I know this is a Linux Hacker board and a Windows 98 upgrade barely warrants a post here, but our board has more neophyte users and I figured it may be helpful to document some steps and possible pitfalls of an OS install without a floppy to save you...

I have posted a step by step here http://www.avsforum.com/avs-vb/showthread.php?s=&threadid=120134

And I will post benches on Win95 / Win98SE / Win98Lite when I have time...

To the providers of this forum... Please dont think I am trying to 'steal' eyeballs or anything odd I just post were I hang out most...

I love these little unts I have not had so much 'geek fun' in years....

I'm doing some similar "dorking around" myself (I have 11 of these puppies right now). Today I upgraded one of them to 98SE, got the full-function CIC screen keyboard to work, and then ran IEradicator to "uncouple" IE from the OS.

98 appears to take about an exra 10MB or so of RAM just to load..... and the desktop is certainly slower.... but I'm still partial to 98.

BTW, for those who don't want to swap hard drives, a good way to load up Win98 install files the files using a serial null modem is to use Kermit 3.16 or higher in DOS. Boot the Stylistic from a Win98 sys'ed floppy. You can "send d:\win98 /recursive" to recursively send files.

Of course, LapLink parallel cables would go much faster, but I had a null modem cable around and was feeling cheap...

Can you do up "upgrade" of 98se over the top and not loose the handwriting recognition functionality and such?

I just upgraded my 1200 to Win98se and now the pointer jitters around. Reinstalled WinPen95 and got the same results. I assume the software is causing the problem and don't quite know the solution. There is a thread on pointer jitter but the problems they describe seem related to hardware malfunctions, not software. Is there some sort of patch or a better version of Pen for Windows?

Extended hard drive activity, such as loading a new OS and drivers, will cause overheating, especially if it's lying flat. Take the covers off, blow a fan through it, stick it in the freezer (frost free) for a while. Hard drives other than the low power Toshiba also cause problems. Pen driver is the same for W95 and up.
