'm not familiar w/ external usb cdroms. the 1200 specs mentioned that it has 2 usb ports but from the user manual available at fujitsu's site, i don't see it in the diagrams. can anyone confirm that it's there? but any how, the way i would get windows in is by getting a 2.5" to 3.5" IDE HD adapter and put it your desktop. depending on your os, methods are different (freebsd and winblows is all i know). but for winblows, format it w/ system files and copy the installation files in it.

Take a look on eBay if you're looking for one. You can probably pick one up for about $150 +shipping, which is only a little bit more than what the group buy paid per unit. Search on "Stylistic 1200", though there are a few Stylistic 1000's (486 models) out there as well.

The USB ports are on the docking station, so unless you have that a USB CDROM probably won't do you much good (is anyone working on a HW hack for this? Would like to add a port or two on the unit itself.) I think the 3.5" to 2.5" adapter is the route that Reldrig took in getting the OS on his, but I have an old Thinkpad notebook that has an easily accessible HD bay, so I'm just going to stick the Fujitsu's HD in there to transfer the necessary files. I believe the Fujitsu's HD is a standard notebook-sized unit.

More info about that mpeg card:
http://www.billionton.com.tw/news/news-2.htm
What's great is that it sounds like it outputs Video to a TV too...and supports Macrovision
Anyone know whether you could use it as a scan converter or is the TV out only active when you output mpeg2 (or mpeg1 since they claim VCD support) ?
Wonder whether these (probably propietary) cables come with the card for $79.

This is probably a better link, sorry. It's pity posts can't be edited !

I'll send an email to an eBay seller to find out whether you can output standard video. Still got my doubts though.

Ok the ebay guy got back to me, this is what he wrote:
"It outputs the dvd code through the use of the margi player. So, I don’t think you could use it for a spreadsheet."
So it's probably just like a H+ decoder card. Don't know why they mention presentations in their marketing material then...Unless of course your presentations are burnt on a DVD or VCD !
Any thoughts ?

New Messageforget about the dvd decoder pccard - forget about it (modified 0 times) kenkahn

i'm not even sure why i bought it. didn't think about it thru. it won't help w/ mp3. finding an external dvd drive is hard and expensive. even w/ the hardware decoder, i don't think p120 is enough. no 5.1 DD sound card is available as pcmcia. i guess i got too excited. so, forget about it. so the 1200 is gonna be a powerful wireless email reader that also plays mp3 :)

yellow1: if you use the player that comes with the card, it has an option for you to set the display to go to the tv - s-video or component (rca). so i don't think it's not limited to dvd-rom, you can do the same for vcd, mpeg1 or 2. any questions, email me instead.

Sure, but er...what's your email ?
Yes, the eBay guy said it outputted through the player. I was hoping I cound maybe use to output my screen and whatever's on it (Spreadsheet, Word document, web page, picture, etc...) to a TV out.
Have you actually received it ?

I don't have a Stylistic but I look at the same DVD card for my CF-01. I wanted to play DVD movie on it... from a remote DVD rom. Would that be possible with the 1200?

yellow, sowwie for the late reply. i've been out for awhile. i got the card. came with everything you see at the link you provided earlier - http://www.margi.com/products/dvdtogo.html

just to let y'all know, i bought the card on impulse. you'll need to get an external dvd drive. one solution is get an external 5.25" ide/pcmcia enclosure for about $89 to mount a dvd/cd-rom drive. so, that could cost about $150. and, you won't like the picture quality on the DSTN screen. DSTN doesn't have high refresh rate (to turn pixels on and off?) so you'll see ghosting effect.
