steve, i'll just repeat what i said in another thread:

i bought the margi dvd-to-go card on impulse. you'll need to get an external dvd drive. one solution is get an external 5.25" ide/pcmcia enclosure for about $89 to mount a dvd/cd-rom drive. so, that could cost about $150. and, you won't like the picture quality on the DSTN screen. DSTN doesn't have high refresh rate (to turn pixels on and off?) so you'll see ghosting effect.

so if you really want to play dvd on the 1200, look to spend about $150 for an external dvd player w/ enclosure. you can hook the dvd card to an external monitor via RCA jack, since DSTN isn't good for dvd playback. and about $75 for a margi dongle that has optical out if you want to hook up a DD 5.1 receiver.

i will put together the external dvd player and test it out. i'm sure the performance should be ok. i'll let y'all know how the movie turns out on the DSTN screen.

I would like to use the 1200 as a portable dvd player for plane trips, but this isn't the only reason I bought it. It sounds like I might be better off buying an actual portable dvd player with a screen. I guess it would depend on how bad the picture is, so please keep me posted.

Ok, DVD is not gonna work, you guys were right. I installed a software VCD player and made a VCD and it plays fine, but the video is ghosting really bad. On scenes that dont have fast moving items it looks fine, but if someone walks accross the screen it looks like hell! Oh, well, it will be good enough for my 2 year old to watch Barney on our plane trip.

heh, good idea Steve...not sure why i didn't think about downloading a porn mpg file and play it...there're some fast action it in i'm sure :) but nah, a movie trailer would be easier to find.

sorry for not getting back. i'm still trying to find a good deal on a pcmcia controller/enclosure combo but haven't.

having a TFT screen would be so great...that's why i'm waiting for the report on the norand 6632. hope it can be had for $200-250.

thanks,
-ken
