What CD Reader Options Can Be Used w 1200?

I would like to buy an external CD reader for the 1200. What is compatible and what is not? Mine has Windows 95SE, 80Ram. What card types are supported should I go the PCMCIA route? Does it need to have an external power source? Are USB versions ( I have the port duplicator) available? Parallel port?

What have you other users gotten as a CD reader? Has anyone gotten a reader/writer or is the 120MHz just too slow?

Haven't tried writing...in previous times I have used a 166 to write cds...

As far as reading goes, I would get one that is accessable through dos, or even bootable...that rules out USB, I have heard that some pcmcia drives will boot, or at least can be seen by dos, dont know about parallel port.

Danreller:

Archos http://www.archos.com has a bunch of different PC Card PCMCIA and USB devices. their Mini CD is recognized by windows as a standard IDE controller, so no other drivers need to be loaded.

EXP http://www.expnet.com has parallel and PCMCIA devices. their device drivers need to be loaded the first time to run.

both company's devices have different cables to use with each type of computer output. i have both parallel and PCMCIA cables for my EXP ThinCD865, but i have only the PCMCIA cable for my Arhos MiniCD

the EXP is an 8X drive and the Archos is 24X.

have fun,

I'm going to try the PCMCIA route. I'll let all know how it works out after I win one on eBay and get it.

Well, after several attempts to get PCMCIA eBay win, I finally settled on a Parallel model.

I hope the parallel route does not trade speed. My experience with ZIP drives and
external IDE harddrives is that PCMCIA is much faster than using the parallel port,
but maybe that is just a quirk of my external IDE interface (from H45).

It is a MicroSolutions Bantam 24X . It's transfer speed via the parallel port is supossed to be 1.2MBs. I think the PCMCIA are about double that, but, it will get the job done - I hope. I got to thinking after no one wrote back that some PCMCIA card CDs may not be compatible. I also thought, humm, my laptop has a PCMCIA slot, but, my two desktops don't. An external CD that is parallel may come in handy in the future albeit slow.

Just wanted to update.

I received my Microsolutions Backpack Bamtam Parallel Port CD-ROM Drive and it works great on my 1200. It's probably slower than a PCMCIA CD-ROM Drive, but, I'm happy.

Dan,

The PCMCIA connector will work with all MicroSolution Backpacks newer than the 2x, just not with DOS. It's about twice as fast as parallel. See http://www.compuplus.com/insidepage.php3?sid=98fctd81xs0mn9p&id=822

Hi Wanderer,

Do you mean by buying that connector I can convert mine into a PCMCIA unit? Do you know if the external power source will still be necessary or can the CD-Rom Driver get power through the PCMCIA link?
Thanks for the great info.

Yep, both the PCMCIA and USB adapters will work with Windows on your 24x, but you'll still need to plug in the power supply. (Unless you can get creative with a 5v battery pack, or tap off the computer somewhere.)
