1200 w/ Windows ME & Linux (modified 0 times) InSol Profile This is pretty nice. I have installed windows ME and Linux on a 20G drive... Pretty sweet. ME works like a charm... put a wavelan 802.11 in it and Schwwiiiinnnnggggg, networked lovely. Installed Mandrake 7.2, no problems there too. 802.11 came right up on that side also. Really beginning to dig this thing. I have not installed the drivers from Linuxslate yet... (http://www.linuxslate.org/software.html). Anybody else trying this stuff? I got one small problem, installed lilo (bootloader) but when the unit is not on keyboard.... no way to switch OSs. :( Tried loadlin but ME has no DOS real mode :< That doesnt work either. I'd hate to go back to 98, ME seems much snappier, plus its already working :) Anyone have any suggestions? I-Opener Technical Stuff / WinME DOS patch and a: drive This Patch makes WinMe Boot as the WinMe Emergency Floppy does, to DOS & then into the GUI. (No WinMe Spash Screen ) http://www.geocities.com/mfd4life_2000/ I don't know about UpGrades to WinMe, I Always do a Clean Install. This Has Great Instuctions. Just Make 2 Copies of the Files. BUT.... the real thing I was trying to get around is no way to select a menu choice from either lilo or the config.sys with the pen. Still have to have the keyboard on it.... *sigh* Any other ideas. If they do you MIGHT be able to use the penmouse driver that is for the stylistic 500. I haven't looked at it so I don't know if this is even possible but it might be something to try. RE:1200 w/ Windows ME & Linux (modified 0 times) Greenspark Profile PenDOS (included with PC DOS 7 and higher (and some 6.x versions, 6.3 I think) could do it if you had a menu that could react to the mouse. If you could get something like EDIT to respond to the pen, I suppose you could echo a few choices out to a file, edit that file, swipe and delete the one you don't want, then have something read that file back in to something that will boot an OS based on that. All in a batch file of some sort. Or if you can get your own menu program to respond to the mouse (and then the pen), that would be fairly effective too. Thought I saw a freeware boot manager that would react to the mouse (does Ranish make a boot mgr?). Might have been OnTrack though... Guess it depends on how badly you want it... 05-29-2001 16:14:53

It has something on it called CNFIGNAM.EXE which is a boot manager, but you also have to install PCM+ and I'm not certain if that's compatible with the 1200. 05-30-2001 05:43:23

I haven't played with the Stylistic...yet. However, for a boot manager, you might consider using Bootmagic. It has support for mice. Comes with PartitionMagic. I think it requires a FAT partition, though. Otherwise, Mandrake 8.0 comes with a graphic version of lilo. I'm sure you can find it elsewhere, too. 05-30-2001 06:00:25

I thought the same thing late Monday night... why not just use the ME MSDOS patch, have a reboot batch file that copies an autoexec.bat that boots linux (using loadlin) and then reboots the machine using a command line reboot prog; finally put a line the linux rc.local that puts the autoexec back to windows... seems like THIS oughta work... not elegant, but hey! ONLY... *sigh* loadlin gives me the finger.... "error detected Linux not loaded" Whats up with this? No details on this error anywhere.. The kernel image I am using works fine... even tried some much smaller kernels - same problem.... I just don't get it..... Tired now... just so tired.... Today was a new day. Tried a couple of loaders that recognize the mouse but they don't recognize the pen... *sigh again* Soooooooo Sorry.... no luck here either... ohhhh and BTW, The PCM+ stuff from the 500 no luck with this either.... and on a happier note Modify Post works! 05-30-2001 20:43:33

Does the pen behave on a mouse without loading drivers first (a bios emulation?) If so, there is a fantastic boot loader (freeware, source available) that is fully graphical, and supports mouse. It's called XOSL http://www.xosl.org I used to use Bootmagic or System commander, but upon finding this, I MUCH prefer it! 05-31-2001 08:09:54

I don't want to have to plug in a big keyboard and I don't want to have to boot all the way into winme to run loadlin, if it works in me. My idea is to make a little module with a microcontroller that plugs into the keyboard port and emulates a keyboard. It could have a few buttons, one to enter the keystrokes to load into windows or linux, and maybe one to just press the enter key when you see a bsod in windows. Whole toy should cost maybe 5 or 6 bucks using an atmel uC. I have a norand pen*key 6620 tablet computer, which has a bunch of buttons on the bottom including enter, ctrl, alt, all the direction keys and a few more. The one I have, the 6620, is black and white, has a real touch screen, is heavy and really durable, has a amd 100mhz processor, and no sound. I got 4 at 20 dollars a piece. There are other pen*key models that are better and I would definatly buy one, but I do love the st1200. One thing with the touch screen, if you rest your hand while you are writing, it will move the cursor (of course). Takes a little getting used to. 07-27-2001 06:00:31

Luckily I work 30 minutes from that place and was able to go over there and pick up 4 of them anyway, 2 for me and 2 for coworkers. Also wanted to let you know what I found out about these. The CPU is soldered in, bummer. I was able to take 1 of the pcmcia connectors out of 1 and now have 2 pcmcia slots in 1 of them, 1 ethernet and 1 modem card. They can handle up to 6gig HD, although I have not tried this yet. All 4 of my were monochrome and had 32meg of memory, they can only handle 48meg. On both of mine the keyboard didn't work, took them apart and found a SMT fuse that went bad, it fixed 1 of them but not the other. I can use a PS2 splitter and have mouse & keyboard working. Serial port does not seem to work. If you know of anything else let me know you can email me dan67sf@yahoo.com or reply to this thread.
