Will I be wasting my time?

The thread I posted recently describes my difficulties getting the pen working in Windows 98 on an ST2300. The problem appears to be in Pen Services or the pen driver, leading to a consistent "fatal exception 0E ... at 015F:BFF89742..." after handwriting a couple of dozen characters or so.

It appears that, given the lack of support from Fujitsu for these older pen tablets, I will not be able to get this software to function properly.

Once I got the Windows configuration working I intended to install Linux. This will be my first attempt to work with that OS, so I expect to spend a lot of time learning and tinkering. However...

Will I be wasting my time on this hardware? Will I reach the same sort of impasse, with something that doesn't work and no fix available?

Those of you who have put Linux on your ST500, 1000, 1200, 2300, LT, Point, etc... Were you completely successful? Do you have reliable pen-based mouse emulation, software keyboard, and handwriting recognition?

Or should I just save myself the frustration and dump this thing?

I had the same problem you have. After writing only a few characters, I would get a "fatal exception" error.
I formatted and re-installed windows on my stylistic 1200 and the pen works fine, including the handwriting recognition, and I haven't had any problems with it.

I noticed that you'll be using linux, so you may get different results. Just wanted to share my experience.
Hope this helps

Thanks for the reply, Bergen.

What version of Windows are you running?

It's somewhat comforting to hear the same thing reported on a 1200 that I'm getting on my 2300. At least it means it's likelier a "Windows thing" than hardware related.

I noticed that you'll be using linux, so you may get different results.

I hope not. The only impact Linux could have had on the Windows installation at that time was the "leftover" gigabyte that wasn't set up as a Windows partition. Since then I've completed a base install of Debian and configured lilo to auto-boot Windows with Linux available if I've got the keyboard hooked up. There have been no changes, good or bad, in the behavior of Windows.

That still leaves the unanswered question (shared by homebray with his Stylus LT) of who has gotten complete pen functions and handwriting recognition working under Linux?

Thank you,

Mike D.

I am using window98SE on my Stylistic 1200. Anything newer may be a little too much for that processor, and I already have the memory maxed at 80Mb.

It sure is nice to once again be able to use the handwriting recognition.
