DVD on 2300

Has anyone had any luck with DVD on a 2300?
Maybe with a USB, or pcmcia DVD external drive?
It would be very cool to run DVDs for my bevey of children, on thos long road trips (are we there yet)!
I read something on this board about failed attempts on a 1200!

Isn't the zoomed bus suppose to be able to handle the processing overhead?

Any help would be appreciated!

I don't think the CPU has enough horsepower on its own to play DVD's because the zoomed video doesn't do anything about decoding the DVD, the decoding has to be done through the DVD player software. There used to be external DVD drives with hardware decoding built in to the PCMCIA interface card. I don't know if these are still available anywhere, because most machines now days have the power to decode DVD's with software alone.

Using an external DVD drive along with a seperate hardware DVD decoder card (i.e. Margi DVD-to-go), it might work. I've got one of these cards but no DVD drive. I am also really interested in trying this on my 2300, but have no money to spare for an experiment at this time. I eventually want a external CD drive anyway, so when I can spare some $, I will pay the price differential between an external CD drive and an external DVD dvd drive in order to find out if it works.

Thanks much Dave!
I went to Margi's web site to look at the "dvd to go"...it looks promising! I am in need of an external cd drive as well, and I'd like to get a dvd player while I'm at it. I have a parallel port CD drive.....it's only 2x speed, and is basically useless!

again thanks

Search on E-bay for the DVD-to-Go, if you are going to buy one. They are cheap and plentiful there. Be aware that there are different "dongles" (the cord attachment) for the DVD-to-Go cards. Some have S-Video and SPDIF outputs, some only have standard audio and video outputs. This is only relevant if you want to be able to play DVD's on your TV. Good luck, and let us know how it works :)

I have a 2300(160mb) with ARCHOS miniDVD and dvd's play great! also have Nogatech USB TV FM Tuner Video Capture 30 fps plays perfect...the 2300 can do the job just fine as long as its not the workhorse, The archos has it own decoder/proccessor on the pcmcia card and the nogatech thru the usb port works great(even has a 6channel scan lets you view 6 channels at the same time at 5fps each or 1 at 30fps( can be sped up to 47fps but audio lags "like watching an old Bruce Lee movie!") so the 2300 is able to do just fine.

I looked at Archo's site, it looks like the Mini-DVD doesn't actually have hardware decoding on-board. It mentions that a software decoder is included. That is interesting that it plays fine on the 2300. It lists Pentium 233 as the minimum requirements, so I guess it could be so.

It plays movies without dropped frames and unsynched audio?

Thanks for the info.

Hey crabini,

Does the Mini-DVD use both PCMCIA slots? I was wondering if I would be able to use it in conjunction with my Margi DVD-to-Go card.

Thanks,
Dave

Sorry, forgot I to mention, I use the Archos (single slot PCMCIA) with in conjunction with my Margi DVD-to-Go card PCMCIA.Audio works perfect and video is impressive on the 2300 very crisp, when I first set it up I did not think it would work as well as it did (setup is a pain, configuring Margi to recognize the Archos was the hardest part, everything else was plug and play), a friend of mine has a portable Panasonic DVD player/viewer and the 2300/dvd puts it to shame.

The Archo's Mini-DVD doesn't actually have hardware decoding on-board. It has software decoder which is included(you can use a hardware decoder with it also). It plays fine on the 2300 but the video does not like to be full screen(it drops out frames here and there, but is ok if you set it to half or 1/4 screen).

Thanks crabini, sounds like you have the exact setup I will probably use. Glad to hear you have it working well. I may be posting some questions regarding how to get the Margi card to recognize the drive when I get one. Is there a trick you can tell me now? You have to use the Margi player software to get the hardware decoding right? Or can other DVD software take advantage of the Margi card?

Thanks again,

Dave

Oh, another question: is the 2300 capable of powering the Mini-DVD through the PCMCIA card alone, or do you have to use the AC adapter?

The power to the DVD player comes with an atachment to keyboard port, the software for margi card I got from Dell user site.

Well, I just bought a brand new Archos Mini-DVD from E-bay ($99). I'll post my experience with getting it to work with the Margi card when it gets here.

I got my Archos MiniDVD yesterday, and it works great on the 2300 with a Margi DVD-to-Go card. With the Margi card, watching a DVD movie uses about 60 to 70 percent of CPU cycles, but the movie is smooth, with apparently no dropped frames, and the audio is correctly synched to the video. Without the Margi card, the movie is essentially unwatchable, lots of dropped frames and unsynched audio. I have not yet tried outputting the audio and video to my home stereo and TV.

The only problem I had setting it up was the audio didn't work at first. I reinstalled the audio driver from Fujitsu's site and then it worked. It did not work with the driver that comes with Win98. It has something to do with the IIS audio not being enabled in the driver.

Yes, you can go full screen, and it looks great.

I had a couple of lock-ups last night when I was watching a movie though. I didn't have time to check into it, but it just froze a couple of times. I had to use the reset button because it was locked up tight. I will let you know what I find when I check into it more.

I've been trying to do DVD on my 2300 for some time and wasn't having any luck. Close, but not quite.
My problem was that I had a USB DVD drive and the poor 2300 just didn't have the horse power do to USB and have enough left for the Margi.
Also I have the audio problem and will go now to fetch the audio driver. (I was running the audio out of the Margi into the audio in of my port replicator)
Now all I need is the PCMCIA adapter cable for my DVD drive. (It's a EXP drive)

Thanks for the info everyone!

Alright.
I reinstalled 98SE on my 2300 and with the Fuji audio driver, the margi works great.
And when I tried my firewire DVD burner, I could also watch movies with no problems at all.
Now, my only problem is what to get so I can do this in the car.
It seems one doesn't get a little DVD player for firewire.
What's everyone else been using to do DVDs on the 2300?
I'm thinking of trying a USB2 card for PCMCIA, with the thought that it'd be more effecient at transfering the data to the tablet.
(and getting it from somewhere I can return it :)

Well, the Archos MiniDVD works pretty well for me. Its a Cardbus interface, and is powered through the keyboard port. I got mine for less than $100 on ebay (brand new). As I mentioned in a previous post, I had some problems with it locking up one night, but the problem hasn't happened again. I think it might have been due to a scratched/dirty DVD disk.
