Newbie looking for information

Hey all. I'm looking for a device that I can use in various places around my house. The Fujitsu devices look like they might work to serve my purpose, but I can't find much info on them. I see that I can load Win98SE on them, but how about Win2K. Also, will they work with any wireless networking (802.11b) cards? In general, how stable and easy to use are they? I'm not looking for anything that will serve heavy duties, mainly just web surfing, digital picture frame displays, home automation, etc. Any suggestions on what devices to buy would be great. Thanks!

Hi, i have a couple of the point-510s, they are readily available on e-bay for approx $150.
They do support wireless 802.11b cards but the issue is with driver support (try to get an eval card first). I can guarantee that the D-link dwl-650 802.11b card will work under linux/x-windows but can't get the win98 driver to work yet. I'll check out a few other cards if you like (cisco, orinoco)

These boxes come with win95 and will take 98 (expect a slow down though in win98) or linux/X (sweet). They will not run win2k (win2k setup does processor checking and wont install unless it sees a pentium, the 510 is a 486)

I'm using my 510 for the same reasons as you and id recomment the following.
Setup a "proper" pc doing everything you want (including running win2k and home automation software) then use the 510 with a wireless card and VNC to remote manage that box.. All the power of a new hardwired machine at your fingertips via 802.11b

Based on my testing the Orinoco Silver PCMCIA wireless cards work great under both Win95 and Win98.

I am using a silver without any problems. I also have a gold and a linksys WPC11 that I'll test if anyone is interested.

Has anyone gotten the Proxim RangeLAN-DS (www.justdeals.com) card to work? It wouldn't fit in the PC card slot. There was a small tab but it wasn't small enough to allow the card to go all the way down into the slot. I trimmed it and it fit, but after installing the drivers, it still didn't get recognized. Had some memory and IRQ conflicts, changed those and it still don't work.

Any help is appreciated. Trying to run it on Win95, downloaded new drivers from the Proxim web site.

Ray,

I would appreciate confimation that the Orinoco Gold works if you don't mind. I juat ordered one, with the assumption that if the Silver worked, then the gold should too, but you know what happens when you assume...

Thanks,
skrider

ePete:

It is entirely possible that you have damaged your proxim card. The reason it would not fit is that it is a 3.3volt only card and the point510 only supports 5volt cards. The part you cut off is a tab to STOP you from mistakenly putting a 3.3volt card in a 5volt only slot. I don't know that it will damage anything but it seems that if it didn't hurt hey probably wouldn't have invented a way to stop you from doing it. I would expect that the slot in the point510 would be ok but the card may not be, have you tried it in anything else? I have severl of the Proxim RangelanDS cards and this confused me at first also until I did some research. You need to find a 5volt card for the point510, I have both the Netgear MA401 and the Belkin FD6020 (or 6050 one is USB) and they both work fine. The Proxim cards will work in the fujitsu 1200 since it is cardbus based which is also 3.3volt.
