Memory for the 510
Time for a new thread

Just talked to the nice folks at Memory4Less. What they are shipping for the 510 is 144 pin, same as Coast-to-Coast. Not good news, especially since the samples from what I was going to have manufactured don't work, either, just showing 16MB. Seems they'll be happy to supply whatever I want, just send 'em the specs! Any ideas?

Dang,

That's a bummer!

Anybody have a good source for Peripheral/Edge or Viking SODIMM's?

I have 32M units from both of those mfger's that work just fine.

You have a 32m sodimm in your point? If so how much memory total is reported? Also did you replace the 8m sodimm or the 16m sodimm that was already in there, assuming that you have a 32m model like most of the rest of us? It seems like you should be able to replace the 8m sodimm with a 32m and get the maximum of 56m. It may depend on which slot you put the 32m sodimm in though since the on board memory occupies some of that address space.

PeteB,

I'm running the full 56MB that the machine supports. I've got a 32MB and a 16MB SODIMM in here with the old 8MB unit sitting on the bench. It didn't appear to matter which unit was in which slot.... both variations worked.

Also, based on my experiments, two 32MB SODIMMs *will not* give you a total of 64MB when installed on this machine. It won't finish the POST process.

Michelle at Memory4Less has found some 8 X 8 32MB SODIMM that will work in the 510. $50!

She was a bit miffed that she spent so much time looking and I would't buy. Seems everybody stopped making 'em a while back, so we're looking for old stock. I'm giving my manufacturer one more shot at it, so watch this space.

Thanks that is what I expected. On Fujitsu's site it says you only get 56M but I wasn't sure it would do it with 32m and 16m modules. That is good to know, now if I can just get a reasonably priced 32m. I just got my replacement from Coast and it is wrong again. What fun.

Jsut wanted to let people know that laptopmania has the memory that Giz said worked for him on sale for $20. Of course shipping is $11.25, don't get me started on that again, but it is still cheaper than anyone else since Coast doesn't seem to have the correct part. I just ordered one so I will post when it arrives and let everyone know if it works for me. Now I just have to get some of my money back from Coast. Lets see $15 plus $12.95 shipping plus $3.50 for the first return, plus $3.50 for the second return. $34.95 - $15 that they will refund, $19.95 for not getting any working memory and it was their mistake both times.

Here is their point 510 page, the one I bought is right at the top.

Pete,

After complaining to "Crystal" at great length I was assured that they would also refund my shipping charges. I guess we'll see.....

Very keen to hear how this memory issue goes....

I have got about 100 of these units sold on the AVS Forum and I think a fair few people will want to max out the memory for what we are trying to do...

I may have some good news here!

Coast to Coast Memory believes that they have located the "proper" memory for the Point 510 (based on the specific 510 model numbers that I gave them).

They are sending me some for my review/test. Looks their price will also be in the low $20 range.

I'll certainly let you know how they work.

Did the memory from laptopmania work? If so, I'll probably order some since I can split the shipping.
Are there any part numbers on it you could share so I could do a google search?

Thanks,

Mark,

The SODIMMs that *I* got from Laptopmania work great in the 510's. They are drop-shipped from "Peripheral Enhancements Corp.", the makers of Peripheral/Edge memory modules.

Can somebody who's got working memory from laptopmania post the part number? I've seen the one "at the top" in the link above. I just want to confirm that their list/page hasn't changed.

Anyone in Phoenix area?
I have TONS of older 72 pin RAM and will test it but I do not have a 510. If someone wants to spend some time and test it with me I would sell the RAM cheap.

Got mine memory from LaptopMania while I was out of town. Put it in today and it works perfectly. The page for the 510 is at

http://www.laptopmania.com/memory/m002087.shtml

or you can find it from the memory locator, just look under Fujitsu PDA. The part I ordered and received is the first one listed on the apge above, FUJNB00032MEPOINT 32M EDO Module memory $ 20. Shipping wasn't too bad, I think it was $11.25 for me. I just wish I had tried them first.

FWIW, here's a link to an inexpensive source for a 72-pin SODIMM which "half works" in my 510:

http://www.computersurplusoutlet.com/viewproduct.asp?ProductID=MEM-SOD16F

Current price for this 16-meg module is $2.99, but occasionally they drop it to $1.99. I say that it "half works" because no matter what combo of modules & settings I tried in my 32MB unit, I could only get the tablet to recognize an 8MB improvement. So, my Point 510 is sitting at 40MB right now. Still, 1.99/2.99 is "such a deal". Shipping was a reasonable $5.00, too.

While you're at this site, look around, as they have some good prices on systems.

Unless I'm reading your post incorrectly, 40MB should be the max that you will see. There is 8MB on the motherboard, plus two 16MB plugin modules. You'll only see over 40MB if one of your modules is a 24MB or 32MB SODIMM.

Yup, 8 + 16 + 16 = 40 no matter how you add it. I've finally got some 32MB for the 510 coming next week. Should be a bit less than the cheapest we've found so far ($31.25 shipped at laptopmania? I did talk to Peripheral/Edge about buying 100 sticks -- their best price was still more than laptopmania's web price) Shoot me an email if you want to get put on the list for when it comes in. I'll sell the rest of it on eBay for $40

I ordered from laptopmania (http://www.laptopmania.com/memory/m002087.shtml) and received the memory last Friday, but it did not work on my Fujitsu 510. The 510 won't boot with this memory in the slot. They were not drop shipped form Peripheral Enhancements Corp (like someone else had mentioned), but from Universe Edge. Anyone else with the same problem?

I had a similar experience. I ordered two modules. The two I received did not look the same. One worked, the other didn't. I'm waiting for a replacement.

Reminds me of the guy who ordered 4 hubcaps from JCWhitney -- 3 were the same. For those who haven't already started trying to get it elsewhere, I do still have 32MB EDO SODIMM I had made special for the 510. $26.50 + whatever it costs to send it. Guaranteed and warranted.
