What Are "Must Have" Programs for Your 1200

What programs do you consider "must haves" on your 1200? I just got a 1200 and only have 2.1 Gigs. What should I install first?

Why not get a larger hard drive for cheap, and not worry about space? (mine has 20 gigs)

Other than that, I guess it would depend on if you had an OS on your hd. But for win95/98 you need to have pen services installed (search this site) to use the "touchscreen". Folks here have installed Linux, I have not been successful...I only have a usb external CDROM which makes life challenging.

Mine has winamp with a few plugins, three GPS mapping programs, wireless networking stuff, etc. Oh yea, and about 10 gigs of mp3s.

YouBecha:

You mentioned having a 20g in your 1200....I have a 10gb 2.5" drive that I have tried to put in my 1200 but can't get it to recognize that capacity...anything special to make this thing recognize the drive?

JHarbin,

There is an excellent Seller on eBay who touches on this in his auction ad. Here's the URL

http://cgi.ebay.com/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&category=18792&item=2074982352

And here's what he states...

Hard Disk 2.1gig You can also upgrade the hard drive (2 screws), I've heard of people putting 20gig hard drives in them, they take the 2.5 inch 12.5mm thick variety. The BIOS won't display anything higher than 2 or 4 gigs I think, but Windows95 can still use it all.

It looks like it just doesn't display your total HD available, but, it's there.

Set the first partiton to less 2 GB, it may help. I restored my working Win98 ghost image back to the 10 GB HD this weekend for trying to install XP Tablet PC version(don't ask why!) and F1200 kept complaining until I set the first partition to 2GB. You can try it too.

Hi YouBecha,

Wow, what a great link, but,I've got to admit, after reading other posts about "Do you know how to perform a 'new install?' I'm a little stymied about how to do it. I've got a 1200 with 95 installed. I've ordered a "full" 95 disk. If my 1200 should God forbid experience the Blue Screen Of Death and I have to re-- ? Start from ? Whatever, Where do I begin? Will an emergency boot disk help? Is that what it's for? I got into computers about 4 1/2 yrs ago and upon start-up I've always been prompted to "create an Emergency Start Up Disk". Well, I've done that, but, have no idea how that could help me. Is the start-up disk advantegous so that my System or Bios or whatever will recognize my A or D drive or what? From that will I be able to perform the Install?

I have to admit, I have the Win 9X full programs (or will have with the arrival of my newly purchased 95 full program w/ cert.)or upgrades..., but, if I needed to start again, I would be at a loss.

I hear stories of Bios, unrecognized peripherals, dividing the C drive into sectors, F-Disk, and on and on...

Is there a simple guide to getting my 1200 up and running again if I have the legitamate tools and how to do it?

Let me hear from all levels of those that have gone through this. How should I prpare beforehand? Let me hear your "Pearls of Wisdom". I think we all have something to learn, even if it's just a re-hash from the most simple step.

Sincerely,

Dan

I installed WinME (In most other cases (Desktop/laptop installations) I would tell people not to install WinME!). I put in a 12Gig drive. Things you need to do a clean install:

Some way to format/copy over the windows setup files (the cabs).

I opted to get the get the 2.5 to 3.5 IDE adaptor (/http://www.compgeeks.com/details.asp?invtid=HD-108) and connect the drive to my regular PC. Once you do that it is just like installing any other OS on a new system.

The Bios thing is where I had the most trouble. The 1200 only see drives to 8Gigs. Reading a few posts here, I tried first by getting the disk overly to work. No luck I couldn’t get it to work. I then Tried forcing the drive parameters in to BIOS.. No luck the 1200 would still hang. Then I read carefully that if you change the drive parameters to be forced to be a 2gig drive it should work.. And it did! :) I think the post said to match the Cyl(63) and heads(16). On boot up the system says it has only a 2gig drive installed but windows shows the whole drive.

As for installing windows, I installed windows on the 2.5" drive using my PC (up to the first reboot). During the first reboot, I powered down my PC and removed the drive. I then instilled the drive in to the Fujitsu and powered it up, continuing the install process.

Edit:
Also, I installed Photoshop on it.. Not the fastest thing, but it acts as a good drawing tablet (to bad I cant draw!)

the adapter is a good way, also if you have a laptop (that has a floppy drive) you can plug the new drive into the laptop to do all the formatting.

There are some good beginner tutorials on the web on how to install a winOS on a new machine...or you could copy a working install (ghost it) to the new hard drive...even if it is from different hardware. not 100% solution, but works in a pinch.

I have swapped drives back and forth that way. The only thing you really need it to put the pen services files somewhere on the new hard drive so you can access them when the time arises.

Hi Youbetcha,

Where are the tutorials? Links would be appreciated.

Where are the "working installs" available. Links there would also be appreciated.

Man, you have been a fountain of info looking at past posts. Please share with us.

Can I transfer the Pen Files after the re-install? Or does that somehow have to go into the install folders. Man, I'm lost. Please forgive my nievity.

I have fears of: Bios problems, unrecognized hardware, A, D problems.

I have 4.5 years of computer experience, but, am still fearful of a new install. Should I be? Am I over-fearful for no reason?

I think the tutorials YouBecha was talking about was generic and not specific to the 1200. If you never installed an OS before, it could be intimidating. The best and easy way would be to find a laptop that has a bootable cdrom drive. All you do is replace the built-in drive with your 1200’s drive. Once you have that you can boot off the windows98 CD and format the disk. I would strongly recommend buying another drive to play with. This way if you cant get the drive to work with the fujitsu, you still have a working drive.

As for the Pen/CIC files. I have them. The drivers/software was copied to my fujitsu 1200. I think I could put the Pen drivers up somewhere but the CIC files I am not too sure about. Without installing CIC, you still get the on-screen keyboard and you can write characters (will not recognize words).

Here are some tutorials:
