Found some good technical info and files!
finally!

Funny thing happened today. All of the asking around finally paid off - today I was emailed these files from two different people who didn't know each other. Wierd timing.

The 1200 techincal ref manual at:

http://www.noetzel.net/fujit.zip

I think this one is going to help us get some USB ports. It has a lot of info, and it includes the entire pin diagrams and pin functions for every connector on the 1200. Anybody know where we can get our hands on a "CT-30002-120T-IPEX" to build our own port replicator?

This file is the developers disk to work with the programmable hot pad:

http://www.noetzel.net/dvldsk-st1200.exe

and a couple of other BIOS and setup files are at (haven't had a chance to go through all of them):

http://www.noetzel.net/p-st1200.exe

http://www.noetzel.net/stsetup-st1200.exe

Feel free to mirror these as the server I put them on has a bad habit of being off-line every once and awhile.

I've been busy repacking some 1200s to send out otherwise I'd have more to report. I think this stuff will end up being a big help.

THANKS, Great work, man.

Second link seems to be dead right now.

let me know if it's dead much longer and I'll email you the files.

After a few minutes of searching, I found out where to get the port replicator connector. The I-Pex connector is sold in the US by Global Components Corp (http://www.global-components.com/icon/connprod.html for the listing). Download the minidock series PDF and the connectors are in there. They say pricing is $.12 per 500 mated pairs. Don't think we'll need that much.

Now all we need is one of you electrical engineer / solder monkeys to figure out how we can wire up pins 41,43,45,47,49,51,53 and 55 to a dual USB block. Pins 67-78 are for the floppy.

Ok running hotpadtask (or something like that) after putting hotpad.dll in the windows/system directory "programs" the programmable hotpad key to an alt/switch type of key combination...
Not terribly useful, but the technical manual is not going to help me do anything else !

Source code is included, so it's simply a question of someone writing a daemon that will respond to the pad and send the keystroke (or whatever you want to assign) to the system.

Jim52: did anyone reply to your "soldering up the ipex conector to a couple usb ports" question. This would be interesting.

Nope! - the begging / request still stands. Is there anybody out there with the skills/time/interest?

I've got my hands on a port replicator - I bought one for my dad, but I don't want to rip it apart. I've also got the pinout diagrams, so I know which lead goes to what for the USB. But those are some mighty small connectors in there... I'm still trying to hunt down somebody who will sell a small amount of the connector pairs.

Group,
I've got the gear and the skills to tackle trying to build the port replicator / USB adapter, though I don't know about being called a "solder monkey" (I guess that's what I'll have to answer to though, since I'm a computer engineer - not an electrical engineer). Anyone get their hands on one of the connectors yet? I think I know where I can get the female USB connectors...........

I guess the USB connectors are the easy ones to find, but in case anybody's looking...

Digikey has them. http://www.digikey.com

Part No. AE1084 , for example.

I'd be inclined to get one of the brackets that are available to put two sockets in the cutout for a cardslot on a normal PC. They've got enclosed connectors, short cables attached already, and you can get them just about anywhere. If there're no other electrical components in the replicator, then these and the other connector are all you'll need. Finding the replicator connector or going inside the 1200 to bypass it will be the fun part, I think.

I've been inside the 1200 looking at this. The power leads for the USB are hot even without a replicator plugged in (I thought they might not be). One of those ISA-panel double USB connectors would be perfect, even giving you a mounting point.

I'm looking into the IPEX connector still. Not having much luck getting any cheap.

The leads inside the connector are solderable, and they follow a nice short/long/short/long/... pattern so it gives you a little leeway, but damn they're close together.

I've been thinking about this - doesn't the Stylistic 2300, which has the same form ractor as the 1200, have integrated USB ports? If so why not see if one of the Fujitsu VARs carries them as a replacement part? It might even be possible to mount them in the same place, or at least use the same mounting hardware as the 2300 (although I confess that I nave no idea where that is or what it looks like.)

Also, the same technical reference that has rhe pinouts for the port replicator also lists the manufacturer for the IPX connectors - I'll see if I can track them down. I was under the impression that this was a fairly standard part?

It's a fairly standard part, but any reseller seems to want to make you order three billion of them or none at all. OK, maybe not *that* many.

Haven't posted in a few days because I've been getting crushed at work, but here is that sad saga on getting some parts for the port replicator. I called up Global Components Corp and asked what I would have to do to get my hands on some of the IPEX connectors they sell. "Buy a hundred at $5.50 apiece". That pretty much sucks. The guy I was talking to didn't seem to offer any openings for less than the min order. From what I've been able to find, they are the only one that sells the IPEX stuff in the states. Any other ideas?

If you want, give me the contact and I'll try to run it through my company name and see if I can get some "samples" for a product we are looking into.

*wink* *wink*

I tried that sample thing, but he said since they were so expensive samples were tough to get. Wanted to know the application, company name, future purchase potential, that sort of thing.

The guy I spoke with was Tom Merten, email: Tom@global-components.com.

This is soooooooooooo annoying. There has to be some way to get our hands on these connectors.
