whats the best navigation software to use with an external gps? i have a gps that connects via serial. Are there any navigation programs for windows that says what street to turn on via a voice on the speaker? Since my external cd-rom wont be connected while in the car, does this reduce my choices of gps software?

I tried Streets & Trips 2003 with a serial receiver, and every time it repositions, the screen goes dark for quite a while. Don't know whether it's the slow serial connection or the slow processor or both. A friend tried the new Delorme and said it was slow on his 2.8Ghz workstation! The voice systems seem to require at least a PII. You can use a virtual CD-ROM like http://www.daemon-tools.com/ to get around the lack of hardware. Or you could buy a new car with GPS built into the dash...

I use MS MapPoint + AGPS (http://www.techgt.com/agps/) works just great. Audio directions, automatical reroute. Only downsides are MapPoint has really crappy maps for Canada, but still best I've got. And MapPoint again, produces a lot of disk I/O (overheat problem as a result)
