What have people done with their 1200's?
What projects are people attempting with their 1200's

Hi their all.

I was sitting here thinking of different uses for my Stylistic 1200 and was wondering what other people have done with thier's.

I am pretty much using mine as a wireless web tablet and just genral purpose computer.

I am thinking of making another one into a dedicated MP3 player that I stick my RF computer remote onto and some speakers.

But what are others doing and how are they doing it? I am interested in ideas to maybe spark my mind.

* It may replace my in-car I-Opener as MP3 player / GPS / "hotel room internet PC". It would be more easily detached when I want to remove it from the car.

* I sometimes carry a pen-based IBM Thinkpad 360PE (nice, but underpowered 486DX2/50) to Laplink with other PCs and program devices via parallel port. Stylistic is more suited for this purpose.

* Wireless internet web pad. 98lite w/ IE5 renders pages super quick. Still doesn't beat the ePod using terminal services though. But this is great to take with me on a vacation, to check internet from a hotel room.

Well, nothing crazy here. I just built up a GPS unit one for my friend to use when flying. The only unusual thing is that I used a low power Garmin GPS-35 LVS. I spliced the power cable to get juice from the PS/2 port so there are no extra batteries to lug around. It's a nice and small unit. Now that that is done I'm working on the full up portrait mode support. I've been trying to find a way to force a registry refresh or unload-load the pen drivers after the portrait/landscape mode has been switched with pivot. Haven't had time to work that one completely out yet. The 1200 is on the big end for a kneeboard mount, put it is do-able. The CF-01 is the perfect size for that, but the daylight vis on the 1200 seems to be a lot better in my opinion (and it's a lot cheaper).

This weekend I made my 3 1/2 little girl real happy when I used a wireless connection and netmeeting to stream a cartoon to the 1200. She walked around the house and was watching a little TV show. Audio quality wasn't the best, so I downloaded Media Encoder and am giving that a shot - we'll see if I can optimize the compression for streaming a bit.

I take a lot of digital pictures of the kids. When I took my daughter to a B-day party, I used the 1200 to offload the CF after it filled up, so I could take more pictures. Side benifit was that I got show the kids the pictures that I had taken. I think the dads liked that better than the kids did.

As a side note, my dad wanted USB on the one I got for him, so I orderd a port replicator. Before I send it out to him, I'm going to crack it open and see if I can trace the wires that go to the USB ports. I'll let ya know how it goes.

And, after some detective work, I'm getting my hands on the development software for the programmable Hot Pad on the stylistic. Should be here by the end of the week. I'll post 'em once I get 'em.

Has anybody found a off-the-shelf case for this thing? I lugged mine to Office Depot and Walmart - the closest match I could find was some CD holders.

I've told my friends and family about the 1200 - they've already told me to buy 4 more (they are paying) and configure them so they can have one.

Haven't actually done this, but I just had an idea after seeing a commercial for an Infiniti with a rear-view camera and dash-mounted monitor (which is probably an option that costs an arm & leg): it occurs to me that one could acheive the same effect by mounting a cheap webcam on or under the rear bumper, and running the connector up to the 1200. If they make infrared webcams you could mount one on the front grill too, and use it as a sensor for detecting animals/people on the road in fog or at night (I think something like this is available on some Cadillacs).

RE: case for the 1200, I've also been looking around, and besides CD cases the best I've seen so far is a small bag from Case Logic, the Courier NC 1. It's still bigger than what I want, but it's the smallest aftermarket notebook case I've seen.

I did exactly that with my I-Opener. Mounted a "free after rebate" webcam under the front bumper and ran a USB extension cable into the I-Opener. The camera refresh rate was a little slow, probably a combination of cheap webcam and maxed out CPU, but what a weird feeling to see the road ahead of you on the LCD screen.

Of course I didn't leave it there permanently, for both safety reasons and to protect the camera from the elements (and more importantly, the people in this gawdawful city...)

O.K., I just had another thought for what to do with this thing. I was sitting here watching Fresh Gear on TechTV, and the segment was on underwater digital camera housings. You get the idea.

May not be practical, but sure would be fun.

Get this -- the last segment of the show was about this kid at Scripps who had invented an underwater computer housing for a desktop computer! It looked like an oil drum, and they talked about the hard part being coming up with a waterproof mouse. I can think of a much more elegant solution for a pen PC and pen like the Stylistic. Looks like "my" idea wasn't all that impractical after all.
